1. Thanks Paul. That record was done with Jon Withnall at Parr St studios, and was a great laugh. The producer was ace, the engineer was ace, and the band leader is/was my best mate!!! All the kit and bass was done together in a very large, beautiful, wooden room... I could wax lyrical about how it was easily in the top three sessions I have done (and I've had some real fun sessions!!!) Dan
2. Hey Ped, I usually go for 'fliptop' or 'motor city', and just phaff. I'd love some DHA stuff for bite and compression, but for now I'll just play with the knobs 'til it sounds somewhere near good. When playing live, I rarely use the POD (although that'll change for my new project) as the DS-P sounds the bizzle what ever I'm using!!! Toasted: Yeah!! Wow!! Dan
3. My DarkStar'd Precision in the Bass Porn forum. Everything I could ever want!!!! It's odd too, that it's not that expensive either, but I suppose that's all part of the thrill of it!!! Dan
4. You can hear the bass at www.myspace.com/frameworkmusic and check out 'Hot Legs'. I may give recording some samples a go later today but my strings are very 'one-trick pony' at the mo (dead rounds). To me, this is the vintage precision sound. It honestly makes no sense to me having a precision without a darkstar!!!! Dan
5. Well guys, this baby's been in action for nearly a year but I never felt I had pics that did her justice. I had a session in Rockfield Studios, Wales, and the MD hired a photographer. She took these: And here's one of my early attempts: The parts bass was bought on the old Bassworld, but I've added the ashtray, DarkStar and the absolutely Pimpin Paisley pickguard. This is always how I imagined I'd sound. Many times I have nearly bought a bass, only to spend an hour at a good volume with my trusty old Bass POD and kept my money!!! Its great when an instrument gets you work, too!!! Dan
6.
How much for an eighth?
Green or brown? I couldn't resist!!!! Dan
7. Pix please!!! Where d'ya get the model one? Any routing needed? Dan
8. I do a lot of prep work for my students including sustained chords to practise scales over, drum grooves at various tempos in various styles and chord progressions. Its great for those who don't have access to logic or cubase. I would do it if there were resources I could use too, though. And I'd like to know how people were using them and if it helped. Dan
9. My brother was a drummer so I'd always rob his kit. One day I got asked to find a drummer for my mate's band but couldn't be bothered so I suggested myself (having never really played in a band properly). Very quickly I was practising regularly in my room to get good enough to go where the band wanted to. That band ended up being the most successful band I have been in, with decent promo vids on TV and good tours. I joined for a laugh, but took it seriously when I was in there. I'm an ego-maniac, so I don't mind saying I can wipe the floor with most drummers I know (most are rubbish). I use decent technique and put a heavy emphasis on good, simple playing and don't play too loud; infact, I'm tracking all the drums for my new band (as well as horns, bass, guitar and synth) so I can hand decent demos out to other players. As far as I'm concerned, every bass player needs an understanding of the rhythm section as a whole (kit, piano, guitar) to be able to contextualise their own playing. Dan
10. You could always spend a while with Sibelius, converting the notation to notation & tablature. Do this with a bass on your lap and you'll gradually be learning through it too!! I teach all my students with notation and tab as although reading is a VERY important skill to have, sometimes you can focus elsewhere and still learn a lot; tackling notation when you make the conscious decision too rather than having to to learn a line. Dan
11. I played one in Liverpool not long ago at the Dolphin shop. The set up was god-awful (which surprised me as they're usually pretty good), but they tweaked it there and then and I was pleasantly surprised (Also tempted to throw a DarkStar in there too!!!!) DaN
12. Hey Mike. C Mixolydian is a major scale with a flat 7: C D E F G A Bb C. [There's an interval of a diminished 5th (same number of semitones) between your third (E) and your b7 (Bb) if that's what you mean, but no F#] Dan
13. As your man Mr Llloyd says, hitting those killer notes that spell out a mode can make you sound just 'right'. Over a Cmj7#11 chord, play in the lydian mode and 'spell out' that #4 to 5. All of a sudden, you're playing the chord and not just the triad. I'm sure there's a list of chords relating to modes, if not I'll knock one up. Dan
14. Bass shaker? Internally mounted mic? I'm hungover.
15. I've frequently found when I have an attack of GAS, its not me wanting a new bass, but me wanting something new musically. If you're suffering, hire a room, invite a few friends over and have a jam. Creating something new is always more preferable to just spending more money. Dan
16. I think Rich is referring to low pass filters, LFOs and arpeggiattors. The Jen won't do arps but it will do some absolutely AMAZING bass sounds with the Pulse Width Modulation. If only I hadn't just bought another synth, I'd defo have that Jen. Its an amazing synth!!! Dan
17. Man I'm devo'd!! I've got friends at Dolphin and I was hoping to get a good deal. Are they re-stocking? Do you know? DaN
18. DARKSTAR!!!!!!!! Oh man. Every time!!!! DaN
19. A sheet of perspex or similar and your local luthier is always a good idea (I planned a similar job to you but went with pimpin paisley from WD, however I still used my local luthier to cut and bevel the edges). He can trace your old guard and add any mods you need. DaN
20. Your 'battle scars' on your bass. That must be a comforting feeling. I let my basses get bashed to hell, it makes them feel like 'mine'. Dan
21. As Billy Dangledagger once said: "Beware the green eyed monster." I shall heed that advice, as said monster is currently stood over my shoulder whispering "You'd look better than anyone else with one of those round your neck." He obviously hasn't seen my bank statements!! Great purchase!! DaN
22. Great Alto Sax. Hanson SA5, widely regarded as one of the best intermediate saxes on the market. RRP £899 Want £400 o.n.o Dan
