1. Out of phase J bass pick ups can get a instant scoop slap sound and then drop to one for other songs, both on together and you have an almost instant scooper slapper...
2. The worst thing is when someone books a band in the genre they like. You turn up to 200 people expecting band of Gold and one hour of cheeeeeeeeeese music and lead balloon.
3. Someone I know who went, put it rather bluntly, if she was a Kate Bush Tribute, she would get paid off, her voice left her a long time ago. He said it was the empresses new clothes, thousand clapping away kidding themselves, all thinking inside, its a bit poo really but if I admit it everyone will laugh. Luckily he did not pay for the ticket, but wishes he took the £1500 on offer outside for it from the touts.
4. When I get £6000 a week wages like charity executives I'll think about it and that is very bottom end in the salary brackets. Personally when you are in a band you get sick to death of been chugged. Musicians need to eat and pay rent as well.
5. The Guy that ran our system was a HNC technician, he had a constructed earth breaker box, what I know is he would not touch a long run himself without a remote earth point he could measure. As to if this ran a secondary fail safe point or not I do not know, as a HNC, you don't question them, you just lift the boxes and mix the sound. I still have the distribution board somewhere he constructed, might see how it worked.
6. £800 for an S8 fender and it is still here ? Wow, just wow. That S8 serial is God !
7. When I ran a touring PA company, outside gigs had a rule, if the power run was more than 30 m we drove an earth spike in to the ground stage-side and RCD on to that from our board . Electric will take the easy route and down a 50m extension, round the ring main to the sink with a 20 year old earth tag is under the pub sink far less likely that through you and the stage. On sound, height is God, the higher the stack the better the sound, hence why 99% of big outdoors rigs are Martin array flown, if you can see it, you can hear it.
8. It's got the coveted sought after holy grail S8 serial , totally on the sweet spot for 70's precisions. Wont be for sale long. You see an S8, you get it bought !
9. If you can pick it up with one hand, it's fake. The real ones from this era tip the scales around 11 pound. That aside, they are the highest epitaph of Precision sustain growl in this format, especially the heavy ones . Once you play a genuine lead lined (feels like it ) 76-79 precision, the others feel like fakes.
10. They change a few bits round with From the jam, beat surrender is chopped neater as well.
11. Ends of Low F# then trills B with C# hammered on For Tommorow F# dling dling dling B C# trilly bit. On the record it does , on this he looks to just slide up E to F#
12. Riverboat song. Halfway through, you realise just how long left there is of this repetition of dross.
13. To answer a few questions : Punk ended when greedy music corporations decided to shut it down. Independent labels and pressing factories and independent shops were pulling the rug from the "You will buy what we say " music industry. They set out and signed any bands they thought they could commercialise and bought the indie labels and shut them down. People went back to buying what they say. Just about every new genre has had the same treatment, Madchester indie, the naughties flux "artic monkeys style bands" that were doing that stuff long before them. All shut down and run out of town. I did hope the internet and file sharing would re-introduce guitar bands, but somewhere it has fallen at a hurdle.
14. The Crooks up here have locksmiths tools to open vans , the insurance won't pay as there is no sign of forced entry. Opening the drivers door turns most alarms off as well. Some venues will advise you leave gear in their lock up and pick up next morning rather than load the van and get followed to the digs. One band from east Germany were totally cleaned out first gig of the tour in Leeds, even with someone asleep in the front of the van
15. The T word is first Transport, costing, parking, gear safety and security. Get the wrong and the Tour comes to an immediate end. Gangs follow vans from venues of non local bands , it's a sure hit they will be parking up at some digs. They never have any reservations about unloading the van late at night...
16. You do have to be wary of disrespecting people who have actually come for the job to do the job. Letting them walk out with the we will call you line is not the best. They will be going round themselves, you have to know you have the right person before you and be ready with what to do when they walk in.
17. To be honest, remember the people you are auditioning are looking for a band as well. Be prepared to stop if someone hits all buttons as they will also be of most interest to the next band. Once they have a job, you lose them. Don't mess about 9/10 will be time wasters who can not do the job. When the "man" walks in, have the respect and offer ready on the table there and then. Thinking someone even better might be along loses you the chance to have a great player in your band.
18. Basically, village idiots buy houses next to pubs, these houses are cheaper than houses out in the quiet country. Then they start acting like lord of the manor and demanding the pub keeps it quiet. Then we have the council, who have had over 4000 acts passed to give them "power" as emptying bins and sweeping streets was defaming and they all really wanted some power and authority. This combines with people that seek such positions of power usually have a hatred of British culture in general and want to stamp it out, particularly the local pub and people enjoying themselves drinking beer. So they seek out and yes I say seek out, I have seen them door knocking around pubs with clipboards hoping one of the tw$ts in the first sentence gets involved and then they can jobsworth it at the pub. What should happen in a common sense world is they should be told, you bought a house next to a pub and music venue you retard ! Just My opinion of course
19. The Problem with Mackie is they had a well made reliable product with good drivers, then like all companies decided to make them in the far east and boom, kaput.
20. If the PA has bass through it then consider putting the bass amp side stage to point across stage . On big set up's they will often have a fake amp wall and the bands real amps are on the side of the stage on a crate so it is cutting across stage mic'ed up and to the side of heads. Firing it out front of house is little use if the PA has bass through, try it side on, wont look as good but everyone will hear it. Unless we are talking 15K plus rig the monitor set up might not be good enough for bass to be put through. Years ago I owned a large Touring rig and we did some very big acts, onevery famous 12 bar rock blues band had fake Marshall amp wall''s and a fender combo and vox ac 30 side of stage did the real work, rest went through monitors. The fake amp wall was brilliant, all folded flat on to one pallet, looked real and lit up with fake cables and the lot, even the amp heads were just fake fronts .
21. By defenition Sub Means Sub Sonic, in that you can not hear it, but can feel it, a normal band does not produce that many sub frequencies and without a bass bin, you will have very little bottom thud. Logic make some nice powered bass bins that can knock out some thud. The Sub word has become a bit of a trend, they never were intended to be used as bins, more of something to stick under a bin for a bit of low rumble. See loads of bands with Sub bins and tops and very poor kick drum and bass guitar sounds. Unless it's dub step dance, go for a bass bin set up.
22. For a band, think bass bin, subs are too low, you need thump and punch, Subs are for Discos Any bin thats 2x15 will thump that bass and kick drum out.
23. Rodger was late, he had to Hoover up first.
24. I brought a Rickenbacker down from the loft that had been there years, yep, stillbang in tune.
25. It was actually started by a Chicken. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A43JOxLa5MM&feature=kp
