1. Mrs2611 and I quite like their dulcet tones...never heard them before
2. Another one for me is Stuart Morrow of New Model Army any of the early stuff is awesome
3. I guess if I knew then what I know now I would have liked to be a few few years older when Punk first exploded but being that bit too young I got to experience the second wave of punk bands, the start of goth and new romantics, so all in all I am happy with my lot
4. The 60's Epiphone guitars seem to be commanding large prices these days I assume that the basses are effectively Gibson basses like their guitar counterparts so it may not be a bad price for it
5. From my understanding impedance is how hot the ouput of your pickup is going to be, the higher the impedance the higher the output will be which will translate into driving the front of you amp harder and earlier into distortion (great for a lead guitar not so sure for a lot of bass work) you don't really have to worry about matching impedance but if you had a bass with twin pickups and had 1 high impedance pickup and 1 low impedance pickup you would potentially have a noticable volume drop when switching between pickups. I think I am right on the above but if not I am sure someone will point us in the right direction
6. Gretsch = lust and divorce, especially if I ever come home with a White Falcon, Mrs2611 knows how much they cost!
7. I am afraid I only use standard tuning, my head can't handle anything complicated! However our guitarist swears by having multiple guitars (3 usually) all tuned at the start of the night to the key of the song he needs it for, he is a firm believer that a guitar needs to settle into a tuning change and from what I see at rehearsals where he will only use one guitar and retune as needed I think the multi guitar policy for gigs is the right way to go I hope that helps
8. I wipe the strings after every gig, I also really hate grubby finger marks all over a pristine bass so it will get a thorough wipe down after every gig
9. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ATC-CO-AXIAL-SPEAKERS-12-4-OF-JBL-EV-RCF-/161024968275?pt=UK_ConElec_SpeakersPASystems_RL&hash=item257dd60653 Very naughty, these speakers are out of the Martin Audio CX2 range and, as the seller knows full well by now, the HF diaphragms went out of production some years back and replacement diaphragms are quite simply not available anywhere in the world. I may be doing him a dis-service as he does have 100% feedback, I have emailed him and asked him to add to the listing where you can buy the diaphragms from...I will wait to see if he adds anything I had to have separate horn boxes built to get round the same problem with some CX2 I brought after the guarantee from the buyer that the diaphragms were easily available. They are fantastic speakers but I wouldn't give more than £50 for the lot of them as they stand
10. I spent £20 on a "guarenteed for life" American cable some 15 years ago, can't remember any details about it or even where I brought it so couldn't claim anything if it did fail but to be fair 15 years on and it still works perfectly I think I got my monies worth out of it and it did exactly what it said on the tin
11. I guess that if it is good enough for my hero's it's probably going to be good enough for me,
12. I've had a look at this bass but I was dubious about it needing a set up when it appears to be for sale from a music shop, surely a shop would get it set up properly in order to maximise it's sale potential. I put it on watch last time but haven't bothered with the re-list this time
13. Off to see Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark tomorrow night in Bristol, got to be one of my favourite bands of the eighties and Andy McCLuskey with that lovely old Sonic Blue Jazz Bass, never got to see them before so really looking forward to it
14.
I took a break between 2000 - 2004 and I've come back to playing with more enthusiasm ever since. I guess it depends on how much of a distraction all 4 bands are. I felt I needed a total break but many just scale it back. I was struggling with three bands a while ago but cut it back to one as I just wanted a breather but to still perform. Ultimately only you know yourself
I was gigging 3 nights a week every week for 6 years (luckily just the one band) but I got to the point where I hated it, it had destroyed at least one relationship and I hadn't seen friends in years....so one day I quit and walked away, I sold my bass (seriously regret that move) and didn't pick up a bass again for 6 whole years and, to be honest, I didn't miss it for one second, during the intervening years I set myself up a mini studio and wrote dance music...just for the hell of it! anyway about 4 years back I finally felt ready to go back to playing live again only with strict controls over how much I was doing, I now play in 3 bands but still limit the yearly gigs to no more than 30...I am enjoying it more than ever and playing better than ever. Bite the bullet and take a break if you feel it's right for you....you can always come back whenever you are ready
15. I like the idea of what you are looking for and hopefully it will help you attract musicians with a more professional outlook, I really think your first step is to find musicians who want to play the same kind of stuff you want to play, build up a core of a band with them, then you can start to dictate what you expect from the other musicians, most players are going to look for a band that is going to be fun to play in rather than something you make sound a chore. IMO a covers band needs to be an equal partnership between all it's members, from the tone of your original post it sounds like you would want to rule the band with an iron rod what worries me is that this approach would be more likely to attract just the type of egos or motivationless players you would want to avoid.
16. You will always be your own worst critic, I bet if you had asked the resident drunk at the end of the night he would have judged just short of the bestest band he'd ever seen! Audiences tend to hear the original song in their heads (if you are doing covers obviously) so most of the time don't notice what you will feel are glaring mistakes
17. An old Mackie CR1602, it will give you plenty of chanels and 6 aux sends so in theory can run 6 monitor mixes but that would be at the expense of all your effects sends, they are cheap (nowdays) reliable and compact, I have had mine for years and wouldn't part with it as I have never found anything as flexible
18. I learnt on an unlined fretless, firstly and foremost play by ear rather than looking at where you think your fingers should be, as you get confident you should be able to play it exactly the same as a fretted bass or using short slides you will get that lovely fretless sound....then most importantly buy a chorus pedal an octaver and get hold of Paul Young's No Parlez album and listen to Pino at his best and ignore those ney sayers on here they are out for mischief!
19. Currently 3, 1 gigs regularly, 1 gigs 4 or 5 times a year and the other is a writing and recording set up at the moment, it's manageable but rehearsal time gets challenging when you get a weekend of Saturday morning practice, sat evening gig with the other band and sunday afternoon practice with the writing project.
20. Welcome to a fellow Northamptonian....once the biggest town in Europe not to be a city...now just....yawn I guess! Epi Thunderbird bass, a cool tool to learn on...good luck and if you need any help give me a shout
21. Finally got my 5 string back today...brought it because it had SGC electrics and guess what didn't work properly...yes the bloody electrics....anyway 2 months after taking the plunge I have finally got it back, all working, without the distortion that was plaguing the thing...first impressions...I am not sure about 18V actives....it just seems the slightest adjustment has a massive tonal effect...it's like I am scared to touch anything as the changes are that extreme...does that sound right for 18v electrics? The B string feels so loose, it feels wrong as if the bass isn't built to feel like that, I guess thats what it should feel like, but to me I want to tune the whole guitar to a high B which no doubt defeats the object of a five string! can a 5 string be built, scale wise, to be a high 5 bass rather than low? My friend in the shop that sorted the electrics tells me it serves me right for entering the dark side and messing with more than 4 strings is he right...am I dancing with the devil in the pale moonlight armed only with a flappy b string and dodgy electrics? If I turn my back on it is it likely to go for me??? Scared now, advice needed! Rog
22. Ooh ooh is it.....no it couldn't possibly be ....could it....but wait....ooh I am right excited now...please don't keep me in suspenders the good lady will only twang the elastic
23. I think audiences will hear missing parts of songs in their heads just because they remember the original version, we toyed with Madness Baggy Trousers for a while, we have no brass section, the guitarist played all the brass parts, after one gig a punter came up and acused us of playing to a backing track because he had heard the brass parts when we clearly didn't have a brass section...he totally refused to believe that the guitar played the right notes so he just heard it as the original brass parts. And konw he wasn;t completely pished!
24. I use Fast Fret before and after every gig, works a treat
25. Just spotted it on Ebay and it's local to me....now where did I put those winning lottery numbers!
