1. Would owning a Paisley Fender of any kind be the ultimate Chav weapon of choice?
2. Could you nip into the pub on during the week and see what the clientelle is like then? Could you speak to any other band that has played their recently and get their view on the crowd? You may be worrying needlessly but I wouldn't want to be playing any venue with a threatening reputation, we do this for the love of music not to feel intimidated and stressed
3. I have to say this whole thing really confuses me, has Mr Hall taken Tokai etc to task over these blatent copies / tribute instruments? if not why not? it seems very petty to be chasing an end user who may well be selling said instrument to get the cash to buy the real thing! I have owned a Rockinbetter and thought it was a pretty good bass (as with all Tokai's I have owned) I am now in a position where I could buy the real thing and I expect it would be a cracking bass but given Mr Hall's aggresive approach on these copies I haven't and probably never will buy one. I still own a Tokai 335 copy which is so good it actually inspired me to buy the genuine Gibson version, it was a fantastic guitar, it was a lot better than the Tokai but I couldn't get on with the nitro finish on the neck so we parted company but it is a clear example that sometimes owning a decent copy will lead on to buying the real thing
4. Yeah they were all Japanese made, if it goes for the £350 mark I think it is good value but the buy it now price is a little hopeful
5. I reckon it is a little overpriced in the market place but for anyone who's never played one of these I think they are fantastic, I have been playing mine again over the last few days and really had forgotten just how good it sounds and how well it plays. I am not linked to the item for sale in any way! 6. I tend to use the Stingray for gigs, the Status for recording then swap between the others as back up or practice, I guess it keeps the strings fresher on the two main basses for a bit longer
7. Joe Strummer, Jake Burns, John Peel, without these I wouldn't be a musician
8. Elliot....the great uneducated will think it is after TS Elliot but we will all know the real truth
9. My dad brought him to Northampton to play at Spinney Hill Hall when I was a kid, I didn't really appreciate what a top musician he was at the time, my dad would have been saddened by the loss of another jazz great
10. Your problem may well be where your sound is forming, a larger bass speaker is designed to project the sound hence why your audience will tell you it sounds great but you are not hearing it that way, I suffered the same problem in the past....solved it, had a fantastic sound everywhere I played, sold what solved the problem and dispite owning quality gear again now I still find the same issues are back...what solved the problem...a Mesa Boogie 1516 cab with a mix of small speakers (forming the sound closer to you) and bigger speakers projecting the sound to the audience and the other big advantage was the cab stood tall so the speakers were throwing the sound at my body rather than my kneecaps. I have improved things with my current set up by putting the 1x10 below the main cab which helps throw the sound at me rather than my legs and still keeps the sound anchored to the floor and I certainly feel it improves things. I hope this helps a little
11.
Well, yes. Everything I've ever written was a hit, but the f***wit publishers / record companies / performing artists / record buyers couldn't get their tiny heads around songs about abbatoirs, pelican crossings and chutney.
+1 to that but for me it was moshing on a zebra crossing how can that not have been a hit?
12. Ali McMordie of Stiff Little Fingers, some really clever bass lines and the fact no bass tab is available online, to me, is usually the sign of some difficult lines to work out. I have seen SLF many times over the years and despite having had the legendary Bruce Foxton on bass for many years to me they are now better than ever with Ali back in the hotseat
13. Played a local WMC last night, decent crowd, loads of room on stage and the nicest landlord in the world (quite possibly) and with free sandwiches at the end of the night this has to go in the good gig guide surely? Only played one bum note during the set, but one to many me thinks
14. Plunge taken! Just brought a Godlyke Desciple 5 via evilbay will collect it this week and let you know how I get on, thanks for all the advice
15. Me at a festival last year, but you'll be glad to know I have seen the light and returned to a sensible amount of strings!

17. Yes that kind of thing would suit you ok, The Box stuff is also surprisingly sturdy given its cost, we used the speakers for monitors and FOH for 3 years and still have never had a speaker fail, we still have the amp head as a back up. Radio mike wise be a little wary, a lot of cheaper ones (the likes of Pro-Sound from Maplins) have a built in noise gate (if the mike is not picking up a loud enough signal it will close the gate and shut off the background noise) the only problem is that is is very slow opening back up so effectively you lose the first words of a sentence. It's not too much of a problem for a DJ or a singer but can be a real issue with the spoken word (conferences, sermons etc)
18. Difficult one! what kind of clout does the agent have? Can he get you gigs that you simply would not be able to get on your own? The agent probably won't be around as long as the venue and venues will talk to one and other so if you blow one venue off to massage the ego of this agent you could find that somewhere down the line the agent has gone and the venues don't want to book you because of your stance on this one. I would have to agree with the other posts on this one unless this agent has a track record of delivering spectacular results
19.
Not sure why we're owning up to our ages, but what the hell, I'm 52.
I guess I asked about the age thing because as we get older life pulls from different directions, kids grow up, abillity to practice increases because you are not going to keep waking them up but, work stresses and pressures increase so on the other side life offers less time / desire to practice. Older still and I assume (I will tell you when / if I get there) the work pressures decrease but health becomes more of an issue / influence on our abillity to practice I played a lot more when I was younger but feel that practice time now is far more productive than ever before, I sat down last night and put some compilations on, nothing complex just some songs I like but have never wanted to or been bothered to learn to play, I picked up the acoustic bass and the result was by the end of each song I could play it and understood what the bass was doing
20. Really the only thing that matters to me is that we can do the song justice and the song will do us justice either one doesn't happen and I will have an issue with doing the song
21. Just wanted to do a straw poll (whatever that actually means) I am in my 40's and still practice around 10 hours a week, where do I fit in with the rest of you?
22.
Can't beat a proper 90's bass collection
Thanks I tend to agree, I do like the Bass Collections but I did find the 4 string necks a touch narrow, when playing quickly I found I would kick the G string off the side of the fretboard on occasions so I am a little concened the 5 string may give me the same problems
23. Hi guys and gals, I am thinking of stepping over to the darkside and trying a 5 string bass again (had a squier hm? thing years back and hated it) I am thinking about something Bass Collection/ Yamaha TRB ish. I don't want to spend too much as to be honest I don't want to open pandora's box and end up wanting to trade off half of my 4 string stuff, I am looking at the idea of it being an addition to my current gear, something that will record ok and isn't too heavy (key buying point) Looking on evil bay at the moment there is a used Samick Fairline at £249 and a used Bass Collection at £330 ish, any recommendations would be greatly received Thanks
