1. Right.....time for spot the technophobe !! I don't understand, full stop, how do these things work, what are they trying to achieve, is the idea that I plug my bass into a laptop, output the laptop into a power amp and then on to a "lightweight" Ampeg 8x10 cab if that the idea doesn't the weight of the 8x10 cab somewhat outweigh (if you'll pardon the pun) the saving of not carrying the genuine head to the gig? Is this just a recording tool, in which case I can understand its usage? Spare a dime for the technophobe guv!!
2. I have trashed my back over the years with heavy guitars / basses, PA systems and stupidly large (but fantastic sounding) amps, unfortunately I really am paying for it now and may well be facing surgery in a few years time and if not probably a lifetime of pain killers. Sadly even middle weight stuff (9 to 10 lbs) is taking its toll nowdays so if anyone has a balsawood bass with a killer tone I need to know about it I am about to have a total clearout, most of what I have got is now too heavy for me to gig with, like another member said, my Precision Lyte is my gigging bass now, weight is everything when looking for a new bass nowdays sadly
3. I already do a tiny bit of backing vocals on a couple of songs (real complex stuff like the chorus for Teenage Kicks and If You Wanna) I really would like to do some more but I am really struggling to sing, maintain timing and remembering to breathe especially when playing fingers stylie, any tips out there for how best to try and develop my massive singing talents Our set requires a mix of pick and finger styles Most of the basslines are practiced to the point where I don't get them wrong, I know the words I need to be singing but put them together and it quickly becomes a train wreck. Come on all you multi taskers out there what's the secret?
4.
Basschat headstock decals. These would be a nice addition to some of the home builds. We could ask Mark the master bodger for his input.
There are a few sellers on Evilbay that could produce a decent Basschat headstock decal
5. I would go with the bulk of the other posts and live with it and look at it as your first step towards a genuine relic. If you really want to get it repaired have a word with the likes of Revive or Chips Away or Dent Wizard they are all automotive smart repairers and they can achieve some fantastic results depending on the colours they are working with
6. I don't think it is possible to "find your sound" ocassionally you will set up somewhere plug in and think wow that is the sound I have been hunting for since year dot, now move you amp to another room / venue and the same amp / bass will sound a million miles from what you loved in the other room. My favoured set up at the moment is my Little Mark head, Mark Bass 2x10 and, what surprises me most here, my Precision Lyte, that seems to be the closest I have come to my perfect tone, but that tone is only perfect at about 25% of the places I use it, and still then only perfect to me where I am standing. I guess what I am trying to say is that it is probably impossible to achieve your perfect tone everytime but if you can find one you are happy with you perhaps have to trust that most of that sound will still be present at times where you don't feel it is sounding as good
7. No regrets, a few bad decisions possibly but then again if I had made what I think in hindsight was the right decision who knows where that road would have ended up.
8. Some interesting comments and some pictures I wish I also could "unsee"! some comments relate to the sound and feel of the bass compared to the guitar which is not really what I was getting at, soundwise the bass can certainly be a lot sexier but, to me, that confuses the issue more, I think a Les Paul Guitar looks way better than it's bass equivilent, a 335 looks better than an EB2? but not such a clear cut example, the SG certainly looks less gorky than an EB3 and quite frankly the Gretsch Falcon bass leaves me totally cold, I have deliberately avoided the Fender range because that, to me, is a tougher call and I suppose one for the bass guitar would be the Musicman range where the guitars just seem to look like tiny toys compared to their bigger (better looking) brothers
9. I am a Bass Player and I have a problem, I've tried the whole Guitarist / Keyboard thing and it is not me, I found myself needing some decent reading matter for the little boy's room and dug out my Gretsch catalogues and an old Gibson book....I find myself lusting after an old Les Paul, I so want an old 335 I need an early 60's SG Junior and I would marry a White Falcon if I could find someone the facilitate the act! The thing is I don't lust after basses in the same way, yes an early 60's Jazz or Precision is a thing of beauty a Wal is a stunning looking bit of kit and there are many more fantastic looking basses out there but I just don't think they create the same desire that these iconic guitars bring out Am I still a guitarist in denial or is there something more beautiful about a six string that makes the bass look like its cute but quirky looking cousin?
10. Sorry if it sounds harsh, it's not meant that way, but from the way I read the OP you want your ego massaging as well as the other band members, you are realising the truth of being a bass player....we all know they run the van (because bass players are the only ones reliable enough to handle such responsibillity and that can find a venue and arrive on time) As a bass player you already realise that in the great scheme of things you are nothing more than halfway between a drummer and a musician and are by rights going to be taken for granted by the rest of the band. Your post makes me think of a lead guitarist trapped in a bass players body, yes I think the money issues need to be resolved but you have to do that, if you appear happy to keep paying for stuff then the other band members will be happy to let you keep doing so, do you really want to let the others have responsibillity for running the van....I think not! I my band (notice the "my" was deliberate) I built the PA (made the singer pay for it though) I sort out anything technical in the band, I supply the lighting (by choice) the one thing I don't do any of is finding gigs, that is down to the other guys
11. I am sure I rocognise him....let me think....oh yes he is always stood in front of me at every gig I go to! Mrs 2611 and I went to see Gary Numan at the Forum a few years ago just before he went on stage 2 German fellas rolled up, both 6ft 4 plus who the proceeded to kiss each other and fondle each others bottoms throughout the show.....not the best Numan gig we have been to
12. I thought this was a UK seller, I have seen quite a few attractive looking guitars and basses for sale from this seller over time but they are usually described as not being very original and hence look seriously overpriced at times
13. Mrs2611 is quite happy with me being a musician, it was part of what attracted her to me in the first place, she comes along to most of the gigs and makes it a social thing with the other wags, so no issues there, however since I discovered Basschat she has mentioned it being like the other woman and we may as well be devorced.....Gee I love you guys you'll never leave me will you
14.
Great basses, but maybe a tad heavy for a bad back.
++1 Great basses but they do tend to be made from granite made to look like wood
15.
Anything other than force myself to continue practising. Tried that. Didn't work. In fact, enforced breaks (of weeks, in the last instance) have been of more benefit to me than extended practice. You come back to it to find your fingers working at double speed and all sorts of previously unplayable passages flowing forth like bananas out the ying-yang. Must be the old subconscious processing and refining.
+ 1 to that, I really should be practicing tonight but I have had a sh**ty day at work and really can't be bothered tonight as I know I will just get the hump because I can't play something right first time, that will just make for a wasted session
16. I like the way the seller has gone to the trouble of dating the instrument whilst clearly not bothering to look at any photo's of what he is dating, I might message him and suggest it is actually a 1950's Hoover
17. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-1950s-FENDER-Precision-Bass-Guitar-Serial-No-9113-/310678715931?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item4855e4fe1b Spotted this on Ebay today, it has me totally convinced
18. One of the bands I play in has decided (for reasons totally lost on me!) to cover The Bucket by Kings of Leon, the bass is rather indistinct in the mix but to my ear the bass is playing a high D through the entire verse and only ever changes for the chorus, I have had a look at the online tab which reckons it is a D A G riff throughout the verse but I think it is a guitar playing that part...anyway listened to it far more times (4 to be precise) than the song deserves What do you think bass players of the world? Oh yeah, sorry for subjecting you to this Sorry Sorry
19. Any interest in a Status Series 3000 headless and some cash your way? It's not mint but well travelled and in what I assume is its original hardcase
20. Every time these ads get pulled it reminds me why I don't own the real thing which is a shame because they are some nice looking basses out there that I could own
21. Sound Pad in Barnstable had some rather GAS inducing product last time I was down that way
22. I have worked with some excellent sound guys over the years as a bass player and have worked with some excellent bass players as a sound guy, I have never and have never seen a sound guy go up to the bass player and start messing with his eq, I would assume that most players getting to work with a decent pa will know how they want to sound and from there it is surely down to the sound guy to get the overall mix right....sure I have gone up to bands and said FFS if you want to hear the vocals I suggest you turn your amps down and let the pa do the work but other than that eq wise a decent pa and sound guy should be able to cope
23. Doing a single wedding tomorrow and if you ask me that's one too many for the whole year!
24. Oi Dave there's smoke coming out the p a, should I call the fire brigade.....tends to get us a bit of quiet for a couple of seconds
25. Still there and I quite like the natural finish and the price ain't bad
