1. Main gigging bass for the last 6-7 years - Millenium BXP, £199 at the time! Don't ask how many times it's paid for iteself. I love the clarity and definitiion for playing metal etc, and the active pre- is very quiet and great for DI-ing.
2. My main giging Peavey bass has individual finger bridges for each string and sounds great. But I don't know if it sounds great because of them, or because of the 5 bolt neck joint, or the pups, or the construction techniques to be quite honest...
3. My band ranges from mid 30s to early 60s. Our 63 year old drummer is the fittest in the band, because he has to be. He keeps listening to new music and re-inventing himself. TBH none of us has ever grown up in the 'pipe and slippers, sit in watching TV' kind of way, and I don't think we ever will. The only concessions to age are drinking in moderation and early nights when not gigging.
4. I've never gigged a bass that cost me more than £199. Many bass players (with expensive basses) get upset when your Yamaha/Aria/Peavey outperforms their $1000 plank.
5. As above, my band Delirium are playing Gasworks rock club in Bradford on New Years Eve. Mainly covers with 1 or 2 originals as well, and best of all it's one of the few clubs that you'll get in free on NYE. DJs playing, we're likely to start around 9ish, possibly with a guest spot. Cheers, Jon
6.
Anyway, SWOD can't be metal because it's one of my favourite albums and I bloody hate metal.
Definitely metal
7. From that era - I think you're right! But also agree with thebigyin about other good stuff, Halford's vocal on Victim Of Changes is unreal!
8. Play songs that you like and are passionate about whether that be well known or a bit more 'niche' - then temper that with a little bit of commercial sensibility. Work extremely hard at what you do and with good enough musicians you will be successful. DO care about the details. DO squeeze every last bit out of what you have available, even if that means different people singing lead, different people singing harmonies on different songs, or playing that tricky keyboard part on your bass.
9. Content - but could always improve.
10. 11 first set, 12 second set. Up to 3 encores, but usually 2 at most. We play for about 50 minutes and then an hour upwards. This is quite usual on the circuit we play.
11. I can't see the point, you're not supposed to look at the front of the fretboard, just a few dots on the top are more use to me. Of course he may be right, I'm just an average bassist in a p/t rock band.
12. Goes to show how much experiences vary. I LOVE Vitalogy, many of the best lyrics they've written - I know it's not stadium rock but there's more to this band than singalong anthems surely...
13. Varies, we have venues that book 3 or 6 or 12 months ahead, so we do have some bookings to the end of 2014 already. It would suit me better to do 3 months ahead....
14. We had our quietest ever since I joined the band on Saturday, right in the middle of a purple patch with the gigs going really well and plenty of rebookings at venues that suit us. Was it the Dr Who thing? Many but not all landlords seem to be doing a poor job of promoting their venues.
15.
Not a bass one, but a peculiarity of the way they speak up here in Yorkshire, is the use of 'while' when they really mean 'until'. "I'm working while 3 o'clock" means "I'm working until 3 o'clock" in Yorkshire. Problematic when faced with a sign at a railway crossing that says "Wait while the red lights are flashing"...
It's been part of local dialect for a long time, even used by this Shandy after living here for a while: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=SIAy1v_3LM0#t=8
16. One downside is that the 1x15 may add very little to what you hear, for extra effort in carting it around. Surely the 6x10 should move enough air on its own?
17. Hmmm, probably depends what kind of sound you have to begin with. I've always liked a bright 'full range' sound, and when adding on distortion my sound got more middy and narrow, so didn't work for me. As ever, whatever works, works.
18. I've played a few, and owned a Japanese neck-thru bass that was 'ahem' extremely reminiscent of the big R. When I played in an original punk n roll band with a pick it was a clanging, raucous joy! Love the sound of them. As people have said, they can be a bit limited for some applications.
19. From experience - don't add more distortion/overdrive, the biggest sound is (usually) your normal sound but louder.
20. Decent pups and you're most of the way towards a good sound.
21. Where's Bill? What a disgrace We'll be playing Children Of The Grave tonight for Bill.
