1. Do you mean Squire or Squier? You may have been searching on the wrong spelling.
2. Signed. IIRC there was a change in planning policy to do with this.
3. I feel your pain (see signature below).
4. I nominate the Line 6 Spider 30 - an indescribably hideous aural caricature of a guitar amp! Bring it on...
5.
My rationale was that it is all very well at home and a rehearsal but until you have gigged it doesn't count.
Very true.
6. Brian Eno once said, 'With music, you can crash and burn and still walk away'.
7.
My backup is a Genz Benz Streamliner 600. We put the vocals through it once when the PA failed and it coped extremely well.
And mine is the 900. I don't take it out as a backup though, it generally sits in the cupboard.
8. I'm really happy with my TGI Extreme - I think it was £37 delivered from Bassgear, but they don't seem to stock them now.
9.
For (smooth) jazz in a Christian/gospel context I'd recommend Abe Laboriel's band (Koinonia - think a Christian version of Fourplay. Mostly instrumental and VERY VERY GOOD whether you're spiritual minded or not) or his solo/duo work with Justo Almario.
I think I've still got a cassette of Koinonia somewhere!
10. I'm on it!
11. My AVRI Precision. Before that I used to go out shopping with no particular agenda and come home with a bass that took my fancy.
12.
There are some quite good ones in this thread. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/275408-4-question-you-would-ask-a-new-prospective-band/page__hl__band__fromsearch__1
...and I asked my same 4 questions in that thread too, but in a different order.
13. In no particular order, the questions I suggest to ask before investing (time, money, energy) in ANY business: 1. Corporate structure - Boss and employees? Partnership? 2. Unique selling point (USP) - What differentiates you from the competition? 3. Cash turnover - The top line. 4. Business model - What's it about? Fun? Money? Self-esteem?
14.
I'm very disappointed to note that none of the above replies supply the essential information:

Height of bass player
Weight of bass player
Approx. state of fitness of bass player
Degree of intimidation associated with bass player

Ahem - HEFT of bass player?
15. Mighty tempted but couldn't live with over 2in of overhang each side of my cabs - aargh!
16. The bass guitar is a substantial instrument, and any part of it can be applied to the ribs of a drunkard/idiot to assist in propelling them away from the stage. If you are not playing but need to guide a drunk off the stage, shake hands while simultaneously grasping their left lapel with your left hand beneath their right arm. Push their right arm down onto your left and they will tend to move forward to relieve the pressure.
17. What bass were you playing before the Jazz?
18. Lost, just like Major Tom.
19. Why not go with Chromes to start with? I have them on my 3 Precisions, and they all sound different.
20. The 1-finger-per fret approach comes from the skinny-string guitar technique known as position playing, where it works fine. It transfers ok above about the 5th fret on the bass, but if you apply it rigidly nearer the headstock you will find it very uncomfortable. Here's what Scott Devine says about it:
21. Looks like I won't be along today after all. Apologies to anyone who was hoping to get their valves tested! Graeme
22.
It looks like the silhouette of a dancing roast chicken. Either that or I need to change these meds.
Nurse - the screens!
23.
Dim question - 900w @4ohm, but only one speaker output - so you couldn't get 2 8 ohm cabs into it? It would need to be one decent rated cab to make use of that power?
There are (and have been) quite a few heads rated roughly 400-500W into 8ohm, 800-900W into 4ohm. As long as one cab has two sockets connected in parallel, then as deanovw says, you can daisy-chain two 8ohm cabs to give a 4ohm load.
24.
I appreciate you probably alreadyp layed the gig now, but what I do is as follows: Create trello board - see this for example https://trello.com/b/yppn6J2D Create cards on board for each song Have a listen to each song on set list, give it a basic easy - hard rating (use labels on trello) Go through each song and write out a chord chart for it, or intersperse it with tab. As you do, move it from first to second column. is the band happy to have ipads on stage? If so then get something like "onsong" or "forscore" where you can transpose charts at a click of a button. I like onsong because you can use use tags to put tab into it as well (although it doesn't transpose tabs) Go through starting with hardest songs and make sure you learn them. Throw some easy ones in too so you feel like you are making progress. It is very depressing if you dont complete some things early on. But generally start with hardest
I do a similar thing but with Excel.
25. @ Funky Dunky, I have done a transcription for 5-string in the original Eb, plus an adaptation for 4 in E. PM me if you want the pdf (standard notation only).
