1. I've had a couple of Laney guitar amps, an LC15 and a VC30, which I enjoyed while I had them. Unfortunately my first bass amp was a Laney 100W combo - need I say any more?
2. This is (I think) the original Blue Mikey. It has a dock connector for fitting to older-style iPods etc - it doesn't fit the more recent models with a Lightning connector. I used it with my 160GB iPod to make live gig and rehearsal recordings like this brief (mono) clip: My Generation bass solo It may also work with older iPhones but I can't guarantee it. It definitely doesn't work with my iPad though. The mic itself has 3 different sensitivity settings. To use it, plug it into your device, then open Voice Memos and choose the quality setting you want. When you're done, either delete or save. When you connect your iPod to your computer it automatically transfers the recording into your Voice Memos folder. Simples! Comes in original box with instructions. £22 delivered in UK.
3. Kala U-bass and Markbass 801 - you can barely see it under my seat!
4. Chord tones are probably the most important things to know. Work your way through this free online tutorial at your own pace: http://www.studybass.com/study-guide/
5. On a Mac, CMD+TAB does the same thing.
6. Short scales definitely bring something different to the party. We often think of 34in as the 'standard' scale length, but it was really just an informed guess by Leo Fender, somewhere between the 41in+ of the double bass and 24-25in of the guitar.
7. The MU standard contract contains a clause plainly stating that the kit is not for the use of the client, but I doubt any of those bozos would have had sight of your booking agreement!
8. Get an American Vintage Reissue - used if you can find one. The finish will soon pick up dings, and you'll have the best of both worlds.
9. All PMs up-to-date. Get your offers in before this goes for a silly price!
10.
I've been using one of these for years. Fantastic bit of kit even if the tech is a little old by todays standards. A bargain at this price.
Thanks gelfin, can't argue with that! OK some more pluses and minuses as they occur to me: Plus 250 virtual tracks for storing alternative takes Main and monitor outputs Digital in and out on SPDIF coax connectors Real faders and pan pots for all 16 record/playback channels plus master fader Real gain pots for all 8 analog input channels - ideal for location recording, compared to the costly 8-channel interface you would need if using with a software DAW on a laptop or tablet 6 rotary encoders to the right of the display, for quick access to channel EQ and FX settings Minus The hard drive can make a bit of acoustic noise Not the easiest bit of kit to learn (but easier than Roland kit IMO!) I am pretty open on the trades front - if in doubt, drop me a PM Any tech questions about the machine, ask them here or follow the link to the manuals. Here's something I recorded recently on the DPS16:
11. 'I'll just get an inexpensive bass to use for home recording', that's what I said to myself all those years ago...
12. Swindon has a fairly busy live music scene, especially for a town that some would consider a cultural wasteland.
13. Rehearse your stage moves. Seriously. If you practise playing while staying still, that's what you'll do on stage. Try your moves at home in front of a mirror, and do them at rehearsal.
14. Bump for a stocking filler Swiss Army knife gadget.
15. Forgot to mention the installed hard drive is 20GB. Although this is small by modern standards, it still represents a hell of a lot of track-hours at full CD quality. The hard drive in the external bay is 10GB so plenty to back up individual projects but not the entire 20GB disk.
16. My two MIJ basses have really glossy necks, and bot are lovely to play, not sticky at all. My USA '62 RI looks glossy, but gets very sticky when warm. I have taken to scraping off the excess lacquer with a Stanley knife blade!
17.
Well done, that man..!
Thanks Douglas! This is really working out well. I've just transferred anything worth saving from my Akai DPS16 and formatted the hard drive (yikes), and paid for Reaper, so I'm committed. I found some recordings I did for a singer friend in 1999, originally on a Roland VS804, with many of the sounds created on a guitar synth. I'm going to finish these off and present him with a CD!
18.
Hey! I'm new to this thread, but I'm wondering if any of you guys can help me. I'm trying to get a tone that sounds like a frog on a pogo stick. Any ideas where to start?
I've got a frog and a pogo stick that you can hire, but you'll have to train the frog yourself.
19. This pedal combines the metal-can chip of the original Dyna Comp with the benefits of true-bypass switching, external DC power, LED status indicator, and internal trim pots. I used this pedal frequently on guitar when I fronted a country trio, until it was ousted by a Cali76 (natch). It sounds fat and a bit dirty, and also a bit noisy if you stop to listen. It is in very good nick, complete with box, manual, and knob cover for adjustments using your toe(!) Bearing in mind the noise thing, I am letting this go for £40 delivered in the UK.
20. This is a very handy bit of kit. It accepts jack or XLR inputs, provides up to 60dB of mic gain, and has switchable phantom power. Ideal for creating extra mic channels when you only have line inputs left. In excellent condition, boxed with 9V AC power supply (note - that's AC, it won't run off a Boss PSU!) [s]£35[/s] £30 delivered in UK.
21. This Akai DAW was very highly regarded when it came out in 2001. Of course things have moved on in the last 15 years, but it is still a capable performer. The spec Rather than reproduce all the guff, here are some handy links: Original manual Addendum to manual (following various improvements) Sound-on-Sound review (saved as Word doc) Pro Sound review The description This has been the hub of my home studio for the last 10 years. I never got on very well with computer recording, much preferring hardware like this. It includes a 4-bus fx board, and has the last-issued software version (v3.02). For collection in person / meet-up, I am also including a SCSI drive bay and cable, containing a hard drive and CD burner plus spare cassette. NOTE: this machine does not do USB! Condition is good for its age. All pots and jacks work well, except for the headphone output on the front of the unit, which suffers intermittent connection. Some of the membrane switches are rather stiff. The display is a little dim, but perfectly legible under indoor lighting when optimised with the contrast control. The pictures The price [s]£125 for the 16-track (excluding delivery).[/s] [s]If collecting in person. meeting up etc, I will include the SCSI drive bay and lead. It's too heavy and awkward to include in a parcel.[/s] New deal on the table: £100 cash on collection, includes free SCSI bay etc. OR £110 delivered to mainland UK (but no SCSI drive bay). Trades Absolutely - hit me up by private message.
