Freemans had three bassists (Peter Hook, Andy Rourke and Mani) and Primary by The Cure was two basses with no keys or guitars.

True, true.

So it's not marketing gone mad then, more marketing done quite well.

"Art meets guitar"? Chop saw meets guitar more like!

I have the Hidersine one, can't compare it with anything else but if a more expensive one has a lot thicker padding then I don't want it as it would be too bulky. I've been using mine for about three years for gigs and rehearsals once or twice a week and it shows no signs of wear at all, I'm not too precious with it either, it's there to do a job so if it gets a bit abused then so be it. I really can't fault it, not just great for the money but great full stop.
That has to be the worst. A band with not enough material having to flesh out a show!
Agreed. I saw Stiltskin at The Cooperage in Plymouth after their one hit. They only had enough material for a very short set and then had to repeat a couple as an encore. The gig was alright really but if you're going to tour the country please learn enough songs to play for an hour without repeating.

We've had the 'Who did you see last live' and 'Who's the worst band you've seen live' threads. Inspired by these two, let's hear about the gigs you didn't think would be great but turned out amazing. You know the ones you went to reluctantly with mates, or your other halves favourite band that you agreed to see, or the festival ones you've stumbled upon. To start you off with The Cult at Bristol academy in 2011, I'd always liked The Cult but hadn't bought anything of theirs since Sonic Temple, I saw they were touring again and it was only about £15 a ticket so Mrs. M and myself decided to go, it was only in weeks time and had sold out, bugger! Thought I'd have a quick look on ebay and a nice chap was selling two tickets at face value as he couldn't go, result. I wasn't expecting much, maybe the result of a low ticket price, small venue tour and the fact the Ian Astbury was touring with the doors previously and I thought The Cult were long gone but I was blown away. Astburys voice was still as good as in the eighties, Duffys big white Gretsch sounded amazing and the whole atmosphere in the small venue was brilliant. My wife just had a similar experience at the Alice Cooper show in Plymouth, she doesn't know any AC apart from what she's heard through me and wasn't fused at all about going, but she thoroughly enjoyed it, more than me I think, she hasn't stopped telling people about it. So go on then, let's hear your surprise 'best gigs'.

I had one of the Thomann anniversary ones in my basket while I pondered whether I actually needed it. . . . and then they sold out.
I absolutely LOVE Hanoi Rocks and Michael Monroe. I've seen them a few times and they always deliver. Never seen Michael on his own though.
He really really needed to invest in radio mic. He had a roadie running around the stage after him untangling his mic lead permanently. Very energetic, climbing all over the amps and PA, running around the stage and behind the drum riser and the roadie had to chase him around unhooking everything and everyone. Comical but bloody annoying for the rest of the band night after night I'd have thought
I saw Whitesnake in Newcastle City Hall around '82.... . . . .
The only gig I've walked out of was Whitesnake in Plymouth (early nineties). Support act were supposed to be Pride And Glory and being an Ozzy fan I agreed to go with a a couple of mates, Zakk Wylde and James LoMenzo should be good I thought. Pride And Glory didn't show so I was already peed off and then Whitesnake came on. After about fifteen minutes of tediousness they did that solo sh*te, everyone but guitar went offstage and a five minute guitar solo ensued, I made it though that but then the same happened with bass, then drums. I don't know how long the drum solo lasted because we all walked out after five minutes and went on the piss instead. The only positive I can scrape out of all that solo crap is that at all David Coverstory wasn't wailing away flatly in a can't really be arsed to be here style over all of it.

I saw Alice Cooper a couple of weeks ago in Plymouth doing one of two warm up gigs for the Motley Crue tour. I didn't know if he'd do the full theatrical show as it was a warm up and whether he'd even still have it in him. I needn't have worried, he did the full show with all the bells and whistles and was completely on top of his game. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Michael Monroe was support (Hanoi Rocks) and that excellent as well, straight back to the eighties, great fun.
Women! They should stick to buying handbags or candles or what ever it is they need !
I once complained about the amount of shoes and boots my wife has telling her "You only have one pair of feet, how many shoes do you need?" To which I was told "You only have one pair of hands, how many basses do you need?" Well that was me told!

Oh yes, my suggestion is purely home use only, just thought I'd throw it in the mix as an option as money seems tight.

Behringer monitors, http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Behringer-MS40-Active-Studio-Monitor-Speakers-inc-1-Year-Warranty-Slight-Damage-/172001785816?nav=SEARCH Something like this would give you your guitar/bass effects, I personally wouldn't worry about it being bass or guitar orientated if you need both, just get one with the effects you want http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Guitar-Multi-Effects-Pedal-Zoom-G2-1u-/262138094266?nav=SEARCH These headphones have got very good reviews. Almost the same as Phil Jones Bass headphones, soundwise virtually the same. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Edifier-H850-Over-Ear-Headphones-Black/dp/B0083DPIIA A couple of leads and you're good to go. I actually use my setup like as my main home hifi now as those monitors sound lovely.

How loud do you need to be at home? Personally I don't bother with an amp at home. I have a pair of Behringer Ms40 monitors with a cheapy Korg AX3A and my computer going into them (they have two separate volume controls, one for the Korg input and one for the computer input), I also have a lead hooked up to them for phone or mp3 player input (same volume control as the computer), lots of inputs on the back. I normally use headphones and have an amazing sound but they will pump out a decent level of bass guitar before distorting if you don't want to use headphones, not enough to rock out with but certainly enough to annoy neighbours so enough to practice with. The Behringer monitors were £50 s/h, the Korg pedal was £30 s/h and I use a pair of Motorheadphones Iron Fist (really good imo) which were only £35 new from Amazon. So all in a little over a hundred quid. All new would around two hundred. I'm not computer savvy at all but I assume the Korg pedal could be replaced by some sort of VST plugin on the computer for your guitar effects. Just another angle to consider

All that makes perfect sense Andy, and yes you're right, now you've pointed it out to me, the wings are almost just cosmetic the way you've done this. I did follow the other build you mentioned, and your others. I really admire your builds, more than most, as you approach it in the same way I do with most things, ie work out a way that works for you that isn't necessarily the 'done' way but nonetheless achieves the desired result. And very nice results you get. I was actually very pleased with myself when you commented on my Variax makeover. Anyway I'm sounding creepy now . Looking forward to the progress on this one .

I used to pay a small boy to stand on a box behind me and put his fingers in my ears, in the break he would shine my shoes, but that was frowned upon so I thought I'd try these. I've got boxes full of foam ones at work but they just muffle everything, hopefully these won't. If they do then at least it's only the price of a slice of caviar on bruschetta wasted.

Just ordered some. It's been on my 'to do' list for a while, I have to have a yearly hearing test through work and I know I've lost more top end than I should of so it's time to start using something. Thanks for the discount code .

My only concern with bonding the neck in last would be that you can only clamp it to the top as the two wings are now fixed, will not being able to clamp the neck to the wings be an issue, also if the gap for the neck is nice and snugg will the glue scrape off as you insert it? Or am I overthinking it all as usual? Certainly not knocking it as I've never built a guitar before, just curious .
But it's got 'l@@k' on it, so I'll never even consider it.
Latatk?

what's the future like for bass has it all been done?
Maude replied to zawinul's topic in General Discussion
Seven string ukulele is the way forwards Surely we don't know the 'next big thing'. Before funk nobody had heard funk etc. Although reading a lot of posts on here it would seem a lot of folks are too intolerant of new music to allow the next big thing to happen. I imagine when every new style appeared on the scene the 'town elders' said it would never catch on, it's not like music was in our day. -
I have just done your survey I agree with other comments ie my increased heart rate is from physical exertion more than any kind of anxiety. Being very active on stage I am out of breath after some songs. Also, I ticked the bass box but I play doublebass, yes it's all bass but the anxiety/stresses are over different things.

Mine came in a hard case, second hand from here so I don't know if it was a Yamaha one or one bought after original purchase. I can have a look and see if it's got any labels on it but it's a in our rehearsal space so I probably won't see it until next week sometime. I post back with any news when I see it
