1. The short scale length probably goes a long way to giving it the sound you love, if you could stick a P neck on it it would sound different. Also to add to the 34" hollow body list my Yamaha Bex4 is also 34".
2. One of these was my first 'real' bass after having a hideous SG copy bass which gave me the bug. Have a 'I'd love another but can't justify it' type bump. I traded mine in at Mansons In Plymouth, I wonder if it made it to South Wales
3.
I might make one of those for my misses.
Will she mind being stored beside the wardrobe?
4. We change the style of a lot of our covers. Pretty Vacant in a swing style, Groove is in the Heart starts off swing and then at the 1,2,3 bit changes to a fast bluegrass, I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor as a rockabilly song, etc. The punters seem to really love recognising the song but not really twigging exactly what it is for a little bit, usually when the chorus comes in. Great fun for all involved and if you get bored playing a crowd pleaser you can keep it in the set but change the style to keep it interesting. Oh yeah and believe it or not I have woken up in a skip, but I wasn't naked so probably doesn't count, ah alcohol, my dear friend
5. Ha ha, there's not many adverts that start with the words "in atrocious condition".
6. That is a stunning looking guitar
7.
Craig Adams. ( The Expelairs, The Sisters of Mercy, The Mission, The Cult, Coloursound, The Alarm, Spear of Destiny and Theatre of Hate, Voltaire. Oh and The Metal Gurus.
Definitely Craig Adams, I didn't mention him because I didn't think he fell into the categories but I'll definitely give him a big plus one!
8.
No, I'm convinced the JP haters are confusing "don't like" with "don't understand" Blue
Let me assure you Blue, I don't like it.
9. I even googled 'Bushel bass' but came up with nothing I think a few names would recognised but maybe not the faces.
10. Ok Blue, you're right. Because I don't like Jaco I'm ignorant and stupid, I'll be going into town later to sell all my gear, fold up my two bands and cancel all the bookings. Is there any other hobby you could suggest I could try with my obviously limited intelligence? I'm asking you because you appear to know me better than I do and I clearly can't think for myself. If I did think for myself then I'd only end up thinking stupid things like how arrogant you appear telling people to sell their basses because they don't agree with the majority, but of course that's just me being stupid.
11. Would PiL be considered New Wave? Well Post Punk must be a type of punk so I'm nominating Jah Wobble.
12. I've just given Teen Town a listen as I've never heard it before, it's just reinforced my view even more. It's not just the bass either, I was ready to turn it off before the bass even came in such is my dislike for this type of music but I kept going, even had a second listen to make sure but only got half way through. It sounded like the backing music to a tense stake out scene in Cagney and Lacey or some other 70's cop show, either that or just a two and a half minute intro to a song that never arrived. This isn't a childish rant but truly what it sounded like to me. I don't think I'll be converted any time soon and I'm happy not to take inspiration from it. I gave it a go though
13.
If you are as accomplished a player as you seem to be insinuating, I am genuinely surprised that you are that unaware of JP. I am not suggesting every bass player should have to take a test or be able to play a flawless version of Teen Town before they are allowed to take a gig, but I thought that they might at least be aware of one of the most influential and celebrated bass players ever! Might be an age thing…!
Could be an age thing, I'm 42 but I don't know at what age I'm supposed to like him. I'd agree it's more a genre thing. Jazz fusion, or whatever you want to call that style of music, repels me. I have no interest in listening to it or researching it so why should I know somebody who plays it? I've tried to like Stanley Clarke a couple of times in the past because I foolishly bought into this idea that I should listen to these 'gods' but it just makes me not want to play bass or ensure that I never play anything that sounds similar, so it's better for me to not listen to a genre that repels me. Most of the hereos lauded on here are similar in that I have heard of them and encountered their music at points in my life but have absolutely no desire to give them any more of my listening time. If I don't like their music then why would I? I'll rock the boat by saying these people include Stanley Clarke, Jaco, Geddy, Billy Sheehan, the Dream Theatre bloke, Les Claypool, Victor Wooten, Chris Squire, Mark King, there are others but you get the idea. If this makes me ignorant, stupid, uninformed or whatever insult makes folks feel better then that's fine. I'll just keep listening to music that I love and inspires me and keep playing what's in my heart and soul. If that's OK with everyone
14. Bizarrely Sid Vicious could almost be one, but I agree that there probably isn't one. I still maintain that at almost every gig with our rock band you could line up the three 'guitarists' at the front and ask the crowd to point out the bassist and no one would be able to. Not so much with the acoustic band as I play doublebass, which is a bit more obvious, although most still don't know what it is. How many more times can a comedy genius point out that "that's a big violin"?
15. I actually like Foxton but it made me chuckle.
16.
JJ who has still got a killer sound (at least in 2011) when saw him last. The guy from Elvis Costellos Attractions - great technique. Norman of Blockheads fame - quite groovy form this genre. Never really enjoyed Foxton though lots have included him. For me his tone wasn't great - technique nothing special - haircut by mum.
Excellent Tone........ not great. Technique.......nothing special. Haircut.........by Mum.
17. Suzi Quattro, but that's the singer thing again.
18.
There are a lot of myths about humbucker vs single coils, most of which can be largely dispelled by browsing you tube and watching people playing Slayer or Metallica riffs on telecasters or pristine sounding Gilmour or Clapton solos on Les Pauls.
A bit like bassists claiming they can only play certain music on certain basses
19.
When it comes down to it, I have never met a half decent bass player (regardless of genre) in the real world who isn’t a Jaco fan or at least appreciative of his contribution to music / modern bass playing.
And another insinuation that if you aren't a fan or don't appreciate Jacos contribution then you can't even be a half decent player. The comments of others, in and out of the music business, would suggest I'm at least a half decent player yet Jaco has never registered on my radar. I have, since this thread, listened to him but along with Stanley Clarke his music makes me whince. Whether he's 'all that' or not I don't care, but you don't have to to be a 'half decent player'. Most of the players held up as 'bass gods' on heres music ranges from being strongly disliked by me to making me recoil when I hear it, bar a couple, but that's not a problem as there's masses of other music for me to enjoy.
20.
Maybe we should now wait and see if, after subsequent listening, the OP thinks any differently.
Oh how very considerate of you. I say burn him, stone him, tie him up and chuck him in a river, give him a chinese burn, I dunno, let's do something. My torch is lit and my pitchfork sharpened.
21.
I'm on an android phone which isn't letting me view imbedded videos at the moment
My phone updated the android software yesterday and a the vids are back again Oh and I'll throw in Cannonball by The Breeders too.
22. How far in timescale can we go before we open the debate of what is and isn't punk? Although I'm sure aseemingly innocent thread wouldn't descend into a school playground bitching contest on here So with that in mind I'm going to nominate Matt Freeman and Fat Mike, both firm favourites with me.
23. Obviously I don't know, but I'm wondering if the OP is thinking that the higher the ohms rating of a cab the more damage it could do. If this is the case then it's the other way around, going below the stated amp rating causes damage not above,a four ohm load is as low as you want to go, eight will be fine. If my thought isn't the case then I apologise.
24. I have quite a craving for a Danelectro Longhorn in gold sparkle but can't really justify buying one, so it would be nice to wake up to one after the big man has emptied his sack.
25. Bloody autocorrect. That'll be Freebass, not Freemans
