1. Check out http://www.billfitzmaurice.com - the Jacks seem to be a popular choice, and there are plenty of threads detailing the build diaries of various builds on here. Electro-voice also provide free plans, though without the detailed instructions that BFM provides.
  2.
+1, i reckon the guy just doesn't know ebay and possibly just wants what he paid for it. It looks all good except the difference in coating from the front headstock to the rear. I havn't seen that on a fender before. Otherwise i wish i had the funds for it
The colour difference is quite common really. The front of the headstock was finished in nitro, so it ages more than the rest of the neck. But yeah, looks kosher to me as well.
  3. Not a Boss pedal by any chance? As in Hugo?
  4.
AVOID THE FOLLOWING: Drummers: Billy Fanta - Leeds - Nasty alopecia, cover your pint. Terry Gibbler - Slough - Wears a ski mask all night, even during interval. Brian Filbert - Okehampton - Haemophiliac who plays all his solos with his hands. Bring paper towels. Guitarists: Ben Feesty - Colchester - Endless lies about his "big patio" - he hasn't got one. Matt Edgeless - Leith - Only plays in key of A. Gets sulky and leaves if asked to transpose Phil 'The Waltzer' Orm - P'boro - Gets pissed and beats on any midgets in the audience. Total twat. Keys Manny Boyes - Bicester - A junkie with only one arm. Obvious problems. Liam Monplaisir - Hereford - Great player, but steals carpet from gigs. Loose bowels. Use a wireless.
Didn't he use to play for Samson?
  5.
I think I`ll buy it. Or else I could jam my bo*loc*s in the front door.
Well it made me laugh anyway!
  6.
Right, im currently using a little giant 350. its terribly quiet and clips at half volume, is it actually clipping or is the gauge on them dodgy? i dont get how it can be so weak. I was running it through a 4 ohm load yesterday and after about 45 minutes it cut out. the fan never actually does its job either. Anyone else had the same troubles? mainly with the clipping
I've never had one, but the comment about them being quiet is very common. I've also seen a few posts about them overheating, much like them superfly that preceded it. Try a search of the forum - I'm sure you'll turn up some info.
  7.
Like WH said! I had exactly the same problem with my Ampeg head and it turned out to be the input socket - just needed tightening up! Cost pennies and saved a fortune!
Yep. If you've got any switch cleaner it could be well worth trying some of that on the input socket. If you haven't you could try opening up the head and and scraping the contact points with some suitable implement. Really hope you have some joy as it's getting rather late for tonight's gig.
  8. Sorry to read about your loss Dave. Don't get too worried about the posts offering £50 - it's something of a standing joke around here and not intended seriously. Hence the smilies. Best of luck with your sale.
Hi again The shop will give me £100 trade in on my amp which should mean I'll have about £230 max to spend. Are the Squier Affinity packages any good or the Epiphone EBO? Regards Peter
I found the Affinity range to be pretty variable, anything from very mediocre to very nice. The electrics fall into the rubbish category though, from pickups right through to the output jack. You really need to try the actual bass you'll be buying. No experience of the EB0 though.
  10.
Actually, here's another of my screwy arbitrary principles which somehow work. It applies to all musicians, but let's assume I've just come across a really technically competent bass player, and I'm debating whether or not to hire him. The question is: "Let's imagine a song with a tempo around 90bpm. It's in 4/4, and the bassline is an open E on the first beat of every bar, and let it ring out until the first beat of the next bar. Let's go crazy and pretend that it's a really great song, a generation-defining classic, but it only works if you play it like that, with nothing else. Would you be happy to play it?" If the answer is "no", they don't get the gig. You wouldn't believe how many people I've encountered who have said "no".
So how much does this gig pay?

Oh the irony. Someone suggests you start a thread somewhere other than the Introductions forum to garner a bit more attention, and it gets moved to the Introductions forum! How did you get along with your CSB380? If you liked that maybe you could keep an eye out for another Cardinal - medium scale and a fairly shallow neck makes them easy to play (as you probably already know). Nothing on the 'bay atm, but they do pop up fairly regularly. I wouldn't expect to pay more than £130 for one.
  12. Right first time - it'll go pop. That's because the amp output sockets are wired in parallel as well. Whether you connect directly from the amp or via the link on the cab, the cabs will still be wired in parallel resulting in an impedance too low for your amp to handle.
  13.
Hesitate to ask what you were doing in that category
I was following the link in the comments of this blog. I've got admit I was a little stunned by the MU's announcement, though to be fair there's not much detail in their statement. Still, a rather strange way of announcing things from a body that is supposed to be supporting musicians.
  14.
Why would you?
You wouldn't. Though I think that's the point.
  15. Bid for a gig! I especially like the listing category and the condition description. Bid away! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...330&afsrc=1
  16. There was a thread that covered this a short while ago - specifically this post.
  17. Vox AC30? http://www.flickr.com/photos/ednawelthorpe...in/photostream/
  18. FWIW, the Harley Benton bass was flavour of the month for a while on Basschat's forerunner Bass World. I think they were £99 at the time and quite a few people had them, so they may not be as nasty as you think. Having said that, there's no guessing whether the ones they have now come from the same factory.
  19.
TBH I think you've just about summed it up Musky; TC are either being a bit loose with their 'nominal' impedance ratings or they are happy to let the amp run a bit hot if it is running below 4 ohms. It could be argued that ANY 8 ohm speaker is a best fit figure across the frequency range in which case running any three 8 ohm cabs might be OK so long as you watch that the amp doesn't run too hot. At the end of the day how many of us pump out 1/16th notes on the low B string all night long in which case yes I suppose it is OK to run x3 8 ohm cabs! I know that some Thunderfunk 550B owners have run their amp with x3 8 ohm cabs and the TF is rated to 4 ohms but it is very much a case of 'owner beware' and if you are sensible and ensure you aren't driving them too hard then it'll be fine... just not recommended or warranted by the manufacturer.
That would make a lot of sense. I wonder how many speakers lowest impedance would actually be spot on 8 (or 4) ohms? There's bound to be a bit of rounding that goes on. So if the TC speakers actually measured at 9 ohms and the RH was in fact capable of driving a 3 ohm load safely, then using 3 of the cabs would be fine. If on the other hand they're relying on no bassist pumping out 16th notes on a detuned 5 string I hope for their sake Speed Doom doesn't get invented.
  20. I've got admit I'm a little baffled by all this. All speaker's impedance varies with frequency, which is why they're given a nominal impedance rating. The figure usually given is the lowest impedance that the speaker will see in it's designed operating range. So if the TC speakers are nominally rated at 8 ohms and the RH only runs into a minimum load of 4 ohms, it suggests they're not quoting the minimum impedance the speaker can drop to for the amp to be able to handle 3 '8 ohm' speakers. Or maybe the amp is filtering lower frequencies or something. Anyone got a take on what's going on here?
  21. If you mean will it drive the cabs to their maximum thermal rating (ie the rated wattage) the answer is no. Not that it makes much difference as the maximum the speaker is likely to handle at the bottom end probably won't be much more than a third of the cab's rated RMS anyway. If you really want to push as much power into the cabs as they'll handle you'll need to buy a more powerful head, but it's not really necessary to drive cabs to their maximum rating. Adding a second 104 will give you an extra 60-70% more power, and doubling the number of speakers will give an extra 3db of the volume - the extra power and speakers together will give a useful 5-6db boost in volume.
  22.
Yep... it's the closest I could get
23. That's a great song and I really wasn't expecting something like that from the title. Very Stevie Wonder-esque. I think the lyrics express a fairly universal emotion and I'd lay money on this becoming a future classic. Or maybe the cleaned up version, even though the changed lyrics don't really vent in the same way.
  24.
because you like the sound ?
And of course people buy basses for reasons other than just the tone. Loving the feel/playability, looks or just GAS are all pretty valid reasons for owning a bass.
  25.
So who's avatar in particular is causing problems? I've not noticed any that are particularly NSFW so I feel I'm missing out! If you run an ad blocker then you should be able to add the URL of any avatars you don't want to see to the blocked list and then they'll be gone.
Good idea, but I'd imagine that those people who might find the images NSFW work in a place where they probably don't have the administrative privileges necessary.
Not as such, but as an avatar is supposed to be a representation of yourself (and this goes for other avatars mentioned in this thread), it's a slightly strange choice.
Is that a monkey playing the piano in your avatar?
