I've owned a string of Alembics and, in very general terms, I don't find the lower level models to be in the same league as the higher end ones My favourite was probably a Rogue but even that paled compared to an MK Sig and a Series I had. I think the Lowell models are still nice but, for me, they just don't have that classic Alembic vibe that the nicer ones have. A lot of this is to do with the funky filter based electronics though and you do sometimes find a more basic model has had these fitted as an option. The other thing to say about Alembics is that they are all very different. Each one seems to have its own personality and you absolutely have to try one before you buy. Ultimately I fell out of love with them and, for my really high end bass, chose Fodera instead but when you're up in this sort of quality bracket there's so many little individual things that make the difference

  6. I had a quick look at about 10:30 and got straight through with 2 tickets available. However they were £145 each so I logged straight back out again. . .
  7. What's in the bags? Edit - think I just answered my own question! 2 volume controls, master tone control, output jack, battery clip, and adjustment screws? Umm, interesting, would work nicely with that spare Aguilar OBP1 pre-amp I have kicking around to give active treble and bass plus a passive master tone (at least I think that's achievable!).
  8. I think a 30w head with a pair of 2x12" speakers is a very strange combination. It sounds like you may just have some severe GAS for a big speaker stack. A 200w Trace into a single 2x12 should cover most gigs and if that isn't enough volume I'd go for a a more powerful head rather than opting to lug multiple cabs around. There's very gigs that need more than a pair of 12's unless you're atimg large venues without PA support (and if you're playing large venues you should always have PA support!).

The Trace will be putting out a lot more power than the little Ashdown and a 2x12" cab should cover a lot of gigging situations. I'm assuming you're standing it vertically to get one of the 12's and the tweeter up near your ears. To get more volume overall you should have a good blast at tweaking the mids and maybe even cutting the bass. Your amp will have to work much harder to pump out really low bass but if you can get some nice lower mids cutting through you should find it sounds, and feels, a lot louder on stage

  11. I've tried quite a few Octave pedals and settled on the Aggie a while ago. I've found it tracks better than a lot of others I've used and it's the only one in confident using live. Have you had a look at the various settings on the Aguilar website? I pretty much copied one of those and found it works really well. I think I have more or less each control set around 1 o'clock.
  12. I've owned a Zon and used it as my main gigging bass for ages. It never sounded like any other graphite neck bass I've played and definitely more organic sounding than my old Status and the pair of Modulus basses I ownd at the same time. I like both the US and the Far Eastern ones but build times can be quite long for each and the US custom builds have become quite high priced now if you add flashy tops. Great instruments though
  13. Wow, this is nice. Don't often see the mint green on white look and aged gold hardware is pretty rare out of the CS, must have been a personal custom build (as opposed to a dealer spec instrument).
  14. Definitely start with those mids. If it's booming at you then lose a little bass and tweak the mids on the combo (rather than on the East). Low mids are the place to start but maybe some higher mids too if you're struggling to hear ourself. A second 2x10 might be the answer but I'd work on the amp tone controls first. Might be worth considering an Auralex, or similar, isolation platform to stop the low end booming through the floor.

  16. In case anyone is doubting the value of this then they should know that a masterbuilt option adds $2,600 to any build cost and specifying Dennis Galuszka is another $1,000 plus a 24 month wait list! And that's before you add import duties and VAT. . .

  20. I went to the CMA Songwriter night on Friday and and really enjoyed it. It was hosted by Bob DiPiero who's written hits for loads of top country singers and who had lots of tales about strange ways initial thoughts had come together for songs he'd written. Amazing to think that people with great voices like Brett James don't release anything themselves and just write songs for others (like Martina McBride who was on stage as well). Martina was excellent, as ever, and it was interesting to hear her singing with just an acoustic guitar backing. Striking Matches were an absolute revelation - beautiful, seemingly effortless, harmonies and both of them were really good, fun to watch, guitarists. They've been on Grand Ole Opry over 20 times already and haven't even recorded an album yet! I'd definitely go to something like this again. I did fancy going to one of he main stage concerts but I really dislike the enormo-dome type venues unless I'm lucky enough to get exceptionally good seats so I gave those a miss.
  21. I use one for rehearsing and had to turn it down & cut bass last night at a fairly loud rehearsal. I do find it works best with the funky MarkStand to keep it on the ground but pointing up at me. I find raising it completely off the floor can make it sound quite middley and sometimes a bit thin. I've also bypassed the tweeter and feed the full range signal into the 12" speaker which, for me, smooths the sound out a little.
  22. I have both Mono and Protec bags and marginally prefer the Protec for everyday use. I do have a nasty habit of sticking too much stuff in the nice large pockets though! My real favourite is the inCase but I have a feeling these are discontinued now. It's the closest thug I've come across to a true hybrid and the only one I might trust to take on a plane. Mine never leaves the house though because it is heavier than either a Mono or Protec

I took a batch of presets for an RH450 from the recommended ones on TalkBass and painstakingly tweaked them to get what I thought was three perfect tones for my band. Took it out on a gig and every one of them absolutely sucked in a live band situation. Really put me off the whole idea of infinitely variable tone tweaking options. Definitely worth trying to get a simple start point (or points given you have 3 pre-sets) and make small adjustments (with a patient band) at a loud rehearsal so you know how it's going to work in a live mix

He literally can't keep up with demand because some of his more recent designs have excited players all over the world!
  25. That's a really nice top, looks much prettier than others I've seen. I've been playing 33" scale basses a lot recently and it's amazing how effortless they are to play
