1. Yes - it was many years' ago at The Gallery in Camden. Martin P had a Jaydee Custom 4, which was possibly a slightly shorter scale (33"??) than what I'm used to, and the action was quite low which made it ultra-playable. Add a David Eden World Tour amp + cab ~ and it was just one of the best 1/2 hour I've had testing a Bass whilst in a shop. I didn't want to put it down. I think it is slightly psychological ~ the solution is (possibly) to make sure that your Basses are set up properly in the first place! :+)

8.
I find these YouTube Rig Rundown videos can be quite an interesting watch and was thinking that a lot of members here have a list of gear in their signatures but the way we all use our gear can vary quite a bit. Thought it might be interesting to hear how you use your gear through the signal chain and why in a kinda Rig Rundown style. ...
I'll try and keep this brief ... :+) I started out on BASS in 1990 ~ so plenty of time to accumulate tons of gear ~ can you ever have too much? What I have now might be less than a 1/4 of everything I've ever owned. I've never been a Pro (or even a semi-pro) and haven't gigged or been interested in bands or playing Live for more than 10-years. Who knows? that could change in future. I now write and record my own songs at home, which I would describe as post-rock Dreampop with Jazz and Funk influences ~ I don't expect anyone else to be interested. I've always enjoyed playing and writing music just for me. I record via a USB interface with Reaper 5 into a modest spec Windows 10 laptop, and the focal point of my set up is my lovely Trace GP12XV valve pre-amp. My effects all go into the pre-amp's effects loop and then out again, via the DI post-eq, to the USB interface. A Carl Martin Pro Power takes care of all the 9 and 12 Volt stuff. BASS > effects loop send > tuner > octaver > filter/wah > delay > tremolo > compressor > looper > effects send return.
9. Late 1980's. Everyone else in my first band (covers) had their roles - and nobody wanted to be the Bass player ... where have you heard that before? I couldn't afford to buy a Bass until a couple of years' later, so I played Bass parts on a synth. 1990 and here's my first Bass and combo!
10. If I may. A positive recommendation for Victor at Bass Gear in Twyford, not too far from me in Reading ~ Berkshire. TBH I prefer to trade on-line (strings, accessories, etc) but for one particular purchase; A small cabinet for use indoors with a class-D head, I thought I would pay a visit - a rare thing (!) A weekday afternoon and quiet. Just me, Victor and a shop full of gear. He set up about five different combinations of heads and cabs ~ nothing too much trouble and left me to my own devices... absolutely no hard sell whatsoever. After about 30 minutes or so, I'd decided on a new Phil Jones 4x5. As Bash Bashers will testify, a ton of Bass for one small cab!! A very happy experience. I don't need much these days but would go again in the future.
11.
WT550 is an awesome amp. So much natural tone. Plug in and "wow", no tweaking needed. Maybe a touch on the Enhance control and that's it. Only problem is it's a bit heavy due to the awesome toroidal transformer in it.
And here she is Stuart! Still going strong... always loved the original 'David Eden' amps from way back...
12. Always first on my board is my OC-2 ~ after my tuner. next, the 'Flashback' delay by TC. I also like it because it does modulation with the delay turned off (2290 MOD pre-set) and finally, a looper because they're fun. I use the '360' by EXH ~ which comes with a knob you can turn to 11!
13. ... an update on the latest version of my pedalboard - with some new additions... More information on my web pages: - http://infinitybass.com/gear/pedalboard/
14.
my word, this thread has been brought back from the dead!!! but I'll play... this is my board, and it has been the same for about 18 months, since the current band really got going, which much be a record! I'd love to try a harmony pedal or octave up but other than that, for the current band, I'm really happy with this setup (I should be, I've tried enough pedals to reach this point!) I still use a stupid amount of pedals when I'm in the studio, but for live I've always liked keeping it simple, relatively speaking. So to answer the question posed 9 years ago, I reckon I have close to my ideal setup, for live. Though generally, there are always more pedals to buy / try!!
:hi:Sorry Gaz ~ my fault for bringing this thread back again .. Your 'mini' board inspires the minimalist in me! It always seems to have just enough on it, and I get annoyed when I can't stop beyond 4+tuner ~ must try harder :+) Once upon a time, I had a HOF reverb (compact, not mini) to go with a 1st gen Alter Ego (since died), and moved it on to get something else................. I'm a big fan of #eqd and the Dispatch Master, but I can't look beyond the Flashback for delay+modulation. I'm thinking of space saving mini size reverb ? there's one or two about ! Merry Christmas.
15. mine: tuner OC-2 } fill in this bit with loads of lovely Earthquaker devices.... TC flashback delay reverb - maybe? TC Nova Dynamics looper (EHX 360 - one knob goes all the way to '11').
16. Yes - ovnilab.com should be the 1st place to go for most things compressor related. I bought a TC Nova Dynamics (pre-loved) about five years ago and I haven't found anything better - yet. It's not compact size though - but has decent metering. Oddly for some, I have it positioned towards the end of my chain because I like it to control my overall level, rather than 'squash' it at the front end. This year, I've tried the Hypergravity - which I REALLY wanted to like, but struggled to get my sound out of it. And, the Keeley Bassist (which was only OK and expensive!) The Nova Dynamics is still on my board.
17. I voted Octaver (BOSS OC-2) and Delay (TC Flashback). Also quite into Tremolo/Reverb on Bass these days - it was a close call..
18. Me too It's got the -1 and -2 sub octaves (as well as the +1) ~ which I'm not so interested in. I've always had an OC-2 on my board - so let's see....
19.

Nice board! How are you finding the MXR Deluxe? ~ It's quite different in tone to the OC-2. I decided I didn't like it as much as the OC-2, and moved it on...
20. I slapped alot when I was younger, and now that I'm older... oh, never mind! It's a personal thing, but I tend to use lighter gauge strings (90 or 95 on the low 'E') for a more percussive sound, and a mid range EQ cut - to taste. I'm not a big fan of the 'squashed' type of compression on the front end, but have a compressor at the end of my signal path for overall 'limiting' - more transparent.
21. This is the Bass I will never part with... my Jaydee Supernatural Series 2 ~ 34" scale Bass from 1986. I'm short at 5'8" (with small hands) and it shouldn't suit me, but it is so comfortable to play! I Love the Volcano Red colour and it has epic tone/sustain. My youngest son will inherit her in my will.
22. My understanding is that vibrato was probably one of the first 'effects', along with reverb (obviously). Up until recently, I hadn't considered Tremolo as a useable effect on Bass! Ah, the perils of owning a multi-effect unit... More here: - http://www.premierguitar.com/articles/19777-a-brief-history-of-tremolo
23.
Mmm, wonder what I'd buy after getting that £2.5k back!
I'm lucky to have some good Basses, so the 'bic won't be missed. I would like to try an inexpensive 5-string, with a high 'C', to play Solo parts on some song's I'm recording. What would you spend it on?
24.
Just out of interest mate, I'm wondering why you haven't sold it on?
It's been up for sale on Basschat a couple of times in the past (for around £2.5k) but no serious interest, or any offers. I don't want to ship abroad either.
