1. Hello Mike, You've done the right thing: a) picked up a Bass and B ) joined the BC forum!! I can also point you in the direction of Thomas Rissell a.k.a 'MarloweDK' - lots of good stuff for beginners to advanced here: - http://playbassnow.com/ Good luck!
2.
Who fills you with tone envy? Mark King (from around 1990 to 1994). and what gear did they use? THAT Alembic Bass, Trace Elliot valve pre-amps and Mesa Boogie amps. Did you ever spend a fortune trying to emulate it? Yes, about 4K Did you get close? No where near - a bad workman blames his tools! But my Alembic Signature is the worst sounding Bass I've owned, ever
3. Hello! Just a heads up on a really great item: the TC Electronic NDY-1 Dual-Compressor / Noise Gate......... It's not mine - but I've had mine for years' and it's a keeper.. also has the gain reduction meters like the MXR compressor. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/T-C-Electronic-Nova-Dynamics-NDY-1-Dual-Compressor-Noise-Gate-Pedal-/291300019451?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item43d2d58cfb The auction finishes on Sunday, 23 Nov, 2014 21:06:11 GMT Free Economy Delivery | Item location: Teddington, Middlesex, United Kingdom Posts to: United Kingdom
4.
To compress or not to compress, That is the question, Whether tis nobler in the mind to suffer the peaks and spikes of outrages signals, Or to place a compression circuit on a sea of phat bass. And by opposing, reduce them, to smooth them, to die, to sleep, Well that's enough of that! I've always used a compressor, however recently due to events beyond my control I've been going about my business without one and I'm quite liking the "uncompressed" sound I'm hearing, so I thought I'd get some thoughts on whether fellow basschatters compress, and if so, what are you using?
I'm rather attached to my Nova Dynamics Compressor/noise gate by TC Electronic - discontinued - but you can get them pre-loved at auction. It has a visual meter - so you can see what it's doing - and doesn't colour your tone - to my ears. Similar to the MXR wotsit (horribly overpriced IMHO). I use it mostly for recording, but see no reason why I wouldn't use it 'Live'. Also, I have it at the end of my effects chain to smooth? overall levels - nice!
5. Hello Rick - It depends how much you have to spend my friend.. I can personally recommend TC electronic (I'm not an endorsee - just been using their pedals for a while, and all good). The 'Hall of Fame' (Reverb) and 'Alter Ego' (Delay) do it for me. The BOSS DD-6 get's quite a bit of love on here.. have fun!
6.
All updated http://simonpoulton.tumblr.com/ Simon, yours are August 1993 & December 1994 if you're interested. Si
Hey Si! Thanks for the update.. that makes sense. The OC-2 was my first 'proper' pedal, and I bought 'DF' new in my local music shop for £69. It must have been the autumn of 1993! Happy days.. Also, my powers of analysis have detected that the list is one (?) example short of the full set - only missing a serial starting with 'G' from 1997-ish. I wonder who has it? I think you should be told!
7. Welcome to Basschat Charlie! I must admit that although I am based in London during the week, I haven't been up to the shop for many years' - will have to put that right soon. It would be good to see Martin also, as he's set up a couple of my Jaydee's over the years'.............. Good luck to you & 'The Gallery'
8.
Hi guys, Thought I'd give this its own thread instead of high-jacking Wooks' thread below. Some of you might have already seen me put this about on Twitter etc. First of all, why just the Boss OC-2? Well simply because I love the thing , my 7 pedals form the initial list. How would you fancy helping to compile a list of serials and dates (theres a decoder on the Boss Area site, although happy to do that for you from your serial number). Please add your serial numbers with date, name and location to this thread, or find me on twitter (@simonrpoulton). Similaly, if you know anyone on Twitter that might be able to contribute, please spread the word with #OC2Database Please find the database here for more info: http://simonpoulton.tumblr.com/ Please note that this is nothing more than a labour of love, if you check the rest of my blog you'll notice plenty of bass player interviews, pedal talk, with my Twitter largely being the same. Many thanks Si
Hi Simon I love my OC-2 so much, I recently acquired it a play-mate (so to speak).. and here they are together.. Their serial numbers are: - 'DF30347' and 'EG91830' (both made in Taiwan). Thanks for the thread! Simon.
9. IMHO.. the best Octaver sound won't be found on either a multi-effect or a single pedal (although the BOSS OC-2 is very good - I even have a spare for back-up). I digress. The best Octaver is a Toneprint by TC Electronic, but you can only access them if you buy one of their Toneprint enabled amp heads.. Tc have declined to make a single pedal thus far - for possibly that reason #cynic I've owned a few multi effects over the years' and found them too noisy, even in the effects loop.. My current one is the Nova system - bought 2nd hand and it's hardly used.. prefer single pedals.. my OC-2 and Alter Ego (flashback) delay. All the best.
10.
.....I've got an office job, and on a computer all day (emails / spreadsheets - living the dream) I've got tendonitious in both wrists. Family to support, so bass playing takes a back seat. Warwick's and rig for sale soon in the For Sale Section.
... So sad to hear, But... If you don't NEED to sell your gear.. then DON'T!! Take a break (for however long is necessary - even If it's 2/5/10 years) ... sort the work stuff/DSE and ease yourself back in.. Your know it makes sense.
11. ... best wishes to those who are going to see 'Level' on their latest tour. I won't be going this time around - and not wishing to be a bore - BUT.. If Mark King actually held a hand up to all the #levelheads and said, "real sorry guys for the right royal scr$w up with the 'Sirens' CD quality/mastering.." - "I'll make some more music and include a re-master of the #sirens EP", then I WOULD buy it.. and start going to gigs again...
12. Probably the most boring pedal board on BC - bar none! I quite like TC electronic.. and my OC-2.. http://infinitybass.com/pedalboard/
13. Thanks for coming back to me Tony! http://www.secondcitysoul.com/ Congratulations on a great site for your band - very well done. Just checked.. http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/soundcheck/ by 'Press75'. It has lot of promotion options for your music + social media links. Cheers! I'll keep this one in mind.
14. BC'ers A polite request. I am looking at creating my own webpages (I haven't decided on a host yet - maybe a UK one?) and intend to use 'Wordpress' - because I'm not that interested in learning how to code - I'm getting on a bit, and more interested in writing/playing Bass (?). I've had a Tumblr for a while with SoundCloud widgets, but I would like all my social media interests and own music to link back to, or stem from my bit of SEO optimised space on the web... There are tons of free 'themes', and paid for one's, but I would be interested in seeing what 'themes' other members have chosen - using 'Wordpress' please - and perhaps sharing their experiences; good, bad or indifferent. You don't have to, but if would be great if you could. please don't forget to paste your link! (no spam or anything other than your own domains please - the Mods are watching). Over to you! thanks Ps I could just Search... but then there would be no opportunity to share and link back to a thread on BC. MODS: If this topic has been 'done to death' before - I apologise - please delete. thank you
15. As the title suggests - looking at dipping my toe into making up my own pedal board patch cables. I've seen some kits for about £40 which will make up five patch cables (so not that cheap!). I've watched some videos on tube wotsit and it looks straightforward-ish. I guess there are some of you out there who are using them? Which one's did you go for, and what is your experience, good / bad / indifferent etc does it really improve your sound?? OR should I spend the £40 on a decent signal buffer/line driver.. OR both? OR none of the above - and just stick with 'regular' cables/plugs................................... thanks people!
16. Hello Iain and ditto "Welcome on board" etc.. lovely gear, Basses and quite a few BC-er's have or have owned Musicman Sterling Basses, and seem to like them. I would like to own one myself at some point, or something similar, maybe a Jaydee 'Anarchy' Bass...........? in a year or two..
17. Well! A very challenging (gotta think out of the box) theme this month, so well done to you all.. but, when it came down to voting, there was not even a short-list - a little bit unexpected... but a stand out winner for me vote Cheers!
18.
Glad to hear this area is a lively place! I honestly know nothing about music stuff out and about, watching or playing. I really have to get out and at least see some bands. I didn't mention what music I like - primarily blues rock, hard rock and heavy metal but I'll listen and play pretty darned much anything. ... I am very Essex having been born in Basildon, and have been the butt of many an Essex girl joke
:hi:Hi Anita - Welcome to BC Raised in Romford (and lived there for best part of 30-years), but now out west in Berkshire these days.. Just to say your Musicman Sterling is one heck of a decent Bass for starters! I am gassing for one myself.. so good luck - there is loads of good advice on the forum, not necessarily from me but have FUN not doing any gags about White Heels | Orgasms | Bags of Chips etc etc
19. 2014: Pedal board (update).. won a pre loved 'SGT Pepper' pedal board at auction and it arrived yesterday. The chain is (right to left): - Loop 1: OC2 > Auto Q | Loop 2: Shaker > Coroner > Vortex > Alter Ego > HOF | Output: Nova Dynamics > Polytune > Sonic Stomp | to amp.. ** the polytune IS in an illogical position, and when I can stop noodling for five-minutes, I will try and sort it out! ..and here it is again, but someone turned out the lights
20. My recommendation would be for the TC Nova Dynamics NDY-1. It has been discontinued for some time, but can be found on a popular four-letter auction site and on BC from time to time.. for around £100. Takes up two spaces on a board, but lots of control, metering (!) and also has a noise gate.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgLrNl2vWbI
I've personally looked at the Mxr m87 and Earthquaker the warden and love the two of them both (from playing experience). I would love to know peoples opinion on these two / others. Also anyone know where to get them cheaply
21. Hello Erni3ball!
I came here to kick ass and chew bubble gum and I am all out of kick ass.
23. .. just sharing an old photo (last years' vintage) of my long-scale Signature Series IV.. she doesn't get out much, but might have a noodle later! Simon Edward.
24. Hello Rob. Welcome to BC and back to Bass (you know it makes sense!). I've heard some good things about Music Man Ray4 'SUB' (£300) and 'Sterling' (£600) Basses, which sound similar to their expensive 'Stingray' cousins. If I had some spare cash, I would really like to try/buy one of these. There might also be some pre-loved one's lurking around in the BC For Sale forums.. good luck! Simon Edward.
25. Hello Danny. Have a look at what toys and kit your favourite bands/players use - and you won't go far wrong.. good luck Simon Edward.
