1. Saturday bump up! (I've owned both and they are brilliant. Did you know, if you set the flashback to 'MOD' and turn the delay down/off, you get a use able Chorus sound?)
2. My Alembic long scale signature standard four-string. An impulse purchase 16-years ago. Too big for me + overly complicated eq + no Oooomph! Never played and never gigged.
3. OK. This is my Jaydee GA24 Active long scale fret-less bass (which originally started life as fretted), and had a new lined board fitted before I owned her. The pick up's are also not original.
4. Is the position of bassist secure in the future of contemporary music? Yes, because.. for the majority of music genres, with the exception perhaps of 'grime' (?) there is an increasing emphasis/focus on Live performance as a spectacle. There always has been (of course) but even more so now because the bottom has fallen out of selling recorded media. A modern day consequence of the way we consume music. In other words, you ain't going to make any serious money in the music business unless you have some kind of tour, huge venue or on-line contract to hang it off. And even these come with huge overheads and narrow margins. Would I pay £20, £30 or £40 + to watch a DJ play their 'set' ? Actually, I have seen large crowds on-line at these events - and I can only presume they are there to see a 'Live' band, or a vocalist bump n grind to a backing track. I think they're mad, but whatever floats your boat. Over the next 10 years or so, I'll be interested to hear and see who my kids end up; a) becoming fans of; if they go and see them play Live shows; c) they have a Bassist in the line up? The term "Bassist" is also crucial in the context of the question. Without something adding the Bass part, the composition may have heart ~ but will have no soul.
5.
Two of the guys who worked there, started PMT. (Simon and Terry)
... and don't forget Trevor! how could you forget Trevor? (someone will start a 'Monkey Biz' thread in a minute.. then again ~ maybe not).
6.
I take it monkey business is long gone.
Monkey Biz is long gone.. I think they went bust in the late 90's or early noughties? The last time I drove past, the premises had become an independent bathroom fitters / DIY shop.
7. Longest: almost 25-years for my Jaydee Series 2; Shortest: Westone Thunder ~ less than two months.
8. G# on the top string. Up high, I like to hit either a low open or fretted E to go with it... niiiiiiiiiiiiice
9. Oh, good luck!! I lived there for 30 years, and my family are still there or thereabouts. In the town itself, the brewery is long gone, and has been replaced with another shopping centre.. um, called 'The Brewery'. Clever. Likewise, some of the pubs went with it, and were replaced with the regular pub chains you get every where else. I'd be hard pressed to name a decent Live music venue. However, there is a rehearsal space about 15/20 minutes drive in nearby Upminster for about 10 quid an hour: - http://www.thefarmstudios.co.uk/Rehearsing.html .. and yes, do go to the dAwGs ~ it's a good night out and loads more life in it than the Swindon track near me. Mind you don't trip over all the white hand bags!
10.
I would probably pick the Trace Elliot. Don't sell either of them. What if one of them breaks? I mean, I own a Trace Elliot V6 and a Mesa Walkabout and M6 Carbine, so I have a similar conundrum, but only the one all tube/valve amp. I only need one but I will be keeping all three.
+1. I have the TE GP12XV preamp (Hexa front end) and a David Eden WT head - with a tube front end. Don't sell either if you don't want to or need to. You know what will happen if you let one of them go ....
11. So what's your heaviest bass that gets played? This is the heaviest Bass I own. Weight: 5.35 kg or 11lb 12 oz. It is hardly ever played. Do you gig with it? No - it's never been gigged, ever. What about it still makes you want it? I've tried selling it on Basschat a couple of times, but no takers - plenty of admirers though.
12. 4 x four-string fretted and a four-string fret-less. I owned a Hohner B2A V (five-string) once, but never got on with the low B...
13.
I've known band members using weird showbiz names because they were claiming benefits... like Dave Spangle (I made that one up to protect the guilty). For myself, I prefer to remain anonymous in the public domain, and my brother cyber-stalks me. If he's reading this... I'm not the same Steve J
I'm in absolute FLOODS !!! PMSL
14. My three votes duly cast.. I'm afraid I couldn't vote for anything that didn't have an obvious connection to the picture/ theme - no matter how good the Bass-ing
15. I think it might be a 2U rack bag by Studiospares (?) >> https://www.studiospares.com/Accessories/Bags-Rack-and-Other/Rack-Bag-2U-19inch_404770.htm Obviously, you don't have to mount it. £44 approximately.
16. Nope, not the name of mine or some one else's record (as far as I know) How do we feel when our Bass suffers (?) a "Ding" or scratch or something else happens to it? Is is worse when we don't realise how it happened, or who dunnit (!) and it took a while to notice..? Or we just accept it as part and parcel of owning a Bass, and tell ourselves it looks 'road worn' ETC Has it ever made you think twice about selling a Bass? or tried a DIY job with undesired consequences! I already knew about one of my "Dings" ~ on the front face too But there are two others which have been acquired (at some point); found when I was re-stringing and cleaning today: - ("Ding" one) ("Dings" two and three).
17. Updates on My Content >> View New Content >> then work my way down the forum list.. one day I might switch my laptop off and actually play some Bass!
18. Thanks for the thread. I arrived late to the 'Tremolo on Bass' party... but it's become an integral part of my sound (and pedal board). For starters, and as a budget option, I might try the JF-09 by JOYO which cost around £30. They are compact size and also go by the name of 'Harley Benton' and this: - 'ammoon'. As far as I know, they are the same circuit. I haven't owned a TR-02 ~ but I don't like the reviews it gets, and at £90 it's not that cheap! (I do like the new Pipeline by TC though...) Another trem that doesn't come cheap is the Earthquaker Devices Night Wire: - here's my review on Bass (with sound clips): - https://infinitybass.com/reviews/night-wire-tremolo-review/
19.
Okay. Does that have built-in features for bands, like a gig calendar etc? I couldn't see any mention of it on the site. Self-hosted, definitely. I've already got my domain registered and hosting lined up. I've set up a dozen or so WordPress installations in the past, so I'm perfectly comfortable with self-hosting. S.P.
The 'Tracks' theme is very basic.. just an audio and video player - and you might not be able to customise them (add a logo) etc. Probably not for you. Simon.
20. You're welcome! I use a free Wordpress theme called "Tracks" by Compete Themes: - https://www.competethemes.com/tracks/ I also used "Catch Box" (by Catch Themes) for a while, because I liked having a right side bar for widgets. It's good but I changed because "Tracks" looks more up-to-date. Have you decided whether to go Wordpress .com or .org ? You might want to read this before you chose: - https://www.wp101.com/wordpress-org-versus-wordpress-com/ All the best, Simon.
21. Hello to another Berkshire Bassist I'm a current Wordpress user and have had my website for 3 years. I love Free stuff (I'm on a very small monthly budget for hosting) and won't pay for so-called 'premium' themes or plugins because IMHO they're not really worth either a one-off or monthly charge for the 'extra' features. If you use a particular theme, designed for Musicians, Bands, DJ's etc, then some of the advanced features you are looking for are already provided. Google is pretty hot on websites being 'responsive' for mobile users, so there's that to think about. Have a look at this example list for starters: - https://www.freshdesignweb.com/music-wordpress-themes/ I could post a list of essential plugins I use on my site (security, optimisation etc) but I don't think that's the point of this thread and you may have that covered. Best wishes,
22.
In your position I'd probably focus on mixing with headphones (Sonarworks have a plug-on for those too!) and then do final tweaks through monitors, mindful that the room might be playing some tricks on my ears. That was my approach at our old address and it worked fine. Many would shoot me down for saying this, but I think a good room only accounts for say the last 10% of any mix, maybe less. I still spend the majority of my mix time using Apple earbuds on a laptop, but that's just my workflow and might not be suitable for everyone.
Don't shoot! Don't shoot!! This ^^^ 1,000,000 per cent.
23. Thanks for the thread. Here's my blurb ... I'm not a full-time musician and barely get time to play ~ let alone write, but I've been putting together a small run (nay limited edition!!) 6-track EP... forever. I'm long beyond the fame & fortune stage, and will probably 'give it away' for pay-what-you-want Or a small £ donation. i) how you went about pulling together your website (did you do it yourselves, or get a mate or someone else with expertise to set it up? I wanted to learn how to do everything myself ~ personal development thing. I tried Tumblr first which is a free platform - drag & drop. I'm a geek for stats (who, what, when, where) which are quite important - up to to a point. I found that the sites don't generally index well on any of the major search engines. I wouldn't use Tumblr as a main website, but as part of a social media promotion strategy, it could be useful. ii) what web hosting (e.g. GoDaddy) and platform you're using (e.g WordPress, Wix)? After a while, I decided to go down the Wordpress route with a budget of £5 a month for hosting. Web domains are extra and I don't have to worry about band width - Pfftt! :+) I chose Freshsites https://freshsites.co.uk/ because they were local to me. They've been good whenever I've needed any support, with fix times for tickets of a few hours - not days. I can't recall a time when my website has been down, because of a server issue or anything. I've been with them for 3 years, and don't feel like changing at the moment. iii) if having a website has made much of difference or none, or whether most of your gigs come via word of mouth etc ... Hmm. It's complicated... 'Authenticity' is a word I come across a lot these days, and having your own website is a good base to tell your 'story' and link to/from. My website generates around 5-6,000 page views a YEAR, which is extremely small beer. And it's hard work getting that much. (Anyhow, I don't write for the 'views'). To finish, If you don't want to do it all yourself then Bandcamp might be the route for you? Seriously. I'm a HUGE fan. Good luck every one !!
24. Not sure I've shared a pic of my Jaydee Custom 'Infinity' 4 on this thread... ? https://infinitybass.com/gear/basses/
25. Reaper DAW was recommended to me by Basschat members back in 2014 ... and I made the move up (?) from tape based 8-track. I paid for a license from version 4, and never looked back; I wrote a post on my blog about why I Love Reaper, which I thought I'd share >> https://infinitybass.com/why-i-love-reaper-daw/ All the best, Simon
