1. Oh, go on then! It's about time - and in truth - it's not too far to go. I'll bring a JD, BH-250 and a Phil Jones “Piranha” Compact 4. Looking forward to it...
 2.
Here ya go simonedward-
Thank you ! you've made a seismic shift to a board double the size (and a couple of brands ) over the years'.. I've a lot of time for both MXR and EHX, and have owned a couple of their pedals (Octave deluxe, auto Q and the Analogizer), but.. they just don't 'work' with my combination of Basses, pre's and amps. And that's the real trick with this pedals and effects thing, spending the time, energy and the £££ to find out what 'works' well with what - and sounds good to you.
 3.
Blimey! My boards changed a fair bit since then!!!
A polite request for a reminder of what your current set up looks like please..
 4.
.. In any case, it's not necessarily the sound of the bass on those recordings that is important - it's the way in which the bass was played, the sheer ingenuity and creativity and innovation of some of the early bass pioneers is absolutely breathtaking.
I'll see you right there. It is how we play something, and what we create and if someone else think it's innovative and stands out - perhaps. OK. The title of this thread is a nonsense and 'F' Basses are not 'rubbish', but.. when I'm parting with my £££, the sound of a Bass IS important to me. It's so important to me, I bought an Alembic - what was I thinking!?!?
 5.
I don't know what the fuss is about. All basses sound the same anyway.
Nope. Don't like the sound of my Alembic, but love my JD's sound (which it 'emulates'?? B** S***). My MM Sterling sounds different to both of these.
 6. Fenders are like Marmite I've never been tempted to own one, but I've heard them on records and always thought.. meh and?.. so what?? 'Everybody' has them, and everyone sounds similar. Solid but 'safe' and not very inspiring. When my wife sees a band on TV playing a festival or a show, she nearly always asks me.. "Is it a Fender Bass?" (and laughs - because she knows I'm not crazy about them) and 9 times out of 10 it will either be a 'P' or a 'J'. I don't HATE them - and they have their place.. just nowhere near my rig thanks.
 7. .."An amp for practise and recording". I don't gig and probably never will either! There maybe another way.......................? How about this:- A preamp (with/without an effects send/return) and a Hi-fi amp for monitoring. Even at half-way, my NAD amp is plenty 'loud' through speakers/headphones. The preamp doesen't have to be in a rack, the Eden Bass Preamp Pedal is great & under 100 quid.
 8.
ok guys, so the old has passed, and i'm surpriseed no-one has popped this little gem of a thread up yet. So, with your permission, can we start again?
LOVE this thread !! 5,676 replies; 904,452 views .. keep sharing all of your great pedals & effects (and boards) to take it up to the 1 MILLION views
 9. Appreciate your suggestions! Thank you The Digitech timebender is interesting >> http://iheartguitarblog.com/2009/07/review-digitech-timebender-delay.html#sthash.sZd0l9uh.dpbs ..and has a ton of features, but it's beyond my budget for *new* and way too big. I forgot to mention I've been trying to downsize the number of pedals I own, and my main board to either a Nano+ or the Warwick rockboard 'jam'. I'm trying to think of a reason why I wouldn't buy the DD-7, and it's because it looks like 'innovative' BOSS updating the DD-6 to match some of the features on the TC 'Flashback' (itself a compact TC Nova Delay). This is partly why I went for the Alter Ego in 2013 - the presets, and you have access to the toneprints.
I hear what you say, but the Flashback is VERY hard to beat ...
How about Earthquaker devices dispatch master? (digital, no modulation but has reverb - I have a TC Corona) Or the Earthquaker disaster transport (analog voiced digital delay) and a TC HOF mini.. heard some very good things. A nice headache!
 10.
I've had a few Status basses both with full graphite, and wood with graphite inserts. Fabulous clarity with the full graphite but my preference given the choice is wood with graphite rods. Still great stability but just sound a little less hi-fi. I'll always regret selling my Roscoe Beck V for that reason. Best bass I never kept
This ^ .. all the way! My latest Jaydee from 2000!, albeit with a walnut & maple thru-neck, has graphite rods - and never had to adjust it - great tone etc. Still have an '86 Series II JD with a truss rod though (and touch wood - no pun intended) no problems. Just my humble opinion, but I've never liked the sound of MK's status basses (how much eq does he have on them?). You may as well have a synth playing the lines... oh, um.................. Horses for courses.
 11. Hello all - I know I only ever post when I need help.. (no, not that kind of help).. But, My TC/Pro Guitar shop Alter Ego delay pedal has packed up - no power - have tried everything, even a battery! http://www.tcelectronic.com/alter-ego-delay/ I got it 2nd hand about two years ago, and it's probably not worth the hassle or expense of getting it repaired. TBH I'm a bit sad (yeah I know), but I'm annoyed that it hasn't lasted - I've only used it to record at home. Ce la vie. I'm looking for your recommendations for my next delay pedal please. I like digital + modulation. Around £100-£150. I'm not looking at the 'Flashback' (good, but been there), or the Alter Ego 2 (no regency or mix controls), or the X4 (too big for me). Thank you
 12. Windows 8.1 > W.10 upgrade (Windows 7 skin) and so far, so good although it does put 'apps' on your machine willy nilly - without asking !! - using basic Toshiba 64-bit Celeron laptop 2Ghz with 4GB of RAM and Tascam US-322 USB interface. Drivers updated fine. Was running Reaper V4.7x for ages and downloaded the new V.5 on W.10 with no probs. (Just using Voxengo plugins for amps and reverb).
 13. Easy Tigers!! Excellent entries (again) this month.. but 3 stand out contenders for the prize! what prize?? Hehe *voted thrice
 14. From one Simon to another: Hello! ..and once you've sorted out your Bass+amp, you'll need some effects pedals
 15. Show us yer headstocks! Ok then...
 16.
Hypothetical situation here. You've been given £700 to spend on in pedals and pedals only. What would you get?
Oh, not very much! but.. even if the cash was just given to me (hypothetically), I would still search through the pre-loved markets first:- TC Polytune mini = £50-£60 BOSS OC-2 Octaver = £70-£90 TC Corona Chorus = £70-£90 Source Audio 'Vertigo' Tremolo = £150 - - - - > personal self indulgence Earthquaker Dispatch Master (Reverb/Delay) = £150 Eden WTDI World Tour DI/Preamp pedal = £100 ..some Haribo and one or two beers
 17. This!
Dark side??? surely you mean you've seen the light...
18. The answer to your original question ("Any Fans of Fuzz out there") is - 'Yes'. In fact you only have to go on the 'Post your pedal board - Basschat style!!' thread to see how many there are. Else, they only have Fuzz pedals on their boards because.. er, some of them look cool? Fuzz. Distortion. Whatever. Next...
 19. Bass is my 3rd instrument. I started playing violin at school (aged 7), and always liked playing piano, which I consider to be my other instrument. 1990. I was 17 years old. I wanted to play keyboard’s in a church youth group band that was forming. I started on the piano, but another guy was a better player, so I played bass lines on a synthesizer. I migrated to Bass guitar when I could afford to buy one. Absolutely no regrets and I’m loving the journey! Two weeks wages from my first job paid for my first Bass (an Aria Pro II) and a ‘Cobra 90′ combo by Carlsbro. The Aria had a high action, which made it difficult to play. I didn’t have much of an idea of what that was at the time. At first, I used light gauge round wound strings (30-50-70-90), so my fingers didn’t get too sore! The combination of strings, bridge pick-up and the amp produced a bright, punchy sound which I liked. The Carlsbro was not too heavy and fairly easy to carry around from place to place. It was noisy (plenty of hiss) and the 15″ speaker sounded a bit boomy to my ears – but did the job. I remember the knobs were quite small and flimsy. They would fall off or break on a regular basis. Many players keep the first Bass and amp they play, but I don’t remember being particularly sentimental about either the Bass or amp, and they were moved on after a couple of years’.... 20. Good post & review! This.
... The finish is generally good, a few sprouting fret edges, but not worrisome. Smooth VERY playable neck and board. Good action that looks usefully adjustable, although once I'd replaced the stock strings with a new set the action was looking good anyway, with no need for adjustment. So I think it's generally a well set up instrument, no horrors or bendy boards etc. I wouldn't profess to be an expert, but the hardware seems okay, sturdy tuners, kept tune, an EBMM imitation bridge that lacks chunk, but does the job. So the sound. I read lots of posts about the preamp being grossly overdriven. That wasn't my experience. The rig in the rehearsal room is a bog standard Laney into a 4X10. Set flat on the EQ, gain at 12 noon, volume at 12 noon. The sounds I preferred most on the bass controls was a tweak past centre dent on bass, and for treble, a small tweak below the centre dent, (the highs were quite shrill). The bass was perfectly audible and sounded fine in the mix. Yes, the E is a whopper and sounds angry and growls. It's not very subtle, but I think that was my overall feeling with this bass/preamp, ie. I've owned two USA Stingrays previously, and they both had more breadth and nuance within their signature sound. To my ears a Stingray is a tight compressed mid driven growl machine, but on my previous two there was also a richer more welcoming bottom end. This bass seemed to lack that - ie. it's tight, punchy as hell, growly, but no saturated warmth to see out the lower notes. Indicative of course of the price bracket it is manufactured within. It sounds like a Stingray in a cosmetic way I think - that's the best way I personally would describe it ... Is it worth the price? (I've seen prices vary around £280 ish to £299). I'd say yes in that for this price you get a well constructed bass that has the presence to survive a gig. The tone of that presence, is, as I've alluded to, dependent as always, on taste. It's certainly a bass worthy of modding, not to tame the preamp, but that a John East or something similar might broaden the sound somehow and reduce its almost TOO tight raspiness.
Also of note, is the fact that the pick-ups are MUCH quieter than the 2010 models. Apparently they changed them and re-voiced them to be quieter, and it worked. No more annoying buzz! This is my tobacco sunburst 'Ray 34' (2011 model): -
 21. I think of me as a musician - with a day job. A little pretentious - perhaps but I know (low down) I'm an enthusiastic amateur. This.
When I started, I never for a moment thought I would still be playing now that I am in my 40's. Basically, I never actually bothered to LEARN the bass. I picked up and tinkered to the extent that I taught myself shapes and patterns. I taught myself to play via muscle memory, which is exactly the same method I use today. I probably should feel an element of shame in that comment, but I can assure you I certainly do not lose sleep over it... It's a hobby for me, one I thoroughly enjoy granted, but one where I know, accept and am content about my abilities and limitations.
And this.
All sorts. It is like any pyramid of ability. More people at the bottom, fewer at the top and a gradient in between. There are absolute ('I have had a bass three weeks; which end do I blow into') beginners through to major pros. The level of playing is equally varied. The art is to understand who has the most sensible and mature answers to any questions. Remember, good teachers are not necessarily great players and great players are not necessarily good teachers. What you get here is a wide variety of opinions and abilities and, by trawling through each thread, you get a concensus. It is always interesting to hear what people on here are doing but it is also important to recognise when what you are seeing is someone's party piece not their basic level of competence. In truth, there are plenty of people on here who are better than most of us and plenty who are worse. It doesn't matter.
This is me > http://infinitybass.com/faq/
 22. Hello & apologies for barging in on your thread.. As the other guy's have said, 'No hard and fast rules' (when it comes to effects), but the basic chain in the diagram has served me quite well over the last 25 years. Always had issues with 'compression', but once you've decided what you want to do with it (compressor as a squash-like volume-ising effect or as a volume-even-ing out 'limiter'), then it makes sense. I use a compressor for recording, so I have mine at the end. Have fun!

 24. Aside from the original 'Star Wars IV' score, I've gone for this (slightly obscure) soundtrack from 1968 for the WWII film 'Where Eagles Dare': Composed and Conducted by Ron Goodwin: - run time 14:56; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0ZTTeTr-YQ
 25. My current board and case is the 'Showman' by Diago UK. There is no chain as such as there are separate isolated feeds from each pedal into the Octaswitch 2 (by Carl Martin). You can make up your own patches by cutting in the sounds you need with the micro dip switches. The pedal order is:- TC Electronic Polytune Noir, BOSS OC-2 (Octaver), Nova Modulator (NM-1), Alter ego (Delay), HOF (Reverb) and Nova Dynamics (compressor). It's all powered up with a 'Pro Power' by Carl Martin, which I would recommend to anyone. A few other boards used over the last 20+ years can be found here:- http://infinitybass.com/pedalboard/
