Both are good, but I perferred (& bought) a lovely apline-white epiphone one, but probably because of the more fender-like construction. I'm not a big fan of set-necks as it limits the setting up low action to how low the saddles can go.

I built a fretless precision bitzer using a sunburst alder Brandoni body & quartersawn maple neck with unlined ebony board. It was easy to put together and all the bits were within your budget. Although the resale value is probably next to nothing, I think it is easily as good as something a lot more expensive.

I doubt its a '78 this as I have a cherry sunburst precision like that (bought new in '82 and weighs a ton) and they were only made in '81 & '82 in that colour. The serial number probably suggests '78, but a lot of S8 & S9 serial numbers ended up on basses as late as '81. If there's a date scribbled on the end of the neck I bet it'll indicate that its an '81. A modern Fender US pickguard should fit, but you'll need to drill the extra holes for the pickup cover using the original as a template. I agree, a new socket should cure it. Best to get a switchcraft one if they make one that's suitable for your bass. Surprised its happened on a USA fender though - I've had this issue with inexpensive basses with cheapo hardware, but not a US fender.

I quite fancy building a mcMeat - a DIY clone of the LoveTone meatball.

I depends what you want to use it for. As an example I use a Behringer BLE100 bass limiter/enhancer and since I got my first one (which was £20 new) I am no longer seeking my perfect compressor. For a long time I thought I wanted a compressor to even out my volume, and tried every one I could get my hands on and even bought a few, but all along it turns out that this cheap little limiter pedal is exactly the right tool for the job I need it to do, ie to even out my fingerstyle playing so I can play with a light touch and let the amp do all the hard work without getting massive peaks in the sound when I do hit a bit harder. I now have two BLE100s as I scored a spare one on ebay a few days ago for £9 including delivery. I think the original owner may have been disappointed that he couldn't hear what it was doing, but the transparency is one the main things I like about it - it doesn't make the bass sound 'squashed' like some compressors do.

Sometimes o5b have so long between rehearsals &/or gigs that often when we do play together it does seem like a reunion.

When playing it was remarkably comfortable. It didn't feel like it was trying to push forwards at all & was certainly a great improvement over holding the neck up with the left hand.

Epiphone thunderbird - cured by moving the front strap button to the neck heel Daughter's daisy rock heartbreaker (now sold) was even worse for neck dive though - added a strap button to the bottom horn (or should that be bottom bulge) and it balanced beautifully, although looked a bit odd at first. What's this kit of parts? a strap button & a screw?

reminds me of an Ashbory - where some people put polyurethane strings on them to replace the silicone rubber ones

Sorry - it could be just the pic, but to me it looks like your friend was sick on it I have no idea what a gay scratchplate looks like though as I didn't realise that scratchplates had a preference.

Just like the kit I bought but with an extra pot. I can't tell whether those pots have solid shaft or knurled split shaft - make sure you buy the correct ones to go with whichever knobs you're using - I think (but not 100%) that CTS make both types. I got solid shaft pots & put a set of 1960s mustang knobs on my bass. They were a bit pist on the stock split shaft pots. Make sure you have some decent solder so you don't have to overheat the pots- ie not the lead-free rubbish from Maplins which doesn't flow.

I'm lucky enough to have found my perfect bass: a cheap & cheerful CIJ Fender mustang. I've had it over a year and not felt the need to buy any more basses since.

There are a few ebay sellers and mail order places that do a kit of parts for a wiring harness. I used a P bass wiring kit from [url="http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/Storehouse-Studio__W0QQ_armrsZ1"]storehouse studio[/url] on ebay to upgrade the cheap & cheerful bits in my CIJ mustang, ie two CTS pots, sprague orange drop capacitor, switchcraft jack socket & cloth-covered wire. You can get cheaper pots than CTS & cheaper sockets than Switchcraft, but its worth spending the extra few quid to get the best.

I'm very happy with my schroeder 1212L with LMII.

It looks blummin' brilliant with it on, so I vote keep it. My Precisions & my Highway 1 Jazz have one, plus the jazz has a badass. However I only play fingerstyle and have no interest in slapping, picking, hitting the bass with kippers, or any other righthand technique so it suits my 'jamerson-inspired' style to rest my hand on the cover. Saying that, my no1 live bass, a mustang would look odd with one so I have to make do without.
