  1. The reissues didn't all have stacked knobs IIRC I have seen both online but they may have been converted from stack knobs. The Jap ones were VVT
  2. Sorry guys it could be a 62 USA vintage reissue from about 1985. The only way to date it is to remove the neck. The 'V' serial number started in 1982 Logo's were always applied over the lacquer on the vintage basses and so they do split, rub off. I think it's genuine. I've looked at a few on line and they all seem to have slightly different decals. I remember selling a brand new reissue strat in 1989 and it didn't look very good. The paint was orange peely and patchy. Brand new, we were fender dealers
  3. yes agreed, I play along with the guitar but I actually start it by myself (I copied the late bass player from the band as I had listened to him play it millions of times)
  4. I was thinking about trying to take my 'upright' Stagg eub. Rock band and double bass. It's gotta work, hasn't it. could I play it with a pick?
  5. by the way starts up high. playing f on the d string and its fifth on the g.
  6. So as you know, I'm in a Police tribute and I have collected basses like Sting used in The Police. I'm currently a bit bored with gigging and decided to use one of my Police basses with my normal pub band. We're called Live 'n' Kickin' and have been around just shy of 31 years. I normally play a Fender 'Flea' jazz in this band but last night decided to do the whole gig on my Fretless 'bitsa' What a great sound and work out for my playing. Songs that were a struggle, By the way by TRHCP as it starts with chords and the middle bit of Allright Now. But I had fun and nobody else really noticed. Now I need to think up something for the next gig.
  7. the money I have spent over the years, not yet worked out Current basses cost me about £11k Current guitars at about £8K To replace them? Difficult to know. My '73 P bass was £450 back in 1990 but I swapped some gear that I couldn't sell for it. I do have a couple of classics in my collection that are worth much more than I paid for them. My '83 Steinberger was £2K but it's almost immaculate but that's not worth much more than that now. I try and use everything now and again but my Aria SBR150 is a bit heavy for me these days If I added in my PA & Desk that's another £4K current bass amp & both cabs about £700 All tax deductible and quite a lot of fun, plus a handy nest egg for when I retire
  8. you need an original Steinberger.
  9. yep I'm with Dave on this one. Some you win........
  10. yep, great amps. The guitarist in the band I'm in, is none other than Martin Kidd, Cornford (and now Victory) designer. If you look inside the chassis it will be signed by the builder. It could be Martin, Chris, Len or the other guy (I've forgotten his name dammit)
  11. My Flea bass is from the first batch. I bought it in july 2016 and it has been my goto bass for everything (except my Police gigs). I love it GLWTS
  12. @Manton Customs I fear you're on a hiding to nothing here. Many people (IMO) overthink all this stuff. Some people think it's all to do with the pickups and electronics. I was at home playing my telecaster and my brother turned up. He picked up the tele, strummed a chord and said 'Ash'. I knew it was Ash. So did he, by the sound. A Maple board Strat is a more glassy sound than a r/wood board. It's true but some people will deny it has anything to do with the wood. Still, it was a great demo and I was wrong in my analysis but I haven't had an ebony boarded precision with an alder body to compare with my other P basses
  13. no I haven't read it but I'll put it on my list. Yes his dad died at about 45. Lung cancer. Very sad
  14. Recently been watching the 60s series Randall & Hopkirk (deceased) Jeff Randall (Mike Pratt) is Guy's dad!! It was one of my favourite shows as a kid (Sunday lunchtimes, early 70s)
  15. I decided to ignore the clicks and just moved around each section to try and work it out. I have always said that wood makes a difference in tone, some people can hear it and some can't. I have voted and wait to see the results.
  16. I must admit, I did look at the prices of pickups on the aguilar stand and was horrified. Then I saw someone on the stand coming towards me, so I ran away
  17. You might be right there. I use swing bass strings, I had a set of flats on a fretless (didn't really like the sound but I don't like the sound of rounds on it either.) and I have them on my hofner violin bass but whether I would try them on my main gigging basses, I just don't know.
  18. someone asked whether he uses them and he just laughed. He said only guitarists that own a bass would bother with flatwounds as they know nothing about bass. Something along those lines. He uses bass centre stadium elites, has done for years. It just made me laugh, there's so much love for flats these days (even I'm thinking about a set) but an old pro, just uses rounds and has no interest in changing. He just cracked me up
  19. Hi guys 2 tickets to the scala, London to see Mark King/ Stewart Copeland's band Gizmodrome. on Wednesday 7th I can't go due to work commitments £35 the pair Please PM
  20. yep that's the one. I thought it looked cool
