1. My kind of thread! http://youtu.be/EIhSnaqou0I Simple and fun to play, especially the chorus. Nice low Dflat for the 5 stringers too in the breakdown.
2.
Going for a jam with a guy next week and Under the Bridge is on the list of songs he'd like to do. I've always hated it with a passion. I remember listening to it once about 10 years ago and vowed to never listen to it again. But, being an adult, I decided I'd learn it for this jam and then make my excuses in the future. Gave it a quick spin and it was as I remembered and feared. The shrill, jangly guitar tone. The dull, atonal vocals. Four sections to the song, which are all very plain in their own right, just shoehorned together. Meandering, needlessly complex, and poorly constructed bass line which totally dominates the song rendering it almost unlistenable, and my god does it drag?! Feels like it goes on for 10 minutes! And the drumming! It's like the guitar, bass, and drums are each playing a different song! Dreadful song. No idea why it's so highly regarded. The only redeeming feature is Flea's tone, which is sick. So I've learnt it and I'll give it a run through, but hopefully it'll sound terrible and we'll never have to play it ever again.
Don't sit on the fence, how do you really feel about it?
3.
I quit two bands because I seemed to be the only one who was doing my "homework" and coming to the rehearsal prepared. The others seemed to think that rehearsals were for learning material as opposed to the whole band tweaking or fine tuning what they learned in order for the band to be a tight unit. I put up with this for a while, but eventually got fed up looking at/listening to people working out parts at rehearsals, that they should have done before hand.
This has always been the main reason why I have quit bands. It's infuriating.
4. This is one of my favourites to play - http://youtu.be/5ixRWvrkUHo I'm a sucker for a good disco bassline, I absolutely love this, it takes a bit to kick in. http://youtu.be/de4_vbntd50
5. I started a thread on this very topic a while back, it got some very interesting replies! You are right Blue, the bands I have quit I shouldn't have bothered with in the first place.
6. I really want this. Played a 424x at the weekend and it rocked. I'm sure it won't be around long at this price. Shame it's 3 weeks to payday!
7.
They were never in a band together...
A RhysP gem!
8.
The videos are a lot more polished now and I find them easy to watch. In one of his videos he talks about talent and shows some of his original video clips. Which are basically a web cam in his bedroom. Really, there are thousands of bedroom cam players and if you're going to get your video noticed above them you have to step out of the bedroom and engage your audience. We consume with our eyes and the presentation of the video is key. There's a balancw to be struck somewhere between a dodgy web cam bedroom player uming and ahing through a video, and someone talking a full camera unit to their Yoga session.
I wasn't having a go at him. I just preferred the old style. Times change and even Scott himself has redone an old video. I owe him a huge debt of gratitude for digging me out of a slump. West Yorkshire boy too so bonus points!
9. There are a few songs that I consider to be absolute perfection. This one is top of the list. I'm not a huge Fleetwood Mac fan but I think that this is an absolute masterclass in songwriting and performance. I've ripped the bass line in the chorus off so many times! 2nd in my list is Be My Baby by The Ronettes. http://youtu.be/6ul-cZyuYq4 Do you have a perfect song?
10. Scott Devine got me playing bass again after losing my enthusiasm for a good number of years. I preferred the old videos where he got straight to the point. I've no interest in seeing him in an apartment in New York or walking around.
11. I've always preferred playing as a 3 piece or with only one guitarist. It sounds bigger when done right. For me it made me listen more, I realised how much responsibility I had to hold it together as the link between the melody and the rhythm. As time goes on I play less fills.
12. Hello all Ideally I would like to trade this for a MIM Fender Jazz Bass, one of the newer models if possible. Excellent condition and a nice back friendly 8lbs in weight. The neck is great and the only flaws are a couple of small dents on the chamfer and slight scuffs on the bottom edge of the body - I have tried to photograph these. This is a fine example of the great basses produced in Mexico by Fender in recent years. I am selling because I have finally realised prefer Jazz basses in all honesty, my hands are more suited to the narrow necks. At least until Precisionitis strikes... £360 collected or I could meet within reasonable distance. I am in Wakefield, West Yorkshire close to J38-40 of the M1 and J25 of the M62.
13.
why is this still here looking at me with those tempting eyes? someone please take it away!!!
It's waiting for you! 😉
14. It's My Life by Talk Talk. One of my all time favourite basslines.
15. I expect to be paid the same. I'm doing a dep gig next week and have put a lot of work in to learning the songs so the gig goes well.
16. Another Peavey fan here. I've never played a bad one, or a light one. My mate had a JHS guitar combo, that was awful.
17. I've had a couple of VM jazz basses and they were exceptional. Currently I have a Squier Deluxe Dimension V that is one of the best basses I've played, one too many strings though it seems for me! I had a Squier Telecaster in the 90's that was amazing too.
18.
The first thing to watch is that most transcriptions of it are wrong. The version that was in Bassist magazine, for example, has so many errors it's almost worse than having nothing. It's a lot easier if your hands are in the right place...
The MarloweDK cover on YouTube sounds right to me. I used that to help me nail it.
19. I am a Fender fan but this is one price hike too far in my opinion. I played the new Jazz in Dawsons in Huddersfield. It was good, but not £1500 good. With so many excellent second hand Jazz deals around I don't ever see myself buying a new Fender again.
20. Dead Goon by Mr Bungle. That main line in the verses has been my nemesis bassline for nearly 25 years now. I can do it, but as soon as I step away from it for a while then it's gone. It was done on a fretless too, that would take me another 25 years to master.
21.
I'm not offended but it shows how much with work there is still to do it educating people about mental health issues.
I couldn't agree more.
