1. Never liked Duran Duran. However, I saw a video of them once, taken before they became a big name pop band. They were playing some kind of blues/rock stuff and wearing jeans, T shirts, and long hair. I could have liked them then, just goes to show what sh*t happens when you sell out to pop producers.
2. I never liked Adam Ant as a pop act, but I thought they were quite good on the Jools program. They were a lot more rocky, and I thought the guitarist was working hard.
3.
Focus estate.
Yes, I've got one. Estates or vans. Nothing with a lip that goes between the floorpan and the outside world at the back.
4. We were offered a gig but it conflicts with the social arrangements of some band members (!! FFS !!) so I've got naff all to do.
5. Gigbox = ex-army ammunition box, also a hard case originally made for 2U rackmount equipment
6. A fair bit of the material published about Camel Mk I suggests that Doug Ferguson was the weak link in the band, and indeed he's been on record as saying he felt better about being a double glazing salesman after leaving Camel, but IMO his bass lines really worked with the rest of the band and I liked what he played. That weak link stuff is being a bit harsh.
7. Perfect Interval = when the bandleader buys the drinks
8. Just finished in the pit for a run of Aladdin at the Stowmarket Regal. Thoroughly enjoyed it and the chances are I'll get asked back next time they need a pit band.
9. I'm a guitarist who can find his way around a bass. I enjoy bass, but it's physically demanding in a way that guitar isn't. I think I'll always be a guitarist first. I believe the electric bass is not just a guitar that plays in the bass register. Its function within a band is not that of a guitar, and I find I have to think differently when playing it. I learned because I wanted to record my own music, but have also played in one or two ensembles. I think its made me a better nusician.
10. It wasn't 'glam' but it was popular rock at the same time: Hawkwind's Silver Machine
11. I have a few VHS videos of Jimi: IoW, Berkley, Monterey, Band of Gypsies, and of course Woodstock. There's something to be learned from each. As far as tuning issues go, what do you expect if you string an instrument with a floating vibrato upside down and then give it serious abuse? Strats are hard enough to keep in tune even when you string them up the right way round, have them properly set up by your tech, and are gentle with them.
12. Would be nice if we'd had one. I'm getting pissed off with my band. 2 of them work shifts so its hard enough to get them together anyway without the other 2 insisting that rehearsals and gigs take lower precedence than their social lives. And because of that attitude we've sh*t out on crimble and NYE gigs. Anyone need a guitarist, or a guitarist who can find his way around an electric bass?
13.
Don't all companies attempt to take over the planet?
No. Some are happy to make adequate profit in their part of the market, without agressively trying to knock out any and every alternative trader, or sneakily getting other parties who are not readily identified with Tesco to buy up every available plot of land around towns & villages as well as up their high streets and take over the pub for a convenience store.
14. Guitarists are 2 a penny. If those 2 insisted on using inappropriate gear for the venue, you can easily replace them with others who have more common sense. I keep a pair of Marshall 4 x 12s and a variety of heads including a Mk I 100W SLP at home but haven't had the need to use them for some time (but I'd love to find the excuse). If the gig is big enough I'll take the Bluesbreaker combo, and if it isn't I'll take the AC30 (CC2X version, which has a master volume). Punters don't care whether the guitar sound comes from pedals, a rack of FX, or a huge stack.
15. The correct number of instruments to own is n+1 where n is the number currently owned.
16. I don't buy anything from Tesco unless I've tried all other likely sources AND the product is must-have. I don't wish to fund their attempts to take over the planet. Bastards
17. IMO there are various kinds of mistakes - forgetting the structure of the song and playing the wrong section at the wrong time or failing to play what you should - bum notes like playing one fret displaced from where you should be - badly articulated notes (either hand could be responsible for those) - playing something different to what you know you should have played, but the key and the timing were still compatible with what everyone else was doing - not having the correct sound or pickup selection (including having a vol pot rolled off when you switch to that pickup ... but the main things is, most of the time the audience are unaware of what you intended, or should have done.
18. Anyone want to start a Scrap Metal band?
19. just noticed this too, can't get at general discussion and off topic has vanished. the forum wasn't broken, so somebody didn't need to try fixing it.
20.
I'd quit tbh.
I wouldn't quit the band. Just the stage. I'd go for a beer while the rest of them played it.
21.
The two are not mutually exclusive . IME, rhythm is harder to read than pitch/notes but you can always find a recording to help you. Take in a couple of phrases by ear first and you've got the rhythm and feel of the piece, then read the dots and you've got the rest.
That's the other thing - I find pitch far easier to read than rhythm. But tab users have to refer to the dots to get the rhythm anyway so they've cracked over half of the problem. What's wrong with learning the last & easier bit?

23. some might say you don't need it, but even if you do find yourself not needing it, it won't do you any harm. proper notation tells you so much more than where to put your fingers. it tells you when, and explains the relationships between what you're playing now, what you played before, and what you're going to play after. you see music as patterns of rhythmic and melodic devices, and because it's easy to spot scale fragments and arpeggios when they're written down (and those are the basic manoeuvres you've practised - haven't you) you can just pull the relevant tricks out of the bag. Plus you can also access music that was written for other instruments. It's a universal language. Pianists don't read tab! In fact it always amazes me that guitarists and electric bass players seem to be the ones who refuse to do what students of all other instruments do (in the west, anyway) which is learn to read as they learn to play.
24.
Don't you try to out-wierd me. I get stranger things than you free with my breakfast cereal
(Zaphod Beeblebrox, to insect-type creature in the foyer of the Hitch Hiker's Guide office block).
25.
Good Lord, what great outfits in the previous posts! It's fun playing with those things. No need whatsoever to wear suits and ties 'n' stuff. You're in function bands all of you, right?
We had a dress code - the singers can wear something colourful but the rest of us go black. I can do black vest, black sleeveless T shirt, black T shirt, black polo shirt, black short sleeved shirt with a collar, black long sleeved shirt without a collar (grandad style) but I'll roll the sleeves up, black jumpers of varying weights if necessary - varying levels of "smartness" depending on what's acceptable - likewise varying kinds of black jeans/trousers but I don't do suits and I don't do ties.
