2.
Add to that 'learn the words'!!! Our singer still has the words on a bit of paper which he gets out of his pocket and looks at in not so subtle manner! :-0
Our singer has them on his laptop which he puts on a stand. Hanging from the laptop is a thing with the band's logo on it. Not as good as memorising words, but done the way it is, it doesn't look too bad, and we can look over his shoulder to find out whether there's another verse coming up, or the middle, or a guitar solo ...
3. It's always been difficult. Finding the people with the skiils, the time, the interest, the availability.
4.
[sup]So effing loud - both of them , weren't happy at all . One 4x12 is really overkill in a small pub , but two (4 in all) , is just ..... Haven't got a clue these guys - I despair sometimes . Got ringing in my ears as I write this , and that's with plugs . Punter's ears must've been mashed . Thankfully just a one off . Guitards !! Cracking gig mind he he[/sup]
4 x 12s are very directional. Some people would have been deafened while others might not have heard it properly. I've known that to happen even in a small-ish pub. I prefer to deafen everybody with an open backed 2 x 12 combo
5. Trying to wind down after tonights gig. Our landlord & landlady are being kicked out of their tenancy by the greedy bastards at Punch Taverns so I was asked if I could provide music for their last Sat night. This as a result of having done a cracking good gig there 3 weeks ago with the normal 6-piece. Things is I was only asked on Wednesday, and I've been run ragged trying to get a band together. It happened as an acoustic gig (me on guitar, another mate on guitar, and the only other person available from the band as main singer). I'm not used to doing a whole gig on acoustic, and whats more I don't often play rhythm so this was a LOT of effort. My muscles gave up and I just couldn't play the solo in Crazy Little Thing Called Love. We did some stuff that isn't in the bands set eg I did Sweet Baby James on my own, the mate who joined us did a few on his own, and the rest were salvaged from our usual set but done acoustic-wise. I thought it was sh*te but the punters liked it and they were IMO far more polite than they needed to be. Midnight Hour, American Pie, I saw her standing there were the best received. Broke my m fingernail yesterday so patched it with a piece of plastic from a squash bottle and araldite. It held for the gig but came off right at the end so now I'm waiting for more araldite to dry before I can go to bed 'cos I've got to play again tomorrow and that also requires fingerpicking.
6. You rarely go wrong with KEF speakers. I never liked Mission. This pissed off the bloke in Laskys who was telling me how good the Missions were (they were on special offer) but I heard both, and bought the KEFs. Never regretted it.
7. If you have control over gtr & keys EQ I've found that if you notch it down slightly at around 3kHz, it obscures the vocals less.
8.
What a crock.
Janet Jackson is all right.
9. First time I've got to see Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction in all its glory. Best bit of the entire vid
10.
people said I look the part when I sit behind the drumkit. Give that i'm a bass player, I'm a little concerned...
Is that 'cos you're the dead spit of Animal?
11. +1 to all the above. Vocal range is a serious consideration. After that you have to consider the chord voicings you want, and how much you're going to depend on fingerpicking your way through open chords. Playing 6-string bar chords in Eb can be hard work.
12.
My goodness ! I feel, like its 1982 all over again. Great thread. Trouble is ,,I wish it was .
Its still 1967, maaan!
13.
Not really budget but I do love my old Leak Stereo 20.. Maybe you could find one in need of restoration on the cheap?
I've got one of those! Brilliant things, and worth restoring properly not just on the cheap.
14. Arcam Alpha is also good. I got one on fleabay for less than £50.
15.
I have a mate who went the gaffa and cardboard route. Just cut the bottom out of the box his marshall combo came in , made a hole for the handle , gaffa taped the edges then kept sticking old gaffa strips and stickers on it as they came available. After a while you could only see gaffa. His Marshall looked good as new for years.
It's not quite that simple. The product is often placed inside polystyrene corner pieces or other packing so the box is bigger than the product and requires cutting down. If you cut it down you weaken it. That's why my design that I referred to in a previous post on this thread is made from one piece of cardboard folded so that speakers and front-mounted control panels are protected by a double layer. Not as good as roqsolid but a passable cheap alternative.
16. From last weekend:
17. I never liked Rickenbackers. Dull thud for a note with way too much top end plick, and nothing in between to define what the note is. Never really liked the sound of Gibson basses but Jack Bruce with Cream sounded OK. Martin Turner's Thunderbird also did what he needed it to but I can't honestly say its a 'good' bass sound.
18.
I also ride a '72 Norton Commando 750 Roadster! but owned it 25 years
I had a 1971 750 Roadster in Combat spec (932 carbs, 2S cam, 11:1 pistons) excellent bike /thread_hijack
19.
Go for option 1 now, use the experience to have a better chance of achieving 2 at a later date.
^ This ^
20. I sympathise. I used to live in a flat. The kids upstairs were allowed to run around and thump through the ceiling all night & day, but if I got a guitar out the police would be round before I'd tuned it. Would the Gramma Pad help?
21. If you're a decent bass player you can always get a gig. Woss problem?
22. Roqsolid = excellent For small stuff that is infrequently used, or used in relatively benign conditions, I make cardboard covers. I use a large sheet of cardboard (like something that an AC30 would come delivered in) so that I can cut it out of one piece to make a slipover cover. The long sides (where the control panel and the speakers are) get covered with 2 layers of cardboard, and the whole lot is held together with parcel tape. Some of these covers have lasted for over 4 years now, and protected the kit from various knocks. I even have a little spreadsheet that calculates the cutout dimensions of the card for you if you tell it the WxHxD of the thing you're making the cover for. pm me if you want a copy.
23. I don't mind moving my own gear on principle, but I've developed tennis elbow in my left arm and am for now limited in what I can shift. Does anyone else have a SYSTEM for get-ins that ensures there is always one band member in the venue, one with the van (or cars) and others moving in between with gear at any one time?
24. I've got used to my 5 and feel horribly restricted if I go back to my 4.
