'82 Shergold Marathon - a bit pricey though
BassBod replied to ShergoldSnickers's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Looks like a nice unmolested example (and many aren't!) although I'd expect to see some paint cracks on any Shergold? Another nice old bass of its type being hyped into vintage/collector prices...and about twice what any of us would pay. -
Another option is resin filled woods - I think ACG and Zon do this a lot? Talk to your maker...and see what his experiences have been.
-
Any similar Schallers (BML etc) probably use the same screws - I might even have some here on a set (bought for spare parts for my EUB...I've only used one clover leaf in ten years!) Reissue tuners would be fine, and probably available from Thomann. One question is..why did someone change them all? That makes me think a new re-issue set might be the better option....

Fretless Jazz (lined, coated board..looks rough, sounds great)
BassBod replied to BassBod's topic in Basses For Sale
Some interest so far, but still here. I've just found my radius blocks, so I'll have a proper look at the ski slope and re-surface the fingerboard after I've I've got it playing "like butta" as they say on Talk@ass.... Its now wearing a similar fretted neck (but with a nitro finish) in case that interests anyone! -
The simplest way is a quick wipe with brasso..or similar metal polish or Tcut. Once the tarnish has gone you'll see any major scratches, then oil the fingerboard lightly...leave it for ten mins to soak in, may be do that again if its very dry...then clean up with a dry cloth...and maybe put your old strings back on for a day or two, so the remaining oil residue doesn't kill your fresh strings. This happens more with the "lemon oil" sold for guitars than things like almond oil - I guess there are solvents put into the "lemon"mineral oils that escape?

I'm on a Mac...so that's one theory out the way.....

Oil and clean up after fret polishing..and masking the wood is a very good idea. Can you post a photo to show the fret condition? Anything that involves levelling (rather than polishing) is more complicated..so its important to evaluate the state of the frets carefully before you decide what approach to take. Almond oil is nice and cheap, but whatever you use..use it very sparingly. Get hold of some of the plastic 3M fine wool - makes less mess and doesn't find the magnets on your pickups....

Yep - won't work for me today either. Looks like its working...then "no file selected" message

This is a Bitser - Fender re-issue alder body, stripped almost back to wood, then given a rough nitro clear coat. Not flat sanded much..at all. Some sealer coat remains, so it has some colour variation (see photos). the neck plate has been recessed (not by me!) so there is an extra metal neck plate to fill the hole. Not a light body, but I've found it fine. Neck is at least 15 years old, and a good quality Fender copy (from Brandoni). Rosewood board, de-fretted and inlaid with maple markers then given a super glue coating to protect from wear. Its a very thin layer, and adds an edge to the sound. Entire neck is oil finished and aged nicely. Gotoh reverse tuners, one has a slightly bent ear. DiMarzio Model J's - humbuckers, with a warmer tone than single coils. Comes in a new-ish Thomann fake leather gig bag. The set up is fine - but it won't go super low. There is a slight ski-slope at the dusty end of the fingerboard which currently limits it to a medium action (I know that's a debate waiting to happen..but there you go!) Sounds very very good as is, and is perfectly gig-able. I'm asking £300 collected from Bristol/Bath area. Come and try it! If you've ever fancied a fretless this is a good way to try it out. Edit - still can't get photos to load here, but very happy to email to anyone interested. Really looking for a straight sale, (MOT and Tax due) but this is BassChat...so trade bait always an option! TC Electronic Polytune Mini - doesn't work on bass!?
BassBod replied to TRBboy's topic in General Discussion
Yes..the app is pretty bad. I've not used it for more than about ten seconds before shutting it down though, so I may have missed something! -
6 string Andy Summers telecaster guitar project
BassBod replied to kevin_lindsay's topic in Build Diaries
Makes sense - if Andy considered the Clapton circuit a good replacement, 'nuff said. What I found odd was I always thought the Clapton strats had a strong mid eq boost, not just additional gain - but the Fender video sounds like just a gain (and preamp clarity) to me? Then again...I'm a bass player, so anything over 100HZ is going to pass me by. -
6 string Andy Summers telecaster guitar project
BassBod replied to kevin_lindsay's topic in Build Diaries
I seem to recall the preamp in Andy's guitar was the Alembic "blaster" style, as used by Jerry Garcia etc They seem to be pretty simple to build and much copied. Worth investigating further? -
British Audio Services in the USA used to sell the stuff - google them?

Yes they get hot...and the fans are noisy (Studio 220 hasn't got one). I've usually managed to leave a rack space free above, and that seems to be enough to let them cool. I also remember that some of the earlier ones could get damaged if phantom power was applied to the DI, but I've no idea when they fixed that. I usually put a passive DI box into the effects send/preamp out instead...seems to keep engineers happy.

I played mine this morning - a great amp. Bit sparkly if you overdo the enhance...but its not as weedy as some would suggest. EQ can be a bit fussy at first, but its an easy enough system. Mine gets used on its own for small gigs, and sometimes racked with a Stereo 800 as a preamp for the loud stuff. With modern "flat response" cabs it can sound unflattering...the old SWR cabs had a voicing to smooth things out in the mids, same as Eden or Bag End of the same era. That was probably a £600 amp in the mid 80's...when boutique meant Bass Centre. Enjoy!
-
The Bass Centre were never cheap....by any stretch of my memory! Does make you think how Picato/Innovations can be UK made and sold for £80...must be some packaging? Or Danny's luxurious rock star lifestyle has to be supported....um, maybe not.

Now, once the strings are on, we are all expecting to see your YouTube version of the My Generation solo. I know it was played on a J bass with flats, but even so....its the decent thing to do after all that effort. Live in Northampton.
-
For strings, DR Sunbeams are very nice, and are a pretty gentle on the fingerboard. Pickups - I've had loads over the years and my choice would be EMG's (with the tone rolled down a fair bit...they can be very trebly) or the old DiMarzio's humbuckers in a jazz sized case. Wire them in series for the strongest sound. Not a true single coil sound but it works very well on a fretless, and doesn't hum.
-
Gotta be Roto's on that one......
-
Sounds reasonable to me - its your reputation, and they clearly didn't ask if you were ok with it. People just don't think about these things. If it was a singer, chances are they would have been a lot more careful. There are numerous embarrassing/not exactly great vids of me around...but no one is looking much, so I don't think I've suffered....yet!
-
I've not used any EMGs for a while, but I always liked them. Reminded me of the Alembic "tone" - you hear a lot of what your strings sound like, and less what your bass does to them. That can become a bit tedious, but its very good in a lot of situations where you are trying to hear yourself in a noisy environment. If you want vintage character...probably not the best choice? There are plenty of makers doing the vintage materials and design thing. I'd like to hear some of the newer "retro" and X versions - I'd expect them to be fantastic. The PAx looks to be a great combination to me. Not keen on their circuits. I have the old EHB expander in one bass currently, and its a crude sounding thing by current standards (but effective enough when it was designed..yonks ago). The two band eq seemed hissy and bland to me (compared to Aguilar or Sadowsky circuits).
