1. I nearly bought one from Johnny Roadhouse a few years ago....still tempted, if skint.
2. Haven't seen them in a long long time, but I never thought his sound worked well in a live setting - the bigger the hall, the worse it sounded. Probably a lot better these days, with modern PA systems. I was at one of the live shows that became the Physical Presence album and that captures it well..with all its rattle ping and honk. My favourites for bass sound are Standing in the Light and True Colours - one very JD, the other pretty much Status (I guess). Good to see the old slapper still getting about, isn't it?
3. I thought that sounded pretty good, for a quick backstage bash...I've heard worse!
4. The trusty old DiMarzio Model J is nice, but not as bright as a single coil - its got a lot of nice low mid stuff that makes it very clear and solid. There is also the more recent DiMarzio Area J that seems to give a more faithful J bass sound. Personally, I'd go for the new Aguilar ones...but I've not heard them.
5. Yep, the very same. I never turned it off on my Sadowsky PJ either...just don't crank the eq much. I never use more than half the bass boost and about a quarter of the treble. Different strokes and all that
6. Sadowsky outboard preamp - basically a refined music man type boost 2 band eq. Only thing is, once you hear the low end boostyou'll leave it on all the time.
7. Martin...mmmmm...
8. He he..very true, but its not going to get me very close to £2k...and it came from Greg in the first place..
9. Things like this always come up when you're broke....
10. Do let us know how it works out. I'd assume their choice of power amp is pretty good, and very effective. I gave my S15 a good thrashing today with a SWR 350. Did a great job with no PA help - class.
11. DR Sunbeams - feel great, sound warm but lively and don't do much damage to your fingerboard (even rosewood).
12. I find this an interesting move for two reasons - the impedance issue and the "coloration" issue. I've always understood cab impedance to be very nominal - although its quoted as an absolute value, in electrical terms its anything but. And I've experienced problems from a reputable manufacturer slapping an 8ohm label on a cab, when the driver inside was labelled 4ohm. I had no idea why my amp was going into thermal protection (with a pair of 8ohm cabs) until a few years later, when the driver came out of the cab. The modular 2 or 4 or 6x10 makes perfect sense to me. I've now tried several of the modern "flat response" type cabs, and I find them hard work to eq. I prefer the "musical response" built into cabs like the Bag End S15, and most of the old SWR boxes (although they can be a bit too voiced). I hadn't expected to see BF go in this direction, but I expect they will will do it well and only produce designs that work in the gigging environment. The original Compact had a very useful voicing, so now they have more control over driver design I assume they can also be more accurate in how far they go with neutral/voiced cabs. Looking forward to seeing how this goes.. PS - I'm waiting for a powered Super Compact...hint hint...eh?
13. One of mine needs to go in for a hum check sometime...might try and get that added at the same time. And get the DI sorted for phantom power protection.
14. Must look into this one...is that the Talkbass thread?
15. Yeah..that's nice and close - just had my car smashed into, so life's looking complicated for a few weeks...let me know the where and when's?
16. Yes, a rack bag just about does it for me, with a bit of overhang. My dream set up is the Alembic F2B, with a quality 1u power amp, and a pair of S15's. I'm half way there...
17. Been using an S-15D for a few years...small and very good all rounder, but old school weight. Gives all the stuff you need to hear on stage, but does miss the real low end - actually works as a benefit when you DI, as you get turned up a bit louder in the house! I'd love to use a pair of these cabs for louder gigs but I've never found another cheap enough to do it. Old school, but a solid performer.
18. Hey Chris, You ever around Bristol/Bath...and would a Crazy 8 cab be of any use to you?
19. Not seen him yet..but I hear he's gooood.
20. Unless its big and heavy, I'd take a hit and not worry - that's the cost of trying something out. Remember the days of having to trade things in with shops? Now that was taking a hit....
21.
One for the 'you wont see another.." pile Zemaitis 1989 custom built for me by the man himself. As far as I can tell he built probably 3 fretless basses, the other two being accoustics. Fantastic instrument, warm and rounded as a fretless should be. Not much curly wood but a class act nonethless.
Very interesting that one. I was talking to a local Zemaitis bass owner a few days ago - he said it was an incredible instrument with real resonance. Not one I've ever heard much about, even here amongst the dedicated bass hoarders. Any more details? Looks like DiMarzios, and I'm guessing passive? Bolt on neck or glued/thru?
22. They aren't very durable - the zips on the Rockbags don't last very long at all (I've got two with various problems, including the rack rails coming undone form the walls - held on with two small nuts, no washers). I'd go for the Gator version, but don't expect years of service. They are good for car travel, with a fairly light amp. May be an idea to buy one with a free space above for cooling.
23. Thanks for that - I might have a look around and see. The attraction of the AVI unit was that it contained three powerful amps and a DAC and a few digital inputs, which means I could lose few boxes (amp and DAC) and gain some performance improvements all safe in the knowledge that it was designed to work together. The fact I never got around to it/had the money to spend tells me that I probably don't need it. Strangely, it was always the bigger Spendors that felt lacking in the lows...despite being at least three times bigger than the Neutrons.
24. Yes, I think they are probably right. It does seem daft to have music pegged at CD quality, when downloading allows an immediate higher platform and removes the waste of physical distribution. Its a shame for me that I couldn't afford the sub woofer/power amp/Dac they made to go with the Neutrons. Its out of production now, although they do pop up on EvilBay. The little Neutrons apparantly don't do much below 100HZ but I really don't notice any lack of depth in a small living room. The Audiolab amp I use has a gentle bass boost that I sometimes use for low level listening, but I'm sure the sub unit would be a different experience.
25. Give us a clue - I need a badge (a good sign, I believe) to identify...
