1. I've tried the Schaller (yuck, it rattled) and Kent Armstrong (good, but dark...like a giant Fender) and the best was an old Pierre Joseph String Charger. Looks very Wallace and Grommet, but its a single coil with a more open sound, attaches using strong velcro and the coil can moved around a bit to balance up the sound. I bought it used on here, but they sold me some extra mounting bits (posted form USA) with no hassle. It did fall off once, so the velcro isn't fool proof (you have to make sure its really locked into place). Look it up? They've made them for a long time, so I guess there are used ones around.
2. The PJB BigHead is very good - well worth the cash if you will be using headphones regularly. The PJB headphones are also very good, but there are many others that work well for less. Many of the modern small ampheads also work without speakers, and have headphone outputs, but they are often hissy and a bit of an afterthought...I'd rather use the BigHead for its sound quality.
3. Used them yesterday for a very noisy blues bash. I wasn't expecting much - they appear to be a solid piece of metal, with a rubber earpiece...no sign of any filter etc. They worked very well, a lot of volume reduction but enough definition to know what was going on. Fine for two hours or so, but like earbud headphones, I think extended wearing could get a bit uncomfortable. Pretty good so far, but not replacements for the proper moulds.
4. They are a slightly peculiar screw - very similar to a normal fender bridge/strap pin mounting screw, but with a slightly smaller head, that fits into the back of the strap button exactly (has a squared edge). They are also very soft and its easy to strip out the head if you haven't drilled quite deep enough. Trust me. Despite this, still my favourite by far...
5. Hi Jon, I'll have them, will email later when I get home
6. Yep, I've had one for a while...its really good. Clean sounds only but very good quality. My only issue is you can't use it as DAC from your iPhone (using the lightening connector) because it starts to draw power and charge itself from the phone...or at lease thats what your phone tells you!
7. There's a few here in Brizzle and around - watch out it gets expensive if you look about the For Sales too long...
8. Oh yes, and I am very tempted. Very. One question - I only see one gain/volume control...so I'm assuming the input level is pre-set and you have control over the output volume of the power amp?
9. Pics...nice big ones...that could tip the balance...
10. Looks like a lot of fun....Rob Allen and Mo Clifton basses in one room....
11. Very tempted...lets see how much I get paid by Friday! 😜
12. Looks like 4pm at the Town Hall for me...didn't know there was a Town Hall...
13. Will do....think I'm playing on the Sat afternoon, be good to meet a few more BassChatters. Fancy a few mins banter about flatwounds, anyone?
14. I wouldn't say so - they are very good, and were also very popular with acoustic guitarists for blending internal mic and pickups. I paid around £200 for one a few years ago, and moved it on for about the same. The only real issue is the power system - you can use a mains adapter, but it's an odd system that uses + and - 9v from two units (or outputs) linked. It also uses a stereo mini Jack for power connection, which can kill the power supply if it shorts out (gets pulled) with power running. Two batteries works fine, but is a bit expensive if you leave it switched on by mistake (unplugging doesn't switch off the power).
15. Lovely stuff...one day...
16. Made by Elvic...now called Neutronics, in Essex. Worth a Google search and phone call...
17. Just take it to a good repair tech - it's 80's so should be easily understood and repairable. If you search on here (or web) you can find out who the manufacturing company was...I've got a feeling they are still around.
18.
i'm using this at the moment & I really like it .
What's the build quality like - will it survive on the floor? 😳
19. Yes, I've been thinking about that - but I'm using the Retroglide amp a lot these days...same eq! I'm in danger of becoming an Ashdown fan...😜
20. I'm sure it sounds great, but I'm not getting why you would want to be foot selecting eq bands....and wondering where and how I would carry it....interested to see what you make of it! For the record, my favourite DI is flat response, with a mute footswitch.....I'm probably eqphobic.
21. Ok, thanks...I think mine (rear ported GII) is a 23" cube....
22. Do you know which version of the Goliath this fits? Mine is a Goliath II....
23. I tried with an iPhone6 and got an error message....the BigHead was trying to charge itself from the phone....ooops..
24. Used GK 150MB or the newer series small combos. There was a Polytone on Bass Direct's site..worth a try.
25. Retro 800 in the amps for sale today...😜
