  1. Now I understand why my Retroglide has a fan, even though it never even thinks about getting warm, let alone hot. I guess the earlier designs proved it was better to be safe than hot...
  2. Andy Manners - very very good, in Corsham just along the M4 (or A4 in old money).
  3. Sadowsky flats or DR flats - both are much more forgiving and flexible than most flats, and have plenty of life. Black tape wounds can be nice, but they also break the earth connection at the bridge so can make your instrument a bit buzzy (not in a good way) in some venues. My favourite for fretless is still DR Sunbeams (or Pure Blues). Nickel round wounds, but gentle on fingerboards and it takes a long time before the marks are significant, even on a rosewood board.
  4. Been counting pennies, but not looking hopeful. Quick question - what’s the pickup?
  5. Just about the only bass I really regret selling - would buy it if I currently could 😳
  6. Should work well, except the single coil hum would be an issue, if you included a true single coil option. Running a passive J bass into a Sadowsky preamp is very close to the same thing..and that's always sounded great to me. I would use DiMarzio Model J humbuckers, cut off the tabs on one side, and glue them together. Not very elegant (or exactly the same size!) but should be fun.
  7. Yes, before messing around with IC's I'd want to know the power supply was still operating within spec.
  8. Not this year...but have fun 😎
  9. Recently bought an Ashdown combo from Chris - great BassChat transaction. No worries here.....fair price, all as described...good communications...how it should be!
  10. Yes please...in Brizzle.. PM sent..
  11. Not a particularly dodgy bit of Brizzle, although it does have some more vibrant areas close by. Hope they had some sort of insurance, but I suspect not. That starts in your mid thirties...
  12. Should work fine, but there is a risk of earth loop hum if not using balanced connections with an earth lift option. You can run the preamp out (or DI) into any amp's effects return, but what you get depends on the levels...jack output/line level would be best.
  13. Surely BD could stretch to a Sat delivery...amazed they didn't offer 😳
  14. Looks a lot like one you put together a while back? 😜
  15. Don't spend much, a modern Sovtek or Electro Harmonix 12AX7 would be fine. The original was a Groove Tube..but they just re-branded modern valves, mainly Chinese production. They run some production now, but not back then. SWR and Groove Tubes were close to each other, hence SWR's generally shipped with them.
  16. Swapping the valve is easy and pretty cheap, and there is only one - try that first. My experience is that preamp valves go on for many many years, and usually just stop working after getting banged about in transport. I'd also check the speakers/tweeter. Its quite a lot of power into some not very great speakers (by current standards) so its easy to damage them by putting too much into them. The original version was something like 240w but the Super version upper that quite a bit..something like 350w into the internal 2x10" cab. SWR's always get hot (by design), especially those without internal fans - if the valve makes no difference and the speakers seem ok then get it checked over for failing components.
  17. Bump time.....
  18. [attachment=251927:IMG_0268.JPG][attachment=251928:IMG_0269.JPG] No covers pics above, but sorry I don't have a meter....
  19. I used to think the rivets holding the TE XLR sockets in were a bit daft. But recently I had to take out the same Switchcraft XLR from one of my SWR's (to do up a grub screw). Yes, it had two screws holding it in but they were very short self tappers, into a very thin metal panel so had about 3/4 of a turn to get a grip. Now the rivets don't seem so bad.
  20. These are superb old style single coil Jazz pickups. They came out of my '66 style Bravewood bass, and I believe were made in the USA by Voodoo/Peter Florance. No markings to confirm this, unfortunately. I believe these are the 'black" version, reproducing a 1965 style Fender pickup. They sound absolutely right, burp bark and honk...at the cost of some single coil hum and microphonics. [attachment=251849:IMG_2756.JPG] Covers have been "aged" with softened edges and pole pieces are also marked..as with Bravewood guitars. The bridge pickup was re-wound and wax potted by Barenuckle a few years ago after becoming very microphonic. From memory it was still a bit microphonic when it came back, but a lot better. Cables are pretty short, but just as they came out of the Bravewood jazz bass. [attachment=251850:IMG_2757.JPG] I got fed up with the single coil hum so put an old set of Bartolini pickups into the bass last year. Not so vintage. but no hum and its still a great sound. 21. Just read the manual - both inputs have 10meg ohm input impedance, making it useable for piezo pickups and very good for passive magnetic pickups. Also the battery life is quoted as 100 hours, which explains why it was never really an issue 😎
  22. This is nice, and a bit unusual. Raven Labs was the small company started by Steve Rabe, after he sold SWR. They made useful high quality preamp/eq/DI type boxes that were very much state of the art for the time. I've owned this for at least ten years...probably more like 15.. The APD-1 is an active DI that also uses an audio transformer for the output. Lots of good features - two inputs (both switchable in/out) - standby mute switch - separate tuner output - effects loop, with variable blend control to mix effects in - four output levels choices for DI plus ground lift - phase reverse [attachment=251820:OriginalPhoto-525084040.938944.jpg] This unit is in excellent condition, just one or two slight paint scratches. The only issue is the power supply. Raven Labs used an unusual +/-9v power supply, but also a stereo mini jack connector - these could kill the power supply if pulled, and often did. So I've run this on batteries (2x9v) and never had any problems - the included manual suggests 50-60 hours battery life. You just have make sure you turn it off with the switch, not just unplug.
