1. A lovely thing. What's the string spacing at the bridge, scale length and approximate weight please?
2. For sale is my 1980/81 Ibanez Roadster RS924 in transparent red, a rare, underrated, but very high quality bass. Being 30+ years old, it has a few dings and chips here and there, and a bit of buckle rash on the back, but is still in great shape for its age. The only real flaw I know of is that the head has come off one of the truss rod cover plate screws, but otherwise it's all original, fully functional, sounds phenomenal, and has very little fret wear. P/J configuration with a powerful 2-band active 9V EQ. Controls are: volume, tone, bass cut/boost, treble cut/boost, and pickup selector and active/passive switches. No hard case, but I'll include a good quality gig bag. Please don't tempt me with trades, I'm trying to downsize!! Price is £395 plus shipping, or can be collected from near junction 10 of the M25. So you can hear what these basses sound like, here's a clip of Graham Edwards with Go West soloing live on the 80's music TV program 'The Tube', with a huge sound just from the bridge pickup. The actual bass he's playing was originally mine - one of three I've owned over the years - I sold it to him after being tempted by a shiny new Stingray... HAS NOW BEEN SOLD - THANKS FOR ALL YOUR INTEREST!
3. Taken from a 'project' bass I bought recently (the neck is for sale separately on the forum) a set of 5 open gear tuners with half inch posts, 3 up, 2 down. Very good condition, [s]£45[/s] [s]£35[/s] £30 posted in the UK. Now surely that's a bargain! NOW SOLD
4. For sale is a 2003 Korean Lakland Skyline Joe Osborn 5-string neck taken from a Lakland/Prose 'project' bass I bought recently. It's in reasonable overall condition, apart from a small split behind the nut caused by the truss rod retainer being too close to the surface. It seems that this was a not uncommon problem with some of the early Skylines, but the neck is straight and stable, and the split has not worsened in the three or four years since the bass was assembled. I managed to get hold of a new JO neck and had it swapped for purely cosmetic reasons while I was having other work done to the body and electronics. A perfectly serviceable neck, but not pristine, hence I'm letting it go for a mere £75 posted in the UK... NOW SOLD
5. Surplus to requirements due to an upgrade to FD-3(4L)'s, I have a pair of Dingwall FD-3A pickups taken from my nearly-new Combustion 5, in excellent cosmetic condition. £75 posted. NOW WITHDRAWN as I'll be selling the Dingwall they came from very soon, and want to include them in the sale. Keep an eye on Basses For Sale in the next few days if interested...
6. I've owned a headless S2, and a headed Empathy, both 5's. If you can get your head (no pun intended) around a headless, it feels very liberating and unencumbered, and there is a school of thought that states the lack of a head means a more even response, as markorbit said. I can't say that, as in my experience I felt my Empathy was more tonally consistent than the S2! The Empathy isn't made anymore obviously, so if you're going for a new S2, my only advice would be don't go for a bolt-on, pay the extra and get a thru-neck. In my opinion, the extra rigidity seems to make the bass sing a bit more. That said, it's worth noting that the new S2s, unlike the Empathy, don't have a complete 'thru-neck', as it stops at the bridge pickup. What effect that could have on the overall tone of the instrument is endlessly debatable, so I'd wait for others to put in their twopence worth about that! One warning about the headless - unless you use double ball end strings, be aware that the allen studs used to secure a standard string at the head can fracture the core if over-tightened. I had a couple of Gs snap on me there. You also may fall foul of headless-haters who think anything without a head is an '80's bass'! Ponytails and legwarmers are optional if you play one, of course. I like either myself, and the Status head is good looking, compact and nicely in proportion, IMHO.
7. This is potentially a bit of a minefield, and no doubt there are recognised techniques for left as well as right hand damping, but personally, I just move my thumb onto the E when I'm playing the A, D or G, and even up to the D on occasion, but whatever works for you, obviously. The string spacing of your chosen 5 will play some part in this too, I reckon, as well as the size of your hands - I play a Lakland DJ5 with wide spacing, but then again I have hands like shovels. I assume you're well over the hurdle of mistaking the B for an E... when I got my first five 20 years ago, I made the mistake of taking it onstage for a big gig at Alexandra Palace. The first number was in E, and I hit a huge, trouser-flapping B. Didn't go down well!
8. Wahay! I'm amazed it hung around so long. It deserves to be hanging around someone's knees having 'Lights Out' played on it. Very loudly.
9.
I don't want to keep bumping this thread, but I took a look at the Sadowsky site...it's OK, but again, product-wise, the models are just rehashed/overpriced Jazz/Precision basses. For something a little more compelling, look at the Reverend site; http://www.reverendg...nd/guitars.html. The basses are really very happening. The black set-neck Thundergun made me go a little wobbly. Stick a chrome armrest kit on that...beautiful. P
Good god, those Reverend basses are something else - I want a Mercalli 5! The metallic blue would set off my black sparkle DJ5 nicely...
10. I very nearly bought this bass from Nick when he first had it up for sale a few years ago, and I can attest to its light weight. If only it had a maple board! Best of luck with the sale.
11. I just sold an Aguilar GS412 cab to beastie, and a nicer chap you couldn't wish to meet. Thanks Gary!
12. Bought a rather lovely 'Little Buddy' pedal steel from Mark, and he could not have done more in terms of communication, information and attention to detail. The packaging was excellent too. Thanks Mark! Now I just have to learn to play the thing....
13. Hmm. As for playing it naked, I'm sure it would chaff in the worst places. Also, I think a maple neck would have been more fitting - the rosewood would clash with my pink lamé body stocking...
14.
Just one Cornetto?
Sorry - obscure British TV advert reference. The melody from 'It's Now Or Never' was used on an advert for an ice cream called Cornetto with the words 'Just one Cornetto, give it to me, delicious ice cream, from Italy...' You probably have to be over 40 to remember it too...
