1. For what it's worth, I have a 2007 Skyline (Korean) Lakland DJ5, and also had a 2008 Skyline (Indonesian) DJ5, but I much prefer the Korean - it has a bigger sound, and is a little heavier, which may have something to do with it. I sold the 2008 DJ5 to finance a new purchase, but not because it was a bad bass in any way - the build quality and general finish was excellent, it played beautifully, and sounded great. I've also owned USA Laklands in the past, and they are higher quality, but perhaps not so much that it justifies the much bigger price tag, in my opinion. As EssentialTension said further up the thread - try before you buy, every bass is different.
2.
For a bass I wanted to try but never had the chance. I will offer £850.00, if not have a bump.
Thanks for the offer, but as it's nearly £1700 worth of bass and accessories, it would need to be a bit more than that! Please PM me if you want to chat about it, as I don't get notified when comments are left on the topic.
3. For sale is my MM Stingray 5 in Honeyburst, fitted with a custom see-thru plate. The previous owner, although he thought the circuitry being visible looked very cool, found it picked up a tiny bit of hum in the studio as the plate's not foil backed as normal. As a temporary work-around, he took some foil, trimmed it to size, and fitted it under the plate to 'seal' the control cavity from interference, which it does very well. I've never bothered to remove it in the 5 years I've owned the bass, as I think it looks slightly reminiscent of a 4-string Stingray's chrome control plate. Overall it's in very good condition, apart from a few very small dings in the lacquer on the lower edge of the body, but nothing major. The other notable thing about this example is it's a lightweight for a Stingray 5 - I've owned a few over the years, so I can attest to this - weighing in at only 8.25 lbs. Comes with a good quality Fender gigbag, price £900 plus shipping. Please don't tempt me with trades, I'm trying to downsize!! More pics (along with some of my Clover Avenger 5, Dingwall Combustion 5, and Ibanez Roadster that are also up for sale) are here: http://s1141.photobu...wwregisterhead/ NOW SOLD...
4. For sale is my Clover Avenger 5 in black/maple, really excellent condition, ungigged, with Gator hard case. Price is £1150 plus shipping for a quick sale. Please don't tempt me with trades, I'm trying to downsize!! More pics (along with some of my Dingwall Combustion 5, Stingray 5 and Ibanez Roadster that are also up for sale) are here: http://s1141.photobu...wwregisterhead/ No takers, so now WITHDRAWN and off to The Gallery for a commission sale...
5. For sale is my Dingwall Combustion 5 in white, excellent condition, never gigged, upgraded FD-3(4L) pickups fitted (original FD-3A's included) plus brand new Protec semi-rigid gig bag. The bass is currently up at The Gallery for a commission sale, priced at £1150, but can be retrieved for private sale. Please don't tempt me with trades, I'm trying to downsize!! The list price of this bass without the £240 pickup upgrade and £100 Protec case is over £1300 (see Bass Direct links below) and this one has never even been gigged - it's literally as new. Grab a bargain! 6. Bump for a final price reduction... surely someone must want this? Where's Shirley when you need her??
7.
Sorry! The 4 is sold and I don't have a five... or a six.
Oh well, that's a shame - just wondered!
8. And another... surely someone must want this for a 'project' bass.... is Shirley out there??
9. Between the BB1100S, your '80 Roadster and your '81 Blazer, you own three of the landmark basses in my early playing career! I toured all over the world with my BB... a wonderful bass. Best of luck with the sale.
10. A lovely thing. What's the string spacing at the bridge, scale length and approximate weight please?
11. For sale is my 1980/81 Ibanez Roadster RS924 in transparent red, a rare, underrated, but very high quality bass. Being 30+ years old, it has a few dings and chips here and there, and a bit of buckle rash on the back, but is still in great shape for its age. The only real flaw I know of is that the head has come off one of the truss rod cover plate screws, but otherwise it's all original, fully functional, sounds phenomenal, and has very little fret wear. P/J configuration with a powerful 2-band active 9V EQ. Controls are: volume, tone, bass cut/boost, treble cut/boost, and pickup selector and active/passive switches. No hard case, but I'll include a good quality gig bag. Please don't tempt me with trades, I'm trying to downsize!! Price is £395 plus shipping, or can be collected from near junction 10 of the M25. So you can hear what these basses sound like, here's a clip of Graham Edwards with Go West soloing live on the 80's music TV program 'The Tube', with a huge sound just from the bridge pickup. The actual bass he's playing was originally mine - one of three I've owned over the years - I sold it to him after being tempted by a shiny new Stingray... HAS NOW BEEN SOLD - THANKS FOR ALL YOUR INTEREST!
12. Taken from a 'project' bass I bought recently (the neck is for sale separately on the forum) a set of 5 open gear tuners with half inch posts, 3 up, 2 down. Very good condition, [s]£45[/s] [s]£35[/s] £30 posted in the UK. Now surely that's a bargain! NOW SOLD
13. For sale is a 2003 Korean Lakland Skyline Joe Osborn 5-string neck taken from a Lakland/Prose 'project' bass I bought recently. It's in reasonable overall condition, apart from a small split behind the nut caused by the truss rod retainer being too close to the surface. It seems that this was a not uncommon problem with some of the early Skylines, but the neck is straight and stable, and the split has not worsened in the three or four years since the bass was assembled. I managed to get hold of a new JO neck and had it swapped for purely cosmetic reasons while I was having other work done to the body and electronics. A perfectly serviceable neck, but not pristine, hence I'm letting it go for a mere £75 posted in the UK... NOW SOLD
14. Surplus to requirements due to an upgrade to FD-3(4L)'s, I have a pair of Dingwall FD-3A pickups taken from my nearly-new Combustion 5, in excellent cosmetic condition. £75 posted. NOW WITHDRAWN as I'll be selling the Dingwall they came from very soon, and want to include them in the sale. Keep an eye on Basses For Sale in the next few days if interested...
15. I've owned a headless S2, and a headed Empathy, both 5's. If you can get your head (no pun intended) around a headless, it feels very liberating and unencumbered, and there is a school of thought that states the lack of a head means a more even response, as markorbit said. I can't say that, as in my experience I felt my Empathy was more tonally consistent than the S2! The Empathy isn't made anymore obviously, so if you're going for a new S2, my only advice would be don't go for a bolt-on, pay the extra and get a thru-neck. In my opinion, the extra rigidity seems to make the bass sing a bit more. That said, it's worth noting that the new S2s, unlike the Empathy, don't have a complete 'thru-neck', as it stops at the bridge pickup. What effect that could have on the overall tone of the instrument is endlessly debatable, so I'd wait for others to put in their twopence worth about that! One warning about the headless - unless you use double ball end strings, be aware that the allen studs used to secure a standard string at the head can fracture the core if over-tightened. I had a couple of Gs snap on me there. You also may fall foul of headless-haters who think anything without a head is an '80's bass'! Ponytails and legwarmers are optional if you play one, of course. I like either myself, and the Status head is good looking, compact and nicely in proportion, IMHO.
16. This is potentially a bit of a minefield, and no doubt there are recognised techniques for left as well as right hand damping, but personally, I just move my thumb onto the E when I'm playing the A, D or G, and even up to the D on occasion, but whatever works for you, obviously. The string spacing of your chosen 5 will play some part in this too, I reckon, as well as the size of your hands - I play a Lakland DJ5 with wide spacing, but then again I have hands like shovels. I assume you're well over the hurdle of mistaking the B for an E... when I got my first five 20 years ago, I made the mistake of taking it onstage for a big gig at Alexandra Palace. The first number was in E, and I hit a huge, trouser-flapping B. Didn't go down well!
