1.
People are incredibly open to influence and are literally functioning on a day to day basis whilst in varying degree's of trance.
It's not really trance, more openness to suggestion depending on how much they trust you. There's nothing unusual about the science of persuasion, however it's actually possible for competent managers at work to modify other people's behaviour over two weeks through repeated positive daily reinforcement. It works at home too. Say if your kids don't tidy up their rooms, then say to them every day something like 'I really like it when your room is tidy, it looks so nice and you do such a good job of it too' for two weeks. See if it works or not
2. You looked very professional Chris, and very comfortable with the camera. I know only too well the challenges of explaining technical complexities to an audience with non technical levels of comprehension. I thought it was a nice balance between comprehesiveness and accessibility.
3. I think sometimes inexperienced players don't realise that super hi fidelity recording standard backlines are unnecessary in order to hear themselves. I've also played through some players rigs on shared billing nights and been shocked at how muddy their backline sounds (and been mystified at how they manage to play in tune other than by sight). A live rig just needs to offer control, honesty and volume, in my experience. All that is needed is some adjustment to compensate for stage acoustics. The GK RB700 1x15 combo I played for a long while was pretty much the perfect gigging amp apart from the weight and those f***ing castors that kept disintegrating. Valve DI's have their place in a studio players backline, but realistically those who can earn a living from studio work are increasingly uncommon. Besides which most decent studios these days will have an Avalon VT737SP which is increasingly the last word in DI preamps anyway.
4. Jimmy Johnson's Alembic Series 1 graphite necked 5 string.
5.
+1 Your on to something.
When there's PA support, rigs only need to be used for on stage monitoring purposes. FOH sound is always down to the engineer and they have a tricky enough job to do as it is without it being made more complicated by a player who is making adjustments but can't hear what he sounds like to the audience.
6. Blueburst with white edge binding and a carved top specifically, like the D'Aquisto arch tops but with figured maple. I don't have much experience of playing ovangkol, all I know is that there are basses I've played that have exactly the sound I've been looking for and they have a combination of about 2/3 wenge to 1/3 maple. Unfortunately the same basses all had body shapes I couldn't get on with. But the wood combo seems to generate all the growl of wenge but, when enough maple is used, without the brittle top end. But we'll see how much growl is already present with just the mahogany body and graphite neck.
7. I get the impression that many amp makers: 1) Just don't understand what their customers want (and how that is different to their endorsers). I'll cite the lack of dual inputs BUT the inclusion of dual preamps on some amps as an example. 2) Are in a competitive market and looking for ways to stay competitive even if the market and current amp technology doesn't offer much opportunity to innovate I can recall a time in the 80's when bass makers were in the same boat and pretty much every feature described in the catalogues for many Japanese instruments had "Pat. Pending" or "TM" by the name regardless of whether it was actually innovative or not.
8. BB basses from the 80's can have pretty chunky necks but they have a fabulous P bass sound. Little River Band's bassist Wayne Nelson was a big endorser during the 80's (and sported one of the first BB5000 5 strings when they came out). The RBX series left me a little dead but are also good instruments. The TRB through necks in the 90's are also stunning value although I've found the string spacing to be very wide. For 40 quid you did extremely well.
9. Welcome. That's a fantastic collection of 6 string, short scale, piccolo basses. What amps do you use with those?
10. Toby Pro basses (with the wenge laminate necks) are very good value used and, with a change of electronics, transform a good instrument into almost a pro level.

Wow - that's classy.
12. I was surprised by the listed value of their assets. Its a shame that a company goes like this after the history its generated.
13. Give Hevos a look - very high quality handmade class D amps and their latest line up includes an amp with dual inputs. They're not over priced either.
14. Jon has decided to push his own builds before the end of April so I'm booked to go back in on May 12. I'll get at least one done for sure...hopefully both but the precision stuff does take a long time to set up, especially when tired. I've also been thinking about maple and wenge necks as on the instruments I've played, they have the mids that I'm looking for. But we'll see how the steinberger necks go first.
15. I did a bit of Youtube surfing yesterday - the Fender 30 and 60 combos (around 1980) have the Fender sound and (in the US at least) seem to be ridiculously cheap.
16. I've done a bit of research on the Yammie SA models too - very well made!
17.
Can we rename the mods to this? Oh, and the admins can be... what's higher than sheriff? Commissioner?
Uberschteppengruppenfuhrer?
18.
It's been a long journey from the flasher mac (with leggings) to the stately Halls of Justice. That the shimmying sexual acrobat of yore now spends his days trawling the internet for copyright infractions is rather depressing.
In the past he has employed a company called 'Web Sherrif'
It's taken 6 year but I finally agree with BRX on something.
Well at least you're positive about something!
20.
You're in that Londo, aren't you? Hie thyself unto Chandlers or Regent Sound - they're Wampler dealers. Plus some more around the M25 periphery - Wampler dealer page here As for the chimy stuff, you may wish to try the Wampler Black '65. Catalinbread SFT does a nice Keefy-y Ampeg chime too.
Thanks for the tip. I might go visit Regents anyway this Saturday given I need to get a couple of sets of strings and a small cable.
21. Marshall overdrive seems fairly easy to achieve...even with just a pedal. But they sound kind of flat to me. That bouncey, chimey Fender clean tone is pretty dynamic. When I've played through a twin in the past, the slightly compressed highs made me feel like I was interacting with the amp...it was so very far from flat sounding and I got a lot of satisfaction from giving the strat a decent spanking. But twins weigh a tonne and are too loud for my needs.
I like it.
I'm almost there myself.
Interestingly, Nile Rodgers appears in the 'Get Lucky' video with a bit of tape over the Fender logo of his guitar.
The transparent one? Is it possible that it might not have been a Fender?
23. Are they really like Fenders on steroids? Or completely different? Just curious...
24. The extra layer of laminate is the only difference between a GN and an EG. Drop us both a PM given this thread has been locked by a moderator. :/
25. Although he has a very strong set of personal values, I'm not sure what Prince's tactics are commercially. If he's attempting to maintain value of his product by restricting supply, it seems as likely to create frustration in his fan base as demand. Looks like he's over here on Feb 3 for a short series of impromptu concerts in London. Unfortunately I have a formal dinner on Feb 4 to attend and need to pack for a trip to China on Feb 6. Here's hoping something is planned on Feb 5 and I'm within reach of tickets...his 2007 after show gigs were a life changing experience for me.
