Vivid Amps, new bass and guitar amp company in the US
Kiwi replied to TomRichards's topic in Amps and Cabs
No. My opinion as someone with 35 years of professional bass playing behind me who uses mostly Hartke amps and cabs and has been looking for a small, lightweight amp of this caliber for years. Hey, we all know that Hartke heads are NOT small, compact and lightweight. My LH500, my current workhorse, And it weighs 25 lbs in its Gator soft rack case with cables. While not the heaviest, it sure is a lot to lug. Add to that the either 30 lb HyDrive 112 or the 70 lb HyDrive 4X10 and, well, that is a lot to lug. And, a lot of amps do NOT sound good paired with my Hartke cabs, at least to me, so I am selective for sure. Also, I have a Cerwin Vega Dan Armstrong Hot Cab, 210G, with an open back, that I have never found a good amp to drive it with. http://www.danarmstr...g/hotcabs3.html This one, so far, actually works very well with it, and produces great sound. And this cab weighs only 21 lbs. I hope this clears it up for you.
Your endorsement undermines the credibility of everything you say on the brand you are endorsing. Whether you play other equipment or not and how long you've been playing for is meaningless. -
Yes, this amp is definitely not everyones cup of tea. But I think it merits a look,
In your opinion, as someone with a commercial interest in promoting this brand? -
They want chinos for men and cocktail dresses for women. We are a hard rock covers band and are going to end up looking like Michael Buble's backing band
How about dressing up like a hard rock covers band forced to wear chinos against its will? Rip those chinos at the knees, put studs and different coloured patches on etc. Charge the client for the cost of chinos.

Amazing and fun bit of kit. What a shame they're not made any more.

South East Bass Bash No.7, Surrey, Saturday 21st September 2013
Are you coming with us, Steve? I've added you below
I believe so! Still not sure if the Pangborn will be ready by then but the Shuker 6 should be. -
It depends. Do radical departures from original versions make you angry? (I do like this bass tone here though some may think it harsh).
OK sounds a little boxy to me in the upper mids a bit like a Tobias. But this would be an asset if it sat lower in the mix. It reminds me of how a jazz might have been recorded in the 80's.

Are there any youtube clips that show the instrument being used in anger?
Yes - and generally the levels of evangelism increase in direct proportion to the price paid!
BTW - I own a vintage Fender Jazz. Its a nice instrument, I like it as much as my preEB stingray because it reminds me of the bass sound I've heard on many pop tracks. It sounds right but that feeling isn't due to the design of the instrument, it's due to the familiarity of what I hear. My Spector NS5 is still a better bass for dance/house/RnB although a 5 string Fender Jazz or an Alembic Distillate 5 could probably do the job just as well. Just because I like the Spector doesn't mean I have to cite its proof of the existence of God just because it makes a sound I'm familiar with. I'm really curious to find out more about the Squier Jazz Deluxes and see how they stack up to other instruments. I hope someone will bring one to the SE Bassbash next month so I can have a go on it.

Okaaaay, it's worth bearing in mind that... 1) There are instruments that could be considered every bit as sophisticated as a double bass in terms of attention to materials and construction e.g. Alembic, Smith, Jaydee etc. 2) Some orchestral double basses are made out of non-specific plywood e.g. kay 3) Some owners of vintage instruments exhibit near evangelical levels of post rationalisation to justify why old instruments sound better to them which bear little relation to the ethos behind their manufacture. (And perhaps more to do with the associations those instruments create when played.)
Thereby proving that despite all the millions of words posted here and elsewhere and all the thousands of varying opinions about this or that bass or combinations of components and endless permutations of options, it boils down to the fact that the electric bass guitar is really a very simple animal indeed and that the most basic designs often work the best.
If you're accustomed to hearing the basic designs most in the music you like to listen to.
It's in one of the Louis Johnson bass tutorial things on You Tube. He says Leo made him about ten basses and that one has some special pick up magic - it sounds over wound to my ears.
Ah ok, thanks for that. The winding process apparently was a bit erratic in terms of windings so it might well be overwound.

For a moment, the title made me think a new medical procedure had been developed.

I think I got missed off the list after Happy Jack. If it isn't being refinished, I'll bring the Pangborn given it seems likely that the 70's Fender thing is likely to be covered by someone else. I may also bring my custom strat if the Wilkinson trem is installed by then for a bit of Nile Rodgering. -
There are all sorts of ways to create a slight break up, he could have the gain turned up too much somewhere along his signal chain. Where did you see that there was a change to the pick up? This is interesting. I guess he could have wired the coils to series rather than parallel but his bass sounds pretty similar to my 78 apart from the slight break up and mine is stock (ie. parallel)
To get the Louis Johnson slap sound you need a sabre or two pick up ray and have both pick ups on. I have an HH Ray and love it totally.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CslkVhOoE2U Hmm, are you sure?
My god a Bongo with a graphite neck would sound so modern and aggressive it would be unreal!!!
Bongos are pretty warm sounding by themselves but with the extra mids from the graphite neck, I think that would be an exceptionally nice sounding bass. Therefore probably no chance it will be built.
The best Stingrays for looks and sound that i have seen were made by Ernie Ball in the late eighties/early nineties. Not played so couldn't comment on feel.
I've been saying this on here for the last 10 years. I still have a preEB ray though not for any reason other than it was cheap and I was going for the Bernard Edwards thing. But if there wasn't the genre association, I'd have an 87 or 88 blueburst ray with a birdseye neck.
I would struggle to understand why anyone would pay silly amounts for a pre-ernie ball Musicman over the new Musicman Classic series, unless they were a collector.
I haven't played the classic series yet but well worn basses sound a bit mellower to me. Of course the trick is not to pay silly amounts in the first place.

If only you knew how much rare quilted NZ red beech had been squandered in floor boards just because the mills couldn't be bothered cutting it twice as wide.
