Can't remember the make on this one, is it really a Steinberger or are we talking about different models?
Different models but I believe the principle of rotating frets is the same. The steinberger version was operated by a rotating knob at the headstock rather than a sliding lever at the heel. http://www.steinbergerworld.com/special/xm2fl.htm
Appart from all the ideas over here i really like the idea of having a neck that can go from fretted to fretless with a flick of a switch. It has also already been done by somebody whose name i can't remember now but i can remember that those basses are way too expensive. I would like to see something like allparts or mighty mite selling these kind of necks as replacements for the standard models and VERY CHEAP!
One prototype of the fretted/fretless neck was trialled by Steinberger. The XM bass was on Ebay a couple of years ago and eventually purchased by someone from Steinberger world. The general points made earlier about simplicity kind of apply in this case. The more complicated something is, the more potential there is for things to go wrong. With the neck, the refrets could have been nightmarish, I imagine. Also the string height would need to vary when the frets were rolled over to flush or the action would be higher in fretless mode. A rotating zero fret with a half height profile would take care of this at the headpiece end. But at the bridge it would be a lot trickier to achieve. I'll put a hand up for Steve Chick however. Some of the stuff he was showing me with his new synth bass system was remarkable. If Line 6 and other modelling approaches are also considered, it might be that at some point, musical instruments become wholly electronic and simply interfaces for triggering sounds stored somewhere else. Yes the quality of interaction between player and instrument could become less satisfying but if the nuances of touch can be faithfully sensed (as Steve Chick has been working towards) then it would open up a different world where the role played by a musician and their preferred interface is more important than the sounds they actually make...

I'm still looking for a programmable arpeggiator.

Class D have been around and mass produced since Peavey made the DPC line of amps and the 450w Databass combo in the 80's. They're not new tech!!

So, anyone here own, or ever owned, a Bassman 135?
Kiwi replied to Beedster's topic in Amps and Cabs
I was looking for a Bassman a long time ago...ended up with Burman instead. No regrets. -
I have had a few guitars with zero frets and ended up pulling them out on all of them. What advantage do they present?
They set string height at the nut and help with keeping intonation. I don't think there are significant design advances to be had any more, instead I think it's just a question of taste. Headless was about as radical as it got and look how today's market reflects back on those ground breaking ideas. The sliding pickup idea has been around for a while but again, no elegant way to execute it yet. The only significant changes I can anticipate are in the use of new woods given that so many traditional woods are becoming increasingly scarce - Warwick did that with their use of bubinga and wenge. Dingwall have explored pairing cedar and alder with each other in bodies too.
I'd like to have a profile on this site, actually. I imagine it as a less basic version of the Status update we already have. We would be able to have a more easily displayable profile photo, update our status, perhaps post links to our flickr/picasa etc. accounts or publish our photos on the profile (storage/bandwidth of this site's server permitting). For instance, what use are the "friends" we have here? We don't get preferred updates from them, or indeed have any more interaction with them than with all other members. So yes, I'd be in favour of a slightly more complete profile feature on here.
Personally, I like the idea of being more of a social network and continuing to create a safe place to share things with each other. I think the sense of community on BC is one of its core assets and anything we can do to make that stronger is only going to help the community. I'll have a chat with our developer and Chris about it as a longer term goal after the other two forums are set up and establishing.
Some of the forums I frequent have a live Java chatroom. Its a great way to get to know other posters etc. In fact, I met my wife in one dedicated to Dr Who! Any chance of getting one on here?
We looked into that a loooong time ago when the atmosphere was less stable than it was now and...at the time it was going to take a lot of managing and the number of people who actually wanted this feature was quite low. There's no harm in someone starting a poll though and if there's enough demand then we'll look into it. Webcams use will be charged per minute. We also looked into profiles like facebook on here but when we polled on it, most people couldn't be bothered with it given they already had Facebook..Bebo...GooglePlus...Flickr...Instagram...Friendster...Twitter etc. However I think Facebook is becoming increasingly devious with it's privacy controls and can't be trusted. Whether enough members agree yet also remains to be seen...

I started a project, and I wish to share it with you.

Sounds like you might need a blog...have a chat to Dood to see what we can arrange. -
Wow, there we go!

There's definitely some balls out magic going on there. Love how Lee and Anthony are vibing with the drummer. Anthony Jackson is just a giant [s]bass player[/s] musician.

Refretting a defretted neck - any point? hard?
Kiwi replied to Paul S's topic in Repairs and Technical
With a small handsaw it might be possible to chase out the original fret slots. Depending on how wide the slots are, you can find some flat plastic sheeting of some kind to superglue in to keep the fingerboard stable. Old credit cards and ice cream containers have been used in the past. Then just plane and then sand with a radiussed block. -

It used to be on the site, Jon knows this one well,

I get the impression there are two schools of thought within Basschat on what amps should do.

What LukeFRC said, we kind of allow for swapping in the classifieds when people state a trade value.
Don't upload who..?? Dammit!! Sorry...
I had one of those! But with a black and white photo instead.
That is all very true, but i meant that people putting silly comments on a serious question is not always helpful or welcome. It was more if a comment about the attitudes to the forum and perhaps the mental capacity of your average guitarist! I should know! I fully agree that BC is far better moderated than others. Google gives far more conflicting information quoting anyone that wants to write something. Surely that is the point about asking opinions on a forum such as this? I would hope that you are far more likely to get considered answers. I am not against it in principle, i just don't think it necessary when you already have functionality within BC for guitar related discussion.
I understand. I respect your opinion. It's also very clear to us where other guitar forums have been going wrong. Any special interest group is likely to develop its own culture on a forum and for this reason alone, having clarity between one culture and another is a good thing because it allow members to choose where they want to spend their time the most. We intend for there to be a single log in for both sites and the same approach to management will be taken. Members from here should feel free to post a question on guitarchat and expect the same kind of reception and quality of information that they would get here. Anything you have concerns about can be taken up with one of the mods or the admin. The main thing Chris and I hope to achieve is a stable and friendly atmosphere...how that is achieved is as much down to the members as it is how the forum is managed. I hope everyone who has shown an interest on this thread so far will be able to work on that with the admin and I a little more collaboratively, once the forum has been skinned and is running. I hope to run an online...facilitated workshop. Very much along similar lines that I do for my day job. Also, if you help us by being active on the new forum you will also be helping to shape the community!
I have to say that i would agree with Gareth. i am primarily a guitarist who has just come back to playing bass and i have had involvement with general gear and guitar forums. Whilst there are plenty of educated and sensible people on these foums, there is also a proliferation of people who just seem to either give you completely false infomation, post silly and pointless comments and just cause a nuisance.
How many guitar forums have you both visited which are managed like Basschat and are lucky enough to have such a great team of moderators? Re: false information - I'd suggest never take anything at face value. Google is your friend. Re: silly and pointless comments - I suggest that sometimes being silly is the point Re: cause a nuisance - there are block and report functions available on BC
