  1. Don't know how it is for other folk, but most of the stuff that comes up near me is knackered garbage. The only good stuff seems to be miles away. I'd have had this like a shot if it were nearer.
  2. The Fender Mark Hoppus Precision has a Precision neck on a Jazz body, but then it has a P Bass pickup so probably doesn't count.
  3. My Matt Freeman doesn't seem to move, regardless of what the weather does. I went from some skinny D'Addario rounds (.040 to .100) to some heavy Fender flats (.055 to .110) a few weeks ago and expected to have to tweak the neck after a day or two of settling in, but so far I've not had to do anything. A "strong and stable" bass.
  4. For years, I played through an Ashdown ABM300 (Evo II) and found it to be a really nice and versatile amp, however I sold it on when I picked up my Peavey Mark IV as it was more suitable for the band I was playing at the time (heavy, and loud). I'm half tempted to return to the Ashdown fold as there's a good deal on an ABM locally that I quite fancy.
  5. Sage green was an old MIM colour from the early 2000s and wasn't that popular if I recall, but I had a Jazz in that colour and when I sold it 3-4 years ago, folk were going daft for it. Got to say, I really don't like all these variations of Jag bass that don't have the full set of Jag switches and control plates. That big expanse of plastic guard just looks cheap.
  6. That's a nice bit of wood! Never seen black dots and binding on a maple neck before either, I quite like it.
  7. Saw the release video on Fender's Facebook page this morning; this was definitely the standout in the range. I'm a fan of the Tidepool Blue finish as well. Glad they've gone with a different logo to the horrible 70s-style logo that the Mexican Standards have.
  8. Andy bought my p bass pickguard through a Facebook group; he was quick to pay after we agreed the price, top man to deal with!
  9. Apologies if this should be in a different section, but does anyone have any recommendations for learning jazz bass? I listen to it, I understand chord structures, but when it comes to walking baselines and jazz bass in general, to quote the great Danny Dyer, "I just can't get me nut around it". Does anyone have any recommendations for a simpleton like me?
  10. Similar story for me; I bought a bass from Clarky, who bought it from Old Horse Murphy, that I subsequently sold back to OHM, that I wish I hadn't. I often wonder where it is and if it's possible to try and track down.
  11. I bought a set of Fender flats from Tony; quick to reply to messages, posted quickly, as described and keenly priced, can't complain! Thanks again Tony!
  12. I picked up a new Squier Matt Freeman P Bass a couple of weeks ago, and the pots are quite sorry-looking. The bass comes fitted with Alpha mini pots as standard, which I'd like to swap for full sized ones, however there seem to be lots of different options for sizes when I look online. Does anyone know which pots would drop straight in to the existing pickguard? Do mini pots have the same size thread as their larger counterparts, or will the pot holes in the pickguard be too small for full sized pots?
  13. I think @mcnach might be able to help with this one...
  14. I'd swap out the bridge and knobs for chrome, but bear in mind that you'd also need to swap the scratchplate screws and the strap buttons too. It would be cheaper than a new set of tuners though. All-black hardware looks a bit 'metal'. FWIW, the Squier Matt Freeman Precision basses also have a maple cap neck, it's not a common feature.
  15. Does anyone have any experience receiving international bank transfers? A payment was sent to me from Portugal on Friday but hasn't landed in my account yet. Any idea how long it should take?

For future reference, seriously save yourselves a packet and use Transferwise!!!! I’ve used it loads of times. Save you lots of money and time. You can also even set up an electronic invoice automating the task of payment.

+1 for Transferwise. Quick, easy, inexpensive.

  16. Also, it looks a cracker!
  17. I believe the colour is California blue. It looks the same colour as the dismantled Fender P Bass in Tony Bacon’s ‘The Ultimate Guitar Book’.
  18. Most of the VMs I've tried have been the older ones with the satin neck. As stock they weren't that good IMO. Once you start modding a bass it skews the comparison. I never felt the need to mod any of the CVs/MFs that I've owned. I genuinely believe that they're better than MIM Standards as well, maybe not so with some of the higher end Mex Fenders.
  19. In my experience, the VM and CV ranges don't even compare; any VM I've had my hands on has felt cheap and sounded weak, however I've had 4 CV models (bass and guitar) and 2 Matt Freeman Precisions (made by the same factory that make the CVs) and they've all been excellent. As Lozz, great instruments, and not just "for the money".
  20. I used a Squier Matt Freeman Precision for all my recording and gigging for the best part of three years. It’s the only bass I own at the minute. I’ve owned all sorts of Fenders over the years, including American Standards, but the Matt Freeman is the best bass I’ve owned in terms of feel, sound and playability.
  21. I lent a cab to a mate for a one-off gig once, and didn't see it again for about 8 months. He lived about 10 minutes from me, and had said a few times he'd bring it round, but in the end I had to go and get it from him. When I picked it up the front grill was dented and some of the rubber feet were missing (I'd glued four to the side of the cab so it could be stacked upright). I'd also agreed to let another mate use my bass for a couple of gigs that he was filling in for, and it came back with a few dings that weren't there before it went in the van, although nothing truly noteworthy. I've also had my head taken from my band's rehearsal space for a gig once when I hadn't agreed to it; I was even thanked for the loan!
  22. FAO: Fender flatwound users - does the 'fat' part of the E string still wrap around the tuner post? I had some on my P Bass before and remember that the taper started after the string had already met the tuner. Is this still an issue? I was thinking of buying some.

Actually it could have something to do with how the strings are cut, because you need enough windings to get the string leaving the post as near to the headstock as possible for a good break angle over the nut. Same with the A string. It's not ideal to have the 'fat' part of the E round the post, especially flat wounds, but you should be OK with Fender flats, they're fairly robust. I love La Bella flats personally, but they are surprisingly fragile and don't like being messed about.

You could try rewinding the E string and concentrate on having the string leave the post right at the bottom if possible, but if you're not getting any buzzing or other problems with it I'd advise leaving well alone. HTH. :)

I'm coming to the conclusion that flats don't like being cut and I try not to cut them whenever possible. You can get a La Bella onto the E post without cutting it because the 'non-fat' part of the string is quite narrow. But it still takes a bit of planning.

Interesting re flats not liking to be cut because I've had them on and off my telebass number of times when swapping out pickups etc and the end on the D has literally snapped off the length that goes into the post hole, leaving me with less to wrap around the tuner post causing some issues with slipping.

When I have unavoidably needed to cut a flat, I put a blob of superglue on the end, and wait for in to completely dry (obviously) to stop the thing from unravelling. If you cut a flat through the 'fat' part of the string it will definitely unravel. They just don't seem to be as robust as rounds.

Once I held some La Bellas to the fretboard with a capo so I could do some work to the headstock. I should have been less lazy. I was very careful, but somehow the strings got a bit folded and at the fold the steel outer casings came away and the strings were useless. I'd only had them on there for a week, they weren't even anywhere near broken in. I had to bin them and buy some more. What a waste!
