1.
Hi all, While not wishing to copy another thread, I thought I'd ask for some input on an article I'm writing. Basically, I'd be interested to hear about who you consider to be the top 10 bassists of the eighties, the top ten best eighties basslines, top ten best albums (for bass players), best (or most innovative equipment) etc. Just something I'm toying with writing. Thanks! Stu
Pino Palladino and I'm gonna tear your playhouse down.
 2. My '70 CIJ not-for-export Pbass sounds great, though it's thump rather than growl. If he wants growly, wouldn't he be better off looking at a Jazz?
 3. 'Twisted' by Skunk Anansie, because the band want to do it. What a great bass line, plus I get to use my new toy. That Cass Lewis (sp?) was some bass player. If anyone knows him, give him much respect from me!
 4.
If I get forwarded to me one of the malicious "cancelling" emails I suspect the Railway Inn may have been resposible for sending, has anyone any idea how I can reveal the IP address of the PC from which the email was sent?
You will need to examine the full message headers. You are looking for the first address in the chain of Recieved: messages, which will be the last such line as you look down the message and will look something like: Received: from 77-74-8-93.dynamic.dsl.as9105.com (HELO somedodgyperson) ([77.74.8.93]) by smtp.someisp.co.uk with ESMTP; 06 Mar 2008 14:37:28 +0000 in this example, the IP address is 77.74.8.93. For the purposes of this exercise, the IP address has been changed, but you can see that this dodgy person is using someisp as his ISP, and the 'dynamic.dsl' bit indicates that like most users in the world, he's using a DHCP address issued by the ISP. Clearly a work of fiction. This information is competely useless to you unless you can persuade the ISP to tell you who was using that particular IP address at the time the message was sent. I'd be very surprised if anyreputable ISP were prepared to release that to you unless you were a policeman brandishing a court order. This assumes that whoever did the deed used a mail client. It's also possible to send mail without revealing details of the sending IP address and there are plenty of anonymous email services.
I havve some software avaiable to me which will enable me to trace the IP address to a Posal Code, which will suffice for our purposes,
I think it's highly unlikely that software will be any use to you whatsoever, since the IP Address is almost certain to be a DHCP address. I also think it's also pretty unlikely that the people at The Railway would get involved in something like this.

Plus they seem shocked whenever I ask for 30/35 gauge steels.
What is your 'gauge' ? I've got a brand new unused set of light gauge Stainless Steel Elites S35, 35-55-75-95, yours for £7.50 including postage if you want 'em.
 6.
What "bass area" fiasco was that? I can't even remember if I went last year.
The London Guitar Show website has gone (probably in the archive) but I did find this description: As a matter of fact Rotosound is one of the sponsors of this year's LGS – and not only will Rotosound be more visible than ever, but it will also be the godfather of a completely new section-the Bass Studio. The LGS officials stated that the Bass Studio will let you "see all the bass amp manufacturers all together in one place without noise restriction and get to thump those hefty bass strings to your hearts content". Which turned out to be one Markbass rig and one Markbass combo in a very small room round the back of the cafe.
 7.
Its also incorporating the London Drum Show...........
It was already too noisy when it was just guitars. That and last years fiasco over the 'bass area' mean that I won' t be bothering this year.
 8.
Here are my new babies
A shop in Ipswich had one of these for a while, and probably still has it tucked away at the back of the shop somewhere. Hopefully when you open it up you will see loads of nice point-to-point hand wiring and Partridge transformers. There are some schematics for these at www.drtube.com and www.schematicheaven.com This probably had EL34s in it. If they're original '70s ones I hope they're still OK - the KT77s in my Burman guitar combo were completely shot and had to be replaced. The JJ KT77 is a drop-in replacement for an EL34 and will give you a bit more power and IMHO a slightly nicer tone with better highs and lows. You could be taking a big chance replacing an iAmp 800 with these reliability wise though, if that's what you did. At least you've got two of them, so the odds are that at least one will be working at any given time :-)
 9.
I'm aware shipping will likely be costly, I just want to try & work out if it's worth my while doing this or if I should just tell him to bung it in a skip! Jon.
I think anything that is less than $35 in value doesn't attract any customs or duty charges. (it's something like that, though that might not be the exact value).
 10. Just bought some strings from Peter - good communications and everything arrived in good order and well packaged-up. Recommended.

I can't listen to this song without hearing the lyrics as 'Go and get stuffed' . Mondegreens, gotta love 'em.

 13. Thanks guys, there are some good links there. I take the point about flats lasting longer, which is fine once you know that you're going to like them. As far as Webstrings are concerned, I've had a few sets from them now and I can't tell them from D'Addarios. Some of the websites listed in the thread have them pretty close in price too. I think they're better quality than the Roberts - the packaging is certainly nothing like the Roberts brand. Their electric strings are pretty good but i didn't like the phos-bronze acoustic guitar set, they went dead very quickly and appear to be the same as Martin, which aren't very good either. I've just found an old receipt for a set-up from 1986, where I was charged £11.99 by an expensive music shop for a set of Rotosounds, or 12 packets of fags. At roughly £4.50 a pack at todays price, that would suggest we should be paying around £54 a set for Rotosounds, and that's assuming that you get the same number of fags in a packet so Ferret has a point! But that doesn't allow for the disproportionate rise in cigarette tax or the increase in competition and sales volume. On the other hand, I think the cost of basses has fallen in real terms.
 14.
Think? Is that a cross between thick and thin? Or is it simply an unnatural pastime for a drummer?
Aaagh, the spelling police. It's a fair cop guvnor, you got me bang to rights. Sorry, must have been a Freudian slip.
 15.
Yeah, they're called brushes. The drummer I played with when we did "Fame" had to use them because he was drowing out the singers, let alone the rest of the band!
No, not brushes! I meant something like this: http://www.stagebeat.co.uk/index.php?page_id=418 Underneath 'Gorilla Snot'. Indeed.
 16.
Try to rehearse with the volumes as low as possible (this is usually limited by the drummer who can't really turn down !).
+1 for that. Our drummer uses sticks called 'Hot Rods' or 'Lightning Rods' or somesuch, they look like a bundle of very think sticks. Apparently they give the same feel but a lot less volume.
 17.
They've been cut to my Sterling so the G-string won't fit on a jazz-type headstock now, but perhaps someone out there can use them. Any takers at £5 plus (actual) shipping?
I'll take 'em. Please PM me and we'll sort out payment etc.
 18.
http://www.gumtree.com/london/97/18814897.html i recently moved to kirkwall, orkney ,if this isn't a problem for you i can send you some pictures I smell bullshit!
I think you're right to be suspicious. Don't we have any basschatters resident in Orkney who could pop round and check this out? I know a few dive boat skippers but they're not renowned for their expertise in bass guitars (though they've got a highly developed nose for bullshit, to a man!)

 20.
I find it surprising that someone will pay hundreds of pounds for a bass (thousands sometimes), and hundreds for an amp etc, then stick some cheap strings on it, you can get Elites or D'adario for about £13, and Rotosounds are only £10 from Stringbusters.
Please tell me where I can get a set of 'named' flatwounds for that price! The best price I can find is £20 for a set for Elites, Rotosound and Thomastik mid-high 20s. I don't much like Elites, having had a couple of sets which both went dead in a couple of days (and I don't have sweaty hands). It makes it expensive to try things out. Has anyone tried the Webstrings flats from www.webstrings.com ? I've got some roundwounds on a couple of my basses and they seem very good. The only thing that bothers me slightly is that a 45 roundwound seems like a pretty heavy gauge set - am I right in thinking that you need a slightly thinner gauge roundwound string to get the same tension, or doesn't it make much difference?
 21.
Can't be sure that this an SGC Nanyo, but it looks like an SB310 and that BiN price is really very good: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...A:IT&ih=015
I emailed the guy, and he says it is an SGC Nanyo. How can you tell from that picture whether it's a 310 or a 320?
 22. OLP MM3, black with pearloid pickguard and matching headstock. Excellent condition with not a mark on it. I've owned it for about 2 years, before that it passed through the hands of WigfinderGeneral and BassThing68, so a bit of a bassworld bike! This one has the later pattern Ernie Ball style bridge, has recently been set up by a local luthier and has a nearly new set of 45-130 roundwounds. I'm looking for £125 including a decent-quality Black Rat gig bag. Reluctant to ship and would prefer a pickup from Ipswich.
 23. For sale: Aria Pro II RSB Special lined fretless, black body maple neck, rosewood board. I bought this bass second-hand from Northern Sounds in Workington on 7th March 1986 for a then-whopping £225 quid. I still have the receipt. The serial number dates it to 1984 and I guess it was defretted between then and the time I got it, since as far as I know it wasn't available fretless from new. The electrics all work smoothly and without crackle. The neck is very slim and playable, measuring 1.57" at the nut. Considering it's nearly 25 years old it's in very good condition, with 2 significant marks which I've tried to show in the photos. It has a small scratch about 1 cm long on the front of the top horn, through the finish but not through to the wood, and a ding in the top of the body. I'll try and get some pictures up later today, or PM me if you can't wait. I'm looking for £125 for this. There's no case, just a fairly flimsy gig bag, so I'd prefer a pickup from Ipswich area.
