Does anyone know what bass effects Chris Wolstenholme uses on the 3rd verse of City Of Delusion? I'm guessing some kind of envelope filter plus expression pedal/wah, but I haven't really got any idea.

I had one of these (a Vox Wyman) and it was pretty horrible, short scale and sounded dreadful. Hofner Violin bass has a pretty slender neck too, and there are loads of reasonable copies of this around - I saw a very nicely turned out Jay Turser in a local music shop for less than 200 quid. I have a Precision with a Jazz neck on it, which is one option - you can probably find a Jazz neck and it fitted to your existing bass if you're happy with the sound. Some of the Japanese Arias from the early 1980s had very slim necks too. My RSB special is like this, though it's not quite as slim as a jazz. Technique helps. I've got small hands too, and I find it's much easier to put my thumb on the back of the neck than to try and rest the neck in the space between thumb and first finger.

It was recorded in 2004 just before Ron Aspery died and contains some new material as well as some of the old standards. Despite the fact that it says 'stocked by the Bass Centre' on the site, it isn't. In fact the last time I went in there, the staff hadn't heard of Back Door or Colin Hodgkinson.

Hi, I've just stumbled across something called Power Scaling, from London Power [url="http://www.londonpower.com/pscaling.htm"]http://www.londonpower.com/pscaling.htm[/url] I was wondering if this might be the way to tame the awesome power of my Burman Pro 4000 guitar combo. I've been told that things like hotpads won't cope with the output of 100+ Watts, but this technology seems to offer the possibility. Anyone know anything about it?

If you get around to trying it, or to installing Ardour, please post your experiences here since it's bound to be valuable. For an alternative perspective, I have a server here running OpenSolaris, booting off a mirrored zfs file system. Took about 10 minutes to set up the mirroring and it seems to be rock solid. Not tried recording anything on it though. Personally for quality construction I think you have to go a long way to beat the older Sun Microsystems kit. It's almost Burman-like! I do have one mac, an old MacPlus which has been converted into a fish tank. I'll try and find some pictures. We're about to acquire a macbook when leopard is released - I think macs really do have advantages for people who aren't into computers and just want to get stuff done.

I have a BB800 from c. 1979 and was very definitely made in Japan, it has Made In Japan stamped on the heel plate. There is a site somewhere with serial numbers for the various models, though the BB800 dates from the period where the serial numbering was a bit unreliable and uncoordinated.

These have US pickups and better quality wood in the body (ash or alder instead of basswood). Guitar Emporium should have some of these but I don't think you will find them in the Bass Cellar/Centre/Gallery or anyone else in Denmark St.

If I was looking for a HD recorder that will record 8 simultaneous tracks and do all the usual stuff, it seems to me that it'll be hard to beat the Zoom HD 16. Is anybody using one, if so what do you think of it? If you bought something else instead, what did you get and why?

I have one identical to this, except that mine's a lined fretless (and in much better condition). No idea whether mine was a factory fretless or was done after, but I'd have to agree with what Bloodaxe said about the neck. This is a quality piece of kit for £25 quid in my slightly biased opinion! Edit: Make that £28 quid. Someone got a real bargain IMHO.

Instead of PAT stickers, you affix a 'this is new equipment' sticker with the date. Once it's necessary to PAT test something, if the IEC mains lead is tested at the same time as the piece of equipment it plugs into, the lead is given an ID and is certified for 5 years (the same as the piece of equipment that it relates to). An IEC lead by itself, not associated with a piece of equipment, is only in-test for a period of 12 months until it is done again. If you have something like a wall wart or a laptop-type DC power supply, it can't be PAT tested. The best the sparkies can do is append a visual inspection sticker.

Do you know of anyone near you who has a Line 6 Variax bass? Since that doesn't have any conventional pickups, it shouldn't have any shielding problems. If you plug one of those in and it hums, I think it would be a good pointer to the amp being faulty. I recently managed to solve a similar problem with inductive loops.

Thanks for all the replies and sorry that this took me a while - couldn't find the vernier :-( The neck is 2.54 inches at its widest part. The pocket is 2.52 inches at its widest part. The rest of the routing on this body is nothing special and will need some more work, though it'll be covered up by scratchplate and fitting a different bridge P/U. Given that, and that the body is nothing special, I'm inclined to follow Paul_C's suggestion. At least that way if I cock it up, I've still got a pristine neck and all I need to do is find another body.

Its not easy without a phone number or email address. We have written to the postal address (just round the corner from the police station!) but there's no guarantee that it isn't a false name/address/bank account.

Another endorsement for John at Far East Guitars. I got my CIJ Precision from him. Nice bloke to deal with. I notice though that he's not bringing in a lot of stock at the moment. I haven't dealt with them, but others on the forum have found them to be helpful and efficient.
