1.
' Finally a possible bargain a 1983 RSB Special-I in my favourite colour, currently awaiting an opening bid above £25. I've already got one & they're little crackers - perfect beaters & a very slick neck. Pete.
Someone's gone for it. I have one identical to this, except that mine's a lined fretless (and in much better condition). No idea whether mine was a factory fretless or was done after, but I'd have to agree with what Bloodaxe said about the neck. This is a quality piece of kit for £25 quid in my slightly biased opinion! Edit: Make that £28 quid. Someone got a real bargain IMHO.
  2.
A good and cheap option is to just buy new IEC leads (where apropriate) as you can buy them bulk fairly cheaply. Keep the receipt as I belive as long as it less than 12 months old it is expempt, I could be wrong but it makes sense!
Any piece of equipment doesn't need to be PAT tested until it is more than 12 months old. Instead of PAT stickers, you affix a 'this is new equipment' sticker with the date. Once it's necessary to PAT test something, if the IEC mains lead is tested at the same time as the piece of equipment it plugs into, the lead is given an ID and is certified for 5 years (the same as the piece of equipment that it relates to). An IEC lead by itself, not associated with a piece of equipment, is only in-test for a period of 12 months until it is done again. If you have something like a wall wart or a laptop-type DC power supply, it can't be PAT tested. The best the sparkies can do is append a visual inspection sticker.
  3.
Have you tried the OLP musicman copies? I don't know what difference there is in string spacing between them and musicmans (musicmen?) but mine's really comfortable and the string spacing is fine in my opinion.
Mine too, but then I have small hands!. The string spacing on my MM3 is 17mm at the bridge.
  4.
I'm sceptical about the shielding thing, but the troubleshoot is a two-way process so I'm going to do as they ask to take it out of the equation. If it works.. great.
I think you're right to be sceptical. At least it demonstrates to Genz that you're doing everything that you can do. Do you know of anyone near you who has a Line 6 Variax bass? Since that doesn't have any conventional pickups, it shouldn't have any shielding problems. If you plug one of those in and it hums, I think it would be a good pointer to the amp being faulty. I recently managed to solve a similar problem with inductive loops.
  5. Thanks for all the replies and sorry that this took me a while - couldn't find the vernier :-( The neck is 2.54 inches at its widest part. The pocket is 2.52 inches at its widest part. The rest of the routing on this body is nothing special and will need some more work, though it'll be covered up by scratchplate and fitting a different bridge P/U. Given that, and that the body is nothing special, I'm inclined to follow Paul_C's suggestion. At least that way if I cock it up, I've still got a pristine neck and all I need to do is find another body.
  6. Its not easy without a phone number or email address. We have written to the postal address (just round the corner from the police station!) but there's no guarantee that it isn't a false name/address/bank account.
  7. Another endorsement for John at Far East Guitars. I got my CIJ Precision from him. Nice bloke to deal with. I notice though that he's not bringing in a lot of stock at the moment. Another possibility is to import yourself from Ishibashi. Go to http://www.ishibashi.co.jp/u_box for their used stock. I haven't dealt with them, but others on the forum have found them to be helpful and efficient.
  8. A week further on - we've still had no contact. I contacted 10 of the buyers of the various items. 8 replied - none had had any contact from the seller, and at least 4 had also paid over money for no goods. The Ebay account is delisted, user's feedback -4 none of which is particularly complimentary, some of which wouldn't get past the Mylene Klass filter. I expect he'll pop up again like a whack-a-mole somewhere else. Several of the buyers have contacted the police, not that they will do anything. We've contacted the bank but I'm not very optimistic there either. I was away when Mrs PY made the payment otherwise I might have smelt a rat, but it still goes to show that even experienced ebayers can get caught occasionally. Be careful out there.
  9. Could someone point me to the terms and conditions presented at sign-up? (Perhaps we could have a sticky if we don't have one already, like we had at bassworld?)
  10.
Those who have been affected, have you been clicking links on google just before it changed?
If you mean the links on the google ads, then no - it happened to me back in July before the google ads appeared. If you mean just generally doing google searches whilst still browsing basschat, then I can't recall but it's highly likely I did!
  11. Hi Lex. Good question. I'll see if I can find the digital calipers and do a bit of measuring.
  12. Dudes, Quick heads-up . My son bid on a pedal sold by ladeprub . We sent payment through bank transfer to the account of the ebayer (PM me for the name and address that was given) who gave an address in Renfrewshire on August 9th. If anyone has any ideas how I can confirm that the address that was given to me is actually realated to this virus I will be grateful! Since then, nothing. Zip.Nada. No response. No pedal. Rip off city. If anyone in the Lochwinnoch area is reading this and owns a baseball bat, let me know. Everyone else, keep well clear of this piece of sh1te, whatever name on ebay he's now using to scam people it may well point back to the same name and address.
  13. Amongst the pile of bits that I'm slowly assembling into a bass, I have a Mighty Mite Jazz neck, unmolested, and a routed body acquired from someone on Bassworld ages ago. The neck is slightly too big for the pocket, and needs to be made to fit. What is the best way to proceed, sand the neck heel until it fits the body, or open out the pocket until it fits the neck? The routing on the body is not great so I'm inclined to suspect this is the problem.

  15.
In the meantime I'm tempted to download every diagram I can lay my hands on and burn it all to disc while I have the chance!
That's why I suggested wget - it's a handy little program for copying stuff from A to B. Amongst other things, it can be used to take a complete copy of all or part of a web site. There are probably other Windows programs with point-and-click type windows interfaces , maybe someone else can recommend a web-site cloning program that is a bit easier to use. wget is a gnarly command-line thing but I know that it works!
  16. If you go to the wayback machine http://www.archive.org/ there are plenty of hits. If you go to the low bandwidth version the articles are still there - not sure what point the switch-off occurred but it was before May 9th this year and after Feb 20th. Point wget at the URL and get your own copy.
  17.
If I was buying a Jazz, I'd buy a Japanese Reissue.
+1 for that.
  18.
Five switches for just over four quid shipped, difficult to argue with that.
That's very cheap. On reflection I'll see if I can find a black one, to match the rest of the hardware.
As for circuit diagrams, I used a combination of these two diagrams:
Smart. Thanks very much for this info.
  19. The book is published by Hal Leonard and was written by the even more improbably-named Chris Kringel ! http://www.elderly.com/books/items/49-695850.htm . Someone on amazon has it for 7 quid - I think for that price I'll take a punt on it .
  20.
End result - the bass sounds much better than it did! In parallel mode, it sounds just like it did before, except now I have full control over the volume without fumbling or hum. The series mode has a little more volume and has a nice midrangey quality which works well for fingerstyle. I think everyone who owns one of these OLP passive basses should consider this mod... it costs practically nothing and makes the bass much, much more versatile!
What a good idea. I've had problems getting rid of the 'hum' too. Do you have a circuit diagram? If you have any spare switches I'll take off your hands - PM me and let me know how much you want for it. Kind regards, Pete
  21. Can anyone tell me where I can find dots and/or tab for Pino Palladino's bass part to Paul Young's version of 'I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down' ? I've got most of it from a video on youtube, but there are still a few details I can't quite get my head round. Google tells me that there's a Hal Leonard book about Fretless Bass which includes an arrangement, but I don't know if it's Pino's, or how accurate it is.
  22.
MB1. Damn now thats got me what was the name of the girl who played the guitar?, MB1.
I think it was Deirdre Cartwright. What do I win?

Thanks Phatmonkey. According to the bug reports, it is intended behaviour! Riight. I think it's actually showing the time of the server, so I guess it could be argued that it's the server which isn't doing the right thing DST wise. Oh well. Reminds me of the happy hours spent trying to work out why 'BST' was always 9 hours ahead, until I discovered that that particular (US) vendor assumed it stood for 'Bangladeshi Standard Time'.
I'll have a look at this in the evening when I have some. So I can make comparisons, can everybody please post here saying whether they are having troubles with the time or not when it is set to the correct time zone in board settings (GMT for most of us) and auto DST is switched on. Thanks.
I have GMT set and auto DST switched on. When I log in, the time is correct (BST). When I log out, the time is one hour behind (GMT). No way I'm going to be posting to Basschat before 7.00 am! Kind regards, Pete
  25. Very stylish. Excellent job. Also works well on Solaris 10 (Mozilla and Firefox).
