I'm in full agreement with Oxblood, and until I stumbled across this thread I couldn't understand why 'bass' in one of my postings was being scrambled into something else. The sad fact, as someone employed to evaluate and write profanity and porn filters at one point in my career is that they can't be guaranteed to work and can always be circumvented. There is nothing to be gained from going down this route, and much to be lost. It also seems odd that none of you appear to know any 12-year-olds, or know what kind of vocabulary they are able to routinely deploy.

I have a jazz body bought from someone on bassworld which is an OK plank but the pickup routing is abysmal. The neck pu will be OK because I can fit a scratchplate, but the bridge one is horrendous, the bumps are in the wrong place and the slot isn't wide enough. If I fit a Seymour Duncan MM pickup or a Wizard combo set I reckon that will give me a way to use the body, but it'll mean re-routing the cavity and making a template. I've got loads of 5mm acrylic and reasonable fitting skills so I'm reasonably confident that I can make a decent set of templates up. Question is, how much space do I need to leave around the outline of the pickup cover to make sure that the hole is the right size? It's quite critical for the bridge pickup. I was thinking along the lines of the pickup plus the thickness of the router guide sleeve. Someone must have done this. What are the pitfalls? How much clearance do I need?

This after much thought, premeditation, etc - at the time I couldn't play guitar, but I wanted to learn. A few hours later I walked out of the shop with a £200 second-hand Fylde, and a 2-year finance deal for £10 a month. At the time this was about 10% of my wages. 30 years later, I've still got that guitar. It's one of my prized possessions and I still play it every week, if not every day. In fact I think I'll go and have a burst on it now. It's a very different world now though. I can't believe the amount of debt that today's students are taking on. If it had been like that I'd certainly never have gone to university, and i guess neither would warwickhunt! The shop BTW was Sounds Acoustic in Chester Rd Manchester, next door to Muir Music. Some of the old-timers from the North-West might remember. Muir Music was the Burman stockist, but that's another story for another day!

Thank you. Not sure why I thought it was 4 weeks, maybe I was talking to someone who had negotiated a different reference period. Gentlemen, thank you for your excellent advice which I intend to take. I'll leave it as it is for now. Sticking a 10" in it would require building a new front panel, which I'll consider if the original driver gives up the ghost.

At this point, I'll probably have to own up to wanting to do something that is frowned upon, if not beyond the pale. I have an old HH Bass Baby 15" cab, which is very well made, nice and compact if I didn't want to carry bigger and heavier cabs, but only rated at 100W. It goes against the grain to accidently damage the driver by shoving too much power through it, and I was thinking about putting a more highly rated driver into it. The cab is sealed and the volume is about 45l, probably way too small for a 15" driver by Bill's reckoning . But it doesn't sound too bad at low volumes with the existing unbranded driver. The sensible thing is probably to get rid of it, but I don't imagine it's worth a lot and I've grown rather fond of it over the years.

Something doesn't seem to add up here. Finally I'm beginning to understand what Bill means when he says that designs don't specify big enough cabinets for the driver parameters. So in order to get the optimum bass response, you need a cabinet volume equivalent to the VAS ? It can't be that simple, surely.

The Delta Lites are easier to get hold of, but are 8 Ohm rather than 4 Ohm which is what I would have preferred. As far as importing it goes, Eminence UK were actually quite helpful, happy to have Eminence US stick one on the next shipment provided I went through one of the dealers, their suggestion being blue aran. usspeakers.com sell the basslite for $99 , plus $66 shipping, 3.9% tax, 17.5% vat, handling fee, it's starting to get expensive! What a great country we live in.

The Eminence Basslite C2515 seems just about ideal for a small reconing project that I have in mind. 300W 4 Ohms and very light weight. In the interests of balanced reporting ... I'm not going to comment on the cabs, but I'd avoid the amps like the plague. My son bought one (despite me telling him not to!) and I'm less than impressed. It is incredibly noisy (loud hiss, not mains hum) and unbelievably cheaply made - pots soldered straight on to the PCB, etc. He was lifting it out of the car one day and just snagged one of the tone controls, and the knob flew off, having sheared the pot shaft clean off. This time we got lucky with superglue, but these things are so fragile that they shouldn't be taken out of the house.

Count the number of turns and divide it by the length of the threaded portion of the screw. If it's a very small diameter screw with a fine thread, an overhead projector sometimes comes in handy to blow up the picture. If you can measure the external diameter, you can usually also work out the minor diameter (the diameter of the root of the thread). With OD, minor diameter and pitch it should be possible for anyone who knows about screw threads to identify the thread.

My Burman guitar combo has exactly the same transformers as my Burman bass head, and they both definitly cut it when it comes to 5 string basses. Generalise at your own risk. One of the people who doesn't seem to have found his way here from basstalk is alexclaber . That's a damn shame, not least because I'm trying to find the software which models cabinet performance for various driver dimensions. Alex posted about this on more than one occasion. I've been looking for the posts on basstalk but I can't find anything useful. Can anyone else point me in the right direction?
