Rick Beato gets all uppity about “Yacht Rock”…
spencer.b replied to TrevorR's topic in General Discussion
I got shown those yacht rock vids I reckon at least 15 years ago by my mates who were in indie bands who definitely didn't appreciate the music , for them it was a sneering derogatory take on the music focused on superficial aspects of it like the dated keyboard sounds and moustaches etc, I thought it was vaguely amusing but I've never been very cool and even at the time had an appreciation of that mix of sophisticated harmony , funk rhythms and rock guitar, I get that now it is a bit more of an appreciative take what with taches , mullets and dodgy keys sounds having come back around into the mainstream but I'm actually with Rick on this and agree they've lumped together a disparate collection of artists to suit their narrative- 74 replies

I've got some berg hd's which I love but they're very heavy so the last few years I've been trying lighter cabs ( still got the HDs) Had a pair of Aguilar sl112s , not for me , loud but all snarling midrange , next I got barefaced 210s , loads of volume and good low end but for me they lacked punch , I'd always end up dialing in lots of low mid but compared to a cab with ceramic drivers had a hollow quality , didn't keep them long Next a vanderkley 410lnt , great cab , so much power and low end extension, great for those gigs like a marquee wedding with a crap PA when you end up having to fill the space with your amp , it's actually not as hifi sounding as I thought, I bought it to use with an active 5 string which I think is the tone is does best but with an old p bass with flats it sounds way better than I thought , still got it The other week a bergantino HDN 212 came up on here silly cheap so I got it and wow , little more old fashioned sounding than the vanderkley but a fair bit lighter and still super loud , in terms of mid range it's the best neo cab I've heard but if I'm recording I still probably use a bergantino hd112 Re. what the OP said about the new markbass cabs , think they're some sort of composite ( some in talkbass say cardboard!) I'm intrigued to try them , there's three models I think, Pure, Energy and P all voiced differently Having got all these fancy cabs they're great but I wouldn't turn my nose up at a pair of markbass 102 travellers TBF , great value, pretty light , loud enough and being modular could save your back if you can be arsed to do an extra trip

For some reason this thread came to mind when I just saw a Shuker 5 string in the classifieds , £1100 for a gorgeous bass hand built by one of the UKs top luthiers , probably could pick it up within days !!!

I've left basses in hotel rooms loads over the years , never had a problem

Such a shame more city centre venue's don't get house backline and drum kit , played here a few years ago and it was rowdy but fun but the load in and parking was a total ballache

Natural gut strings. When to change?
spencer.b replied to Paddy Morris's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I've had a plain gut lenzner G on bass for years , if it sounds good I'd leave it -
I've sold vintage basses but only cos I'd fallen out of love with them , currently using an all original old p for all my gigs , even sh!tty bar gigs , I justified buying it by saying to myself I'd never leave it home cos it was too valuable, if it picks up another ding then so be it , don't fly with it mind you , fair play to the OP for selling up cos of the burden , I get that but what I don't get is never gigging them but keeping valuable instruments

I know MIJ is made in Japan, I assume CIJ is crafted in Japan, does this refer to a specific period of Japanese fenders? What's JMJ?

I really rate sire V7s for the money and way more versatile than a stingray , I'm not really a stingray guy but based on some of the comments on here maybe it's worth upgrading the pre amp in the sterling to get closer to the musicman tone ?

I can see that the fender rumble is all wrong for you, how about a gallien Krueger rb700 head , great for sparkly high end , into a vanderkley cab maybe , very expensive but super accurate and open sounding

I had it on done on a p bass and it transformed it , think changing the break angle over the saddles made it way more resonant

I don't know where that seller would of got that info from, there's a lot of conflicting information online for these basses and I can see an older advert also stating 65-68 but all the legit historys I've seen of Kay instruments don't back this up,the Teisco era kays do have serial numbers but I don't think they can be dated from them as they didn't keep records , a 1965 Kay would be a US made speed bump pickup bass and be worth closer to a grand , your bass is a Taiwanese made Teisco bass , I'm not trying to start an argument or rubbish your bass , looks great and a good price I've got a 1938 Kay upright and a few 60s US Kay bass guitars and have geeked out on Kays for a while but if anyone had one back in the day or has any more info I'm happy to be proved wrong on this https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kay_Musical_Instrument_Company#:~:text=Early history (1890–1931),-Products by Stromberg&text=The Kay Musical Instrument Company, and renamed to Stromberg-Voisinet. https://wesleyguitars.co.uk/2014/03/31/kay-k-20b-bass-guitar-short-scale-rickenbacker-4001-1970s-teisco/

Surprised epiphone are going for a pantera sig! TBF I don't know if rex is still in the band? Great band though, huge groove for a metal band IMO I don't wear my t shirts anymore though https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/jan/26/pantera-shows-cancelled-after-frontmans-nazi-salute-prompts-fan-backlash

Excuse my ignorance but is the profiling thing on bass about going ampless? I get it if it's IEMs and I get it for guitar but a lot of gigs the bass is a DI going foh in front of the amp , sometimes a mic' d or a DI from the amp but IME often not even on big stages with an SVT So would a bassist with a kemper give the engineer an out and get it back in the wedge and the kemper signal go FOH ?

Looks like he uses a Fodera PJ with Aguilar pups
