Have I killed my cab ?, I've only myself to blame
spencer.b replied to spencer.b's topic in General Discussion
I was thinking whether it was worth taking to my repair guy or just binning it tbh , I could take it apart but wouldn't be sure what I was looking for in terms of diagnosis -
Gig yesterday, horrible load in so I took my little EA wizzy 10 thinking I'd let the PA do the heavy lifting, PA was awful so just used the amp , I normally use the wizzy for double bass and this was on electric, used a powerful head and turned up and up and in the last song it stopped working completely, head is fine , what do you guys reckon is wrong with it?

I get that bit but I wonder would anyone then buy the item when it's back to the original price ? There was a bass on here I liked and it was a one weekend only special price, I said I'd take it but the seller replied it would have to be at the original price so I declined even though I reckon I would have bought it at the original price had it not been temporarily reduced cos it was what I wanted at a fair price, a week later he offered it at the reduced price and I bought it , I guess it says more about my own misguided notions of value and a good deal and he was a really nice guy and the bass is killer but it certainly didn't work in the seller's favour

I agree that it doesn't help a sale , the one I find strange is the price reduction for this week /weekend/day only, can you ever go back??

If you want old school jamerson tones with a bit of clank ,labellas or pyramid gold , for a smooth pino vibe then thomastiks, I've got basses with both , I would say the thomastiks are easier to play but I've found they're too low tension for some basses

I think click on a gig has it's place , most of the "feel" comes from the subdivisions anyway( some interesting stuff on the spaven mullarkey sbl vid) , those gospel chops drum cam vids when you can hear the click are an example of this, don't get me wrong there's loads of gigs where I wouldn't want it but the OPs setting of pop medleys seems appropriate to me , I sometimes feel less engaged emotionally playing with click and track on ears but maybe that's fine too and about accuracy and groove as opposed to vibe and energy

Second hand market private sale / professional shop seller PRICE
spencer.b replied to J66Bass's topic in General Discussion
I normally wouldn't be bothered but I must admit I recently saw a very nice bass on here 2nd hand and the seller said he was selling for what he paid from BD 2nd hand plus setup costs and tbh I did think hmm that's not how it works is it ? I did seem like a fair price though and you can charge what you want but I wouldn't have put that in the ad!! -
Just listened to it, caught me out 1st time , I assumed the big chord was on beat one but when the drums came in realised it's on the "and" or offbeat or quaver or anticipated Tap your foot with the big strum on the up and count the beats out loud(and 1 and 2 etc), you'll get it

You're in the majority on here mate , it surprises me how much chat on here is about gear and how little about technique , transcriptions etc

Chris showing us how to break the fretless playing mold.
spencer.b replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
Interesting point, he's an upright player first so I guess it's more similar to that approach, btw it's Christian , never seen him called Chris -

Confused noob in need of some reason. (Or help with setup.)
spencer.b replied to Viperpunk's topic in General Discussion
Yep as the others have said you need more relief in the neck, personally I'd take it to a pro to do -
Can you a get a 35 or 36 inch 4 string?

What bass you playing?

Tommy Cogbill is my all time favourite, lays it down and keeps it simple sometimes when needed and is brave and bold at times(he was a jazz guitar player too), like the outro of preacher man when he starts a bar with 6565 etc Check these out , pick solo on moving on is outrageous and gentle on my mind is a melodic masterpiece IMO

Does it sound balanced acoustically?

I've heard they're a nightmare with this stuff before , apparently they won't sell their proprietary drivers either , do they think people will make fake MB cabs !!!

Travelling with a bass guitar in a roof box
spencer.b replied to DylanB's topic in General Discussion
Think it was pretty common place, I've heard a few older guys talk about putting their uprights on the roof, pre 80s vast majority of cars were saloons so without a band van I guess it had to go on the roof I've got an Octavia hatch and can just fit a mono gigbag straight across the very back of the boot -
I played an ultra jazz V at a shop a few months ago and the g was right on the very edge of the board , shocking QC for £2249
