1. The subtle groove on this just gets right under the skin...Q Mr Al Green. https://www.youtube....t=RDDpAbAFJ4MJI mmm...
2. saw him doing a 3 piece jazz gig with the blue J bass at a little village food festival a few years ago...pouring with rain and wearing a bright orange kagool! lol, but what a groovy fellow he is, they sounded amazing, tight and funky, kinda Yellowjackets style..
3. arent engineers just trying to recreate the mush on the record. To me the bass in most modern recordings is just that...mush. Oh for the clarity of recordings from the late 70's, early eighties...
4.
Because playing bass generally is in popular music! To play as a band I find Sweet Home Alabama is a trickier one for us, if the fills and some of the fiddley tiddley bits (techincal terms being used here) arent timed well it sounds bloody awful.
Could'nt agree more. It's one of those tunes which you think needs more but it absolutely does'nt. Has to be the most boring bass line ever. Great tune though.
5. I'm not surprised by any of this, what a mess. eg: The neck on my cheapo VM Indonesion P is incredible with perfectly finished frets and a finish and straightness which I have'nt seen for along time on anything. Even the thickness of the headstock is a lot thinner and better proportioned than my 70's P headstock. The whole thing is a lightweight too with much better sustain than my 70's P which in itself is a nice instrument. It really makes you wonder what your paying for in the US models. I wonder if the suits at FMIC ever check the current crop of Asian models. Reckon they need to.
6. Agree with the US models being generally lighter and also the body contours seem to be sanded smoother......they just feel nicer.
7. My VM P/J bass is absolutely fantastic, definitely a keeper....great Jaco burp from the bridge PU. I compared it to a MexP and an Affinity P in the shop and it was no contest. My VM was lighter than both, more resonant and fit and finish is damn near perfect. Even the shopowner seemed impressed, it was a big box store and he simply pulled it out of a rack, boxed and sealed from the factory. Find a good one like mine and you will never look back. Superb instruments.
8. Looks more or less spot on, very pretty. To check the body take the cover off, bridge will be fitted to far back with extra long G string adjuster. I think they fixed this in about 73/74 Neck looks good but as others have said you need to take it off to be sure and dont worry if there are no markings I've seen several which are bare including my own 71 which is a real thumper!
9.
Juliette Lewis had a band called Juliette & The Licks who were a really solid rock n roll band. Dave Grohl even played drums on their third album.
+1 pretty talented from what I've seen.
10.
Last night was brutal. Everything that could go wrong did and I will not go into detail, but the guitar player being tuned to concert pitch (we tune a half step down) set up the night from the off, as our opening number sounded like a bag of spanners falling down a stairs. on Friday night we played a dingy rock bar in a small town here in the west of Ireland and it was a great gig. the band played really well, but last night.....enough said.
hilarious..I cant imagine how that must have sounded, very funny..
11. Sweet home alabama.. Not a tune you can muck about on it really ..goodness knows Ive tried over the years but seems it has to be played oh so simply. Great song but bass wise sooooo......boring
12.
Carol Kaye for me. I love this insanely busy line with its gorgeous muted/picked tone:
+1 Carol Kaye for starting it all but more than that she was an amazing musician..and check out the Kojak theme too for smooth but musical buseeness and then Suzi Quattro for simply doing the guy thing when giwls didnt do that sort of stuff.
13. All the excellent above...especially the "being polite" stuff.. PLUS You will feel very exposed, ha you'll even be able to se ur band mates in action for the first time but it will be fine and great fun. Don't worry too much about "your sound" as it will all sound very strange on such a big stage especially if the monitor balance is out of whack. And most important of all... 50% of the crowd will be wishing they were up there with you so.... Be a wannabee!! Dress cool, play cool, look cool, your the one who's up there not the crowd so make the most of it..it's your show.
14.
. . Most of The Rezilos, especially 'Top of the pops' . .
and Love Song too. And with hard hat firmly jammed on head....punk only covers stuff from 76 to about 80..anything later is...well.. just kinda pseudo punk... meh
15. 1978. Deni Deni, never did figure the spelling! I'm a green 17 year old, its a dark nite club we cleared the floor and Debs the lead singer who was in her mid twenties I think wore fishnets, a white blokes shirt, heels and not much else.....a gig I will never forget! ha
16.
another great soul record tragically sampled by idiots.
++1
17.
In my experience, the smaller the kit, the better the drummer!
charlie watts.
18. Just bought a new Squire VM P bass but I cant get on with the light weight 45-100 rounds..so would ideally like to swap them for a set of used or newish heavy gauge nickel rounds ie 50-105's or likewise happy to sell. Show me what you've got going spare Price includes p&p Cheers ian
19.
Vastly underrated player, he obviously knows the fretboard inside out which you can see when he fills. I think even his playing on 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is brilliant, not exactly flashy or overly technical but extremely melodic and tasteful!
++1 a guy who definitely knew his stuff, a very good player indeed.
20. Just picked up a new Squire Vintage Modified P/J precision bass cause Ive always wanted a jazz bass but could never get on with that weird offset body mallarky and narrow nut! This bass, and I stress... for the money is astonishing. Its light weight, the frets and tinted neck are smooth and nicely finished. The controls are weighty and smooth and the sound from the bridge PU is full on Jaco loveliness, in fact Im pretty sure the guy in the store who was behind a couple of racks thought i was playing a Thumb bass or something cause he seemed genuinely amazed at the tone I was squeezing out of it. Its a very nice bass.
21. And just to be controversial.. Worst bass for me was my 77 Stingray. No way you say? Yep. It was sooo heavy... gawd I could just about pick it up and that awful three bolt/tilt adjustment maple neck never seemed right somehow, I was always looking at it and fiddling with it. And the sound. I got it in 1979 just when a lot of pop bands were using a Jaco-ish type of bass sound, Duran, Thomson Twins et al but could I get that poppy hard grinding middletone out of it, not at all. Hopeless! In complete contrast is my battered 71 P which never needs tweaking, feels like an old pair of trainers and sounds wonderfully thick, woody and grindy..brill.
22. Struth your tort is dead on. If you want absolute perfection the black filling ought to be quite thin and not as thick...still nevertheless these are the best torties currently on the planet in my view..bravo.
23. Fiddling with the head is fun but at the end of day your tone is all in ur fingers......is'nt it?
