1.
Easy? I had a similar conversation with my Grandson a few weeks ago, so I gave him this to play along with using my short scale bass. He eventually did it all the way through admitting that he was exhausted at the end. His other comment? "Not easy Grandad. You can't stop. You've got to be spot-on and disciplined, haven't you?" I smiled........
Lovely anecdote Jazz...Funny how you forget how few breaks the bass gets in many tunes..whilst all the other intruments except drums maybe will usually get a chance to stop now and again for a breather..
2. I'm not surprised at the attitude of some retailers. You've got to see all of this from their point of view. Can you imagine running a green grocers with customers coming in and trying the fruit leaving apples, oranges and bananas left half eaten on the side.....I know that sounds ridiculous but the analogy kinda stacks up. Its Saturday afternoon and a group of spotty youf walk in and one grabs a brand new 1500 quid bass of the wall and starts hammering on it, and yes and he's wearing a buckle, and a fashion jacket covered in bits and bobs, and you just know he ain't gonna buy that thing. I can only imagine it must be a a very difficult balancing act running a music shop where you have to let customers try things which at the end of the day need to be sold, and trying to keep your stock in tiptop condition.
3. Ha..he's just great is'nt he.. I saw him in a funky three piece electric jazz trio at a little food festival in Emsworth Hants a few years ago can you beleive. It was pouring with rain and they were wearing those transparent coloured rain smocks...lol but what a groove!!. I remember looking around the crowd and wanting to shout out..... people that's Herbie Flowers playing that lovely old blue jazz bass!!...guess I was just a little bit in awe. Wonder if his electrics got a bit wet. Ha!
4. It was those sparse, gentle single notes he played on Phil Collins.. Cannot Believe Its True that got my attention. What an amazing touch..I still play it now just so I can study the way the notes fall....Incredible musician.
5.
This is what it's all about. There's this whole Zen thing of the P-bass; because it doesn't jump out of the mix it allows you to play more complicated lines and stay in the pocket. So a simpler setup can mean more technical playing. But ultimately, it just works. I wish I'd discovered this years ago, and not got caught up with basses that constantly shout "LISTEN TO ME! LISTEN TO ME!"- cutting through the mix like a needy child... The P is just cool and it knows it.
+1

8. ae722a21f425d39
That's probably because the sound engineer has a set idea of what bass should sound like and has no idea what sound you're actually after. We have our own sound person when we're supplying the PA, but if it's a venue provided one, the first thing we do is buy the sound person a drink and make friends. We've yet to find one that doesn't give us the sound we want once we've done that.
Boy was the bass loud and over fat, can't imagine anyone not noticing. Surely it would have been better for the guy to have run everything flat, that way the individual traits of each bass would have been clearer. Seems to me he just whacked the lower mids and bass right round the dial.....ouch!
9. Watched a few bands at a large summer show today in Portsmouth with a good size PA using a desk tent in the middle of the field. The thing I noticed was every bass guitar, including P's, J's L/Pauls, SG's, Arias etc tonally all sounded the same, not to mention loud and bloated, ha I nearly had a word but thought better of it....can you imagine the commotion that would have caused.... But Is'nt it amazing how the sound out front if not handled with sensitivity can completely negate any fiddling we do with guitar preferences, pickups or strings etc. We truly are at the mercy of the guy on the twiddly bits.
10. Hi everyone, I used to post ages ago but life etc kinda took over. I hope you dont mind me resurrecting this old thread, but all this talk about worn in basses like the Pino etc has got me bursting with a few thoughts I bought a RW jazz two years ago and was very impressed by its playability, feel etc, and from what I have gleaned reading this and that is that all these "worn" models, whether Mex of CS have slightly smaller dimensions. My Jazz's body was definitely thinner than any other Jazz I had played and coupled with all the wear etc really made it feel kinda soft and organic..... Anway it had to go cause the neck seemed a bit weak even with light strings..the string height kept moving which I could not do anything about. note
11.
I've got a Custom Shop Relic '64 Jazz Bass with the Brazilian Rosewood 'board. It's amongst the best 'new' bass I have ever played. I was thinking of offloading her but decided to withdraw it as I don't think I would get another as nice without going for a real pre CBS Jazz - now, if anyone has one they are looking to part with......... And a few pics to boot:
Mmm..interesting. For a "custom shop" jazz with its corresponding price tag Id say for my money that one has..... issues? Firstly that low E looks way off the finger board edge and the pickguard looks nothing like an original. I remember when I tried my Road Worn there was a CS next to it and it honestly felt quite a bit heavier than the RW. I know I keep going on about the RW series but mine is an exceptional bass, and Ive tried a few over the years. StilI I can understand why the CS shops models appeal.
12. Must say I love mine, and as I've already mentioned in another thread the bodies and headstocks are thinner than standard, maybe thats why they lack a touch of low end. In fact I swear my bridge pickup is'nt far off the Jaco tone...can be incredibly burby and tight.
13.
Haha, genius!
Ha..yes.I wonder if Fender will bring out a de-reliced relic..lol, or this just getting too weird.
14.
As far as I know, it`s only the finish thats the difference between the RW and the Classic 50s. I had a Classic 50s for a while - really great basses.
Hi all I think its a bit more than that. My RW jazz has a thinner body than any of the production line USA, MIM, or Jap J basses and the headstock is a lot thinner too. The bass feels much more user friendly and if you like, more serious as an instrument compared to the above and I have owned a few over the years.... They are very fine basses indeed once you get past the crummy relicing thing, which looks nothing like the mojo on my vintage P bass. One thing Ive done to improve matters is to polish the whole lot to a shine..looks much better I think. And I may even de-relic the thing one day...we'll see.
15. Fender are a funny outfit IMO. My new RW Jazz quite simply shoves the whole mix and matched lot of fours at least into a cocked hat. I think these basses are Fenders dirty... (literally, scuffs dings etc lol).... secret, and I reckon if they built them as NOS they would outsell all other variants. My example is thinner, lighter, more resonant than any other Fender I have ever played, and that includes my own 71 P which up until now wasnt that bad at all. It sure is a funny way to sell guitars. Build a line which is superbly built and set up, beat it up and then sell it knowing most buyers wont buy into the relicing crap even though it will mechanically and sonically outshine all other models...very strange indeed.
16. Georgous, absolutely spot on..
17.
The AV series doesn't have any relicked basses in the range. The Roadworn are all Mexican EDIT: The AV series are all finished in nitro though so buy one and use it for a few years and it'll be roadworn
Thanks Dirk, So are you saying all the roadworn basses are Mex and that they are finished in nitro? And what about the Mex 60's Jazz is that nitro or poly. Much appreciation Ian
18. Hi all, Im going nuts! Im interested in getting a Road Worn jazz bass in nitro but cant seem to figure how many different types their are. I can see the Mex 60's one is popular but is there a RW jazz in the American 62 Vintage series, which i would prefer i think. Gratious thanks Ian

20. Root, root and root,..if all else fails know where your root notes are at all times and make sure you know where the key changes are. Dont worry about making it sound clever just keep it simple and solid. Though any recognisable bass runs may need to be mastered from the get go....audiences are'nt that sophisticated but they will notice if something major is missing. Some nice stuff on the list. Impossible to go through them all but for eg if your trying to play Billie Jean like the record be sure to keep that repetative line even tempoed and precise, the band will love you for it. have fun.. 9
21. Sooo subtle....and right on musicality. Almost sounds like a P!!!!! Yowza! Now check this out. Early Stingray..fab playin http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZW5i1vbbKM...feature=related
22. James Jamerson..... Listen to any tune he ever played on and I think what you hear is every single note being played in the right place at the right time. I reckon that kinda verges on genius. In fact check out "Darling Dear", its real busy but every damn note is perfect......amazing.
