1. Violent Femmes - FULL ALBUM: http://youtu.be/QeJODSjIbT8 A very young Brian Ritchie on bass who arrived here with a fully formed musical identity from the outset. Respec'.
2. Absolutely love mine as I have endlessly stated in other threads The neck is fantastic. Never really been into red basses before but the CAR on mine is gorgeous.
3. Yes. I had great service from them recently. I bought a Kala tenor ukulele from them a couple of weeks ago (Omega had the lowest price online for the uke I was after) and I rang on a Saturday but unfortunately they were closed. I left a message regarding set up and first thing Monday morning I had a call back (which I missed) AND an email answering my queries. The answer was that yes, they do set up all ukes in their workshop before shipping for no extra cost (unlike many multi instrument box-shifters online). Bought it and it arrived the day after next in perfect condition, set up wonderfully and ready to go. Again, great service above and beyond AND the cheapest for what I wanted too!
4. Wateroftyne posted this vid to a similar query I had a while back. Sounds good to me! Spikedrivers - Young and Stupid (LIVE): http://youtu.be/BfjtK4Mnrg8 Cracking offer by Pete there BTW, sharing the BC good vibes. Good on you Sir!
5. Ditto all the above. I've pieced together my own wiring looms before and seriously, save yourself the hassle and give KiOgon a pm. All the top quality bits you would buy anyway, solderless pup/earth wire connectors and the price is right. Piece o cake.
6.
His early green bass probably still has the 1963 pickups, but I read (http://stranglers-ratter.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/basses-and-bad-backs.html) that Shuker used the green bass as a template for the JJ signature basses, and used overwound pickups to emulate the sound. I thought the bigger magnets and higher output windings would have the same effect. I've used them a lot, and like the bottom end grunt they give. Interesting that he went back to a Hiwatt 50 for some tracks on the album 'Written in Red', and he also used a Hiwatt 200 in the late 1970s. I used a Hiwatt 100 and 2 Hiwatt 4X10s stack (see my avatar) to get that Stranglers sound, and it worked a treat. His present tone using his signature Shuker bass and Ashdown amps and cabinets is very reminiscent of that classic early JJ sound - as can be heard on the Youtube video of 'Rattus at the Roundhouse' gig https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SItRVpLjAI0. Well worth watching!
I really like that you've gone to great lengths to recreate that bass and have put your own twist on it too with the pups. (I had quarterpounders in a previously anaemic jazz bass once - it used to make me laugh how good they were, gave that bass BALLS and great dynamics - good choice!) Bet it feels and sounds awesome \m/ +1 Regarding the Roundhouse gig footage by the way.
7. Nice job mate! LOVE those albums! Out of interest, why did you go for Quarter pounders? As they weren't around in the '70s. Wouldn't JJ's bass just have had the stock pickups fitted?
8. Had really drunk guy shouting for a song by The Doors all night. As it was a folky gig we just ignored him until he was making such a pain of himself we obliged, dedicating the next song to him. As we launched into Love Me Two Times, pissed bloke surprised us by launching into a frenzy of abuse, properly kicking off shouting Not The Doors, The Fa**ing DOORS!!! it was only when he got up really close shouting (spraying) at us through no teeth that we realised he meant The Corrs.
9.
I'd bet it wont, but I admire your sales technique
Funnily enough I have a job lot of non- flubby B strings in the boot of my car - they fell off the back of a DR lorry just yesterday. Half price for all BC'ers just meet me in the carpark before closing. (Ignore the "made in Taiwan" stamp on the packets - they are super special Namm prototypes, just put in there for freshness you see) That grand piano tone can be yours!! (Fire up the Reliant Rodders, and keep her running.... )
10. I really believe it to be a myth that cheap basses always have flubby B strings. If they do, it's down to some cheaper basses coming with cheaper flubby strings fitted imho. Put a .130 DR Lowrider on any bass and that B will gong like a grand piano and be useful all the way up the neck.
11. Great! I was gutted I missed the last one. Thanks for letting me know
12. Nice. A 4003 that won't slash your wrists with that horribly sharp binding. I like the dots better too.
13.
Indeed. I took my seven year old daughter to see a pub blues band last weekend. She really got what the music was about and felt a real kinship with the bald, overweight, dull musicians who were going through the motions and almost staying in time. The long noodling guitar solos in E really impressed her too. It's definitely the way forward.
What's wrong with being bald? Do tell.
14. O Brother, Where Art Thou? [FULL] (soundtrack): http://youtu.be/ZjzcGOSl2a0
15. Lalo Schifrin for me too, love this album in it's own right: Bullitt soundtrack: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLtJK_InIjqtQn6V3o-eYfd6VUl9fBLfKK
16.
Was a big Lizzy fan back in the day. Went to the 10th anniversary Vibe for Philo in Dublin (the Point i think?) with my mate who is still a huge Lizzy fan. We visited his grave, left the inevitable black rose (well as dark red as we could get!) & then went out to his old house where his mum now lives. My mate wanted to go & pay his respects but I didn't want to intrude, so I stayed in the car. Lynotts mum Philomena came out to the car (in the rain) to get me in for a cup of tea as she was pleased to see & chat to anybody who made the effort to come out there! She made us & a japanese couple who where there very welcome, gave us a tour of the tribute/shrine room dedicated to Phil. Saw his precision & ibanez at very close quarters & loads of memorabilia. Philomena gave us all a big hug farewell & we all had a few tears. A lovely person of great warmth & dignity on what must have been a difficult day. Then onto the gig in the evening after a good few porters to see Limehouse Lizzy, Eric Bell Band & a reformed version of Thin Lizzy with Gorham, Downey, Wharton, Mendoza & Sykes. A glass was raised this year whilst listening to my faves Johnny the fox & emerald! He was a big influence on me as a singing bass player. RIP Philo.
That's the best news I've heard all day, lovely story. Nice one!
17. I dunno, what genre's this? Massacre - Legs: http://youtu.be/ETxtSbfpjHE Bill Laswell getting a bit odd here. Which I really like because I don't think enough players truly embrace the great comedy value of the fretless. Enough weeping about for crying out loud. Treat it like a trombone I say.
18. Here's a link to it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00xln7l I'm going to be diving into ALL their albums now! Cracking songwriter was Mr. Lynott.
19. There's a good documentary about Thin Lizzy on BBC iplayer at the mo, parts of their Legends series. Really enjoyed it as I've not really delved into their work further than the usual excellent singles.. What a band!! ( and who said you need a low strap to rock! )
20. Nice job! Did you need to re-radius the fingerboard?
21. PS. PICS!!
22. How about getting a top quality passive wiring harness from our own KiOgan for a very reasonable amount and getting some good quality hum-cancelling pickups (Nordstrand/Aguilar etc. ) Thing to watch for though might be that the Affinity pups are the same size instead of the bridge one being slightly wider left to right as per Fender. If so, you'll have to buy two neck pickup singles. Maybe.
23. Maybe take a bit of time out to scrub up on some of those things that you didn't have time for when you were in an active rolling band. A bit of woodshedding is a great way to chill and take stock. Then when you inevitably join/start a new band you'll have a new and fresh angle to come from which will be a lot more fun. And on it goes..
24.
Missed an Out - Squier Affinity Precision PJ Also: Learned: that I'm never again going to play in anything loud enough to need drums. Still reeling from NYE gig, and I'm just fed up with so much volume. And with lousy drummers, come to that...In fact, while typing this, I've decided to scrap the idea of an extension cab for my combo. Too loud........
"It takes a great drummer to be better than no drummer at all" - Chet Baker
25. Maybe they had a bad stage mix and couldn't hear each other very well or something. Doesn't explain not tuning up properly though..
