1. or are you getting tones when not plucking... if so something is vibrating them close by piano strings all vibrate even if only one note is played...the output is low unless in the harmonic range
2. parcel2go has a limit of 500 i used interparcel to get the 750 i needed for a recent consignment
3. a P is a P and a J/J is a jazz the P/J for me doesnt work...i have one now...and use the P only...it came with the fashionable J but if i wanted a jazz sound i would have a J/J set up best compromise is a MM
4.
Very slightly damp cloth and some detergent if the finish is intact should get the grub off.
exactly..wood doesnt like being immersed in chemicals or water for too long but a perfunctory clean with a water based cleaner...wash up...and then a quick dry and then polish..no chemicals would be the best way... a small toothbrush used prior to this to ease any deposits at the fret base would be ok i then use a mean wipe of linseed oil...but thats on my rw necks
5. as mentioned...a good job will last the course you will have to just play it and see..
6. its to do with original manufacturing base and design i still think the bass is well made but may not now incorporate..'old' electronics i had a 1998...sr5...and it was ok for me
7.
It might be worth bering in mind than when Leo designed these things, It doubtful he was expecting them to survive for 20, 30+ years...
correct...they had to sell and clear the showroom...end of exercise
8. it shouldnt buzz anywhere or hit when you play your normal way also afterwards check the pup to string height i use 1/8" at fret 12 for action...and then fret there and see if there are any buzzes further towards the bridge..if so...raise slightly...its a question of playing....and where you play most on the fretboard i seldom go over fret 12 if ever i get up there its 3-9 for me
9.
I've been scratching my head for years over this. The standard Fender bridge is entirely up to the job. Basic, yes, just like the bloke who designed it. But, like all else he did in the early days, it was built to be easy to make, and therefore easy to service or repair. 100% on that score. Although I doubt anyone really knows why he changed from string-through-body, it was likely that he felt there was no advantage to it, and it simplified the body drillings. The BBOT is more complex than the old 2-saddle job, but only complex enough to get the job done. I've owned Precisions with Badass IIs on, and never noticed the slightest difference in any way (except for the extra 'bling' factor). But what really gets me about 'bent bit of tin' is that that is a grossly inaccurate description. That's a solid bit of steel by anyone's reckoning, and nothing so puny as a set of bass strings is ever gonna bend it. The current Fender Hi-Mass bridges are just marketing hype, IMHO. They're not hugely different from the BBOT. So, I say again: what's the problem?
you hit it...if you own a badass II then it gets called a bbot...for snob reasons.... the through body initially didnt need a massive bridge my guess is that when players got fed up of overly bent flats...they strung through the tail of the bridge then since everything still sounded ok...no changes were made it must be a fast bridge to produce in a bending machine and jig though
10. owowwo that socket set looks like it could do a thing or two meter the polepieces to earth one at a time any earthing there means the insulation on the windings have gone usually on the outside poles..especially on jazz with narrow bobbins thats my guess... the other is that the magnetism has degraded on the pole and isnt relaying the movement to the windings sufficiently can the pup be installed the other way round just to do an A/B on your nut theory cheers
11. i was sax and clarinet in a worship band changed bands..needed a bass so bass it is moved on many times since then but stuck with the bass
12.
Had an email from Monster Europe! Monster USA passed on my details to them. A chap got in touch with me to sort out postage and stuff. A soon as my lead gets to them they will send a new one out asap! Pretty darn good me thinks. I have to pay postage into Europe, they pay for it to get back. Costing me about 3 quid. I had my lead on sale. I paid 25 pounds for it. Think they are over 40 rrp. So still a few quid up.T
brill and fab
13. blues ueses a scale pattern which can be used in other genres...to effect for me blues is cool
14.
Thanks for that! In the end I found that one wire leading from the bridge pup was stuck in the channel leading to the electronics well. I think the bloke who had it before me must've done something weird with the whole bass (judging just by the exterior when I got my hands on it. Anyway, after much fiddling about, I got the wire out and soldered it to one of the pots and now everything works! And it sounds very nice indeed There is a slight amount of noise, and some crackling from the neck volume pot when the control is rotated. I guess I should put that down to it's age (and the manhandling it's been through)?
good vibes sherlock..you solved it!!
15.
I'm glad that Fender take a 'Heath Robinson' approach, that definitely bodes well with me. I can just picture Leo Fender in the 1950's, taking a step back from a problem in the workshop, scratching his head, and then reaching for a roll of gaffa tape.
well just look at that bridge.. any of the ideas will work...the object is to stop movement out of the neck and promote tuning
16. i watched it as well..scheff it is.. i think i saw a 51P and then the bog standard P later the sound to me was very plonky flat sounding...fantastic..
17.
I have a 1989/90 model and can't find any wiring diagrams for it. Diagrams for other versions don't explain it all as the MIJ version I have as a brass grounding strip going from the bridge pickup to the bridge. I haven't had the bass for all that long and it's not firing on all cylinders - it's lacking in volume, is noisy and gets noisier when I touch any metal parts. So I suspect something's up with the grounding. Any help much appreciated!
where there is no wire from a bridge to earth a copper earth strip to the bridge pup should suffice i did this on a jazz modified bass which had had EMG fitted previously so no bridge wire the ground from the bridge pup should be wired to this strip and then a new wire run to the pot/s..some tailoring in the tight space may be required basically all pups should work no matter where they were made or crafted as per normal electrical principles the slight variations you may see should fulfill these requirements in principle the hot leads from the pups go to their respective pots a wire then goes from pot to pot and then to the jack...this is the hot line..red all other earths are connected collectively to earth the pot bodies and bridge to the jack...this is the earth line..black if all is done correctly then other problems can be sorted personally i wire a jazz with a pan pot...its not ideal but only required one vol to adjust during playing
18. i got the same thing...too loud.. someone said if you cant hear yourself you are just right..pish!! i tried going through the pa and got muddied up with the synth... they took me off it...so i just continued via my combo... i do try to listen to the overall effect...but i think the problem converseley is that further away the bass becomes a sound and a vibration which is felt...sort of reinforced getting a sound check is worth it since as a hall fills up you think you disappear...but you dont.. if i am listening to a band... i go to the back and then tell the bass how they sound..whatever..and no patronising stuff
19. how to get to know a bc forumite sell him a bass ...send it by interparcel during the worst weather in years and spend days emailing/texting/mobiling back and forth on the merits of UPS, photography, food, and whether its a good day to tiperrary Ou7shined is a real patient man and full of heart... its been a pleasure getting to know him big +1

22.
Got a twin pickup passive bass, separate volume and tone pots for each pickup. Bridge tone pot works fine, neck tone pot does nothing. Is the problem more likely to be the pot itself, or the way it's wired to the pickup?
need to take a look at the wiring and as suggested the cap... meter the pot without any attachments across the tabs...middle one to each of the outers..then over the outers also make sure the pot has its earth firmly attached to the body of the pot.. etc its a matter of elimination
