1.
Here's my question. My band has a van, which is insulated (i.e. wood panels with some insulation behind them) and is kept in a shed. We gig a lot, and it's a huge amount of bother to unload the equipment when we get home (sometimes it could be 5am in the morning). Everyone is knackered, so we usually just leave everything securely locked away in the van. Sometimes the gear could stay in the van for up to a week, but usually it's only a night or two. I know that it's probably ok to leave the P.A. and even the amps in the van overnight when it's cold, but I feel like over a long period of time it might be bad for guitars. We keep them (obviously) in their cases. Sometimes when I bring them in from the van they are really cold... I've read that you should try to treat instruments as you would treat a person (temperature wise)... but I don't know if thats true or not. So far, I haven't noticed any bad effects, and my bass has not warped or anything wierd. It's a modern Fender Stu Hamm urge. I'm thinking about making a vintage P bass (valuable!) into my main gigging bass, so I'm a bit cautious about leaving it in the cold... Would a top of the line insulated flight case be any better than the normal fender case? Any ideas much appreciated. 3.
Hi all, Since acquiring a beautiful Lightwave Sabre VL 5 string I have decided to work at making a transition to 5 string, I have dabbled over the years with extended range basses, but have always gone back to what I know best. But it is interesting how many of you have made the jump and are devout 5 stringers! So, any advice on making the jump to 5, any tips or is it just the case of working in the extra string when it suits. Cheers Stuart
i did the jump to use fretted E and low D...so at every opportunity i used them somewhere in the song i found eventually they werent all that important and i could get the other notes higher up clearly on a 4 anyway my combo really wasnt up to low B etc and really was a party pooper where it should have made everything mega bass i did however buy my first musicman...the 5 of course...and although i went back to a 4 and not a musicman i can say the tone from them and the active 3 band really got more musicality out of the 4 string note applications i needed to try a 5 to really see whether one was what i needed....and i dont cheers geof
Good luck, let us know what eventuates...
not ordering strings just yet till santa calms down and things are back to normal managed to sort out what i think could have been the problem i normally set my bow to the E string...making it fairly low setting...the usual business card gap with fret 1 and 17 held down, or the fret 5 and 9..pluck fret 7 via an amp and listen for high pitched ring the G i discovered was a bit close and being whippy and was doing some funny wobbly vibrations and actually needed more bow... so i set that to my normal bow setting...the E and the rest are a bit larger but within reasonable amounts to suit my fretting pressure i also gave the G a bit more action height... it seems to have sorted it out... i think the string set is really kaput and outside its stable lifespan for my liking new slinkies for my birthday..early january thanks guys for the input...there is always something you never knew or at least thought you knew..

 6. its discouraging to say the least most dealing i have had here were spot on...paypal etc and no messing bad luck.. may i just add?.. merry christmas anyhow...cheers
Ok I see, although I'm not sure why lots of 3 inch wires each running from a pot chassis, tag or pickup are less inviting to interference than a single loop of wire. After all small radios use a single wire as an antenna.
multiple earths = possible hum... did you sent this in twice?
 8.
Sorry about the topic description...couldn't resist! So Hey... My new toy of Mesa goodness has got transformer to plug into the wall and then the power adapter for the pedal plugs into the transformer. Thing is, it's ridiculously buzzy after a while...not like deafening, but it's there...buuuuuzzzzzzzzing away in the back ground. How easy is it do convert something over to 240v? Or does anyone know of a decent, noiseless transformer solution? Thanks Jamie
check that the transformer is a regulated type...it should be on the label some data

After all small radios use a single wire as an antenna.
usually a 5 foot long dipole if its vhf..ideally..not really the same as both ends in some respects star or daisy works because it works no further technical knowledge or comparisons are necessary if you want to avoid any hum from multi earths do that way then you can concentrate on the real problems... normally a daisy set up for 2 vols and tone only has one wire to the jack from the bridge pup pot..no 2 the other pots are close enough to do a bus between them...i have used a piece of raw copper wire uninsulated across the 3 pots then a wire to the jack the earths from the pups and bridge all go to the no 2 pot mentioned i have also ran earths non daisy chained...without any problems...but now do it that way...just to be safe
 10.
This bass doesn't need a replacement bridge as several folks have said it's got the new bridge. Not that a P bass can't sound absolutely glorious with a bit of bent tin. Congratulations on an absolute bargain.
that is the acid test...do you want it to sound like the original and some of those were through body stringing the badass thing is good but not absolutely necessary unless you can really hear and improvement...you will hear a difference of that i am convinced...but tonally is it what you want
 11.
Power Stance? Ants in your pants? Head bangin' rants? Skankin' dance? Sissy prance? What's your weapon of choice when your on that stage slap, tap or pickin' away?! Do you run around the stage like a headless chicken or do you keep you head down and let your hands do the talking? I've seen 1000's of bassist and everyone seems to have they're own style but, saying that, there are deffinently some moves that you see over and over again. So, yeah... What's your style? 13.
Been using them for years. 1st class always. Next day, free of charge, without fail. Never thanked them though - perhaps I should have!
me too...its the postage thing i like...but i do comparisons with buster as well in stock means a lot when you are deciding and then plump for the very string you want i have always found their stock levels good...and the next day service spot on! good email replies as well if you need to query something...they got me a thomastik jazz round B straight off
 14. looks arent everything...to me this looks man in the street but if it plays well and the finish and neck joint is tight...good!! you can always tart it up...as for another scratchplate...why? i would think you may want to do the bridge first and leave it at that
 15.
Average spacing is 18mm. While we're on the subject, can anyone tell me the Fender Precision string spacing? I heard it was 19mm...
my yam is 19...and i bet most 4's are so we can put on substitute bridges without any problem and pups polepieces are in line with the strings my fender was 19
 16. been trying to get a courier quote for a £700 bass to aberdeen from manchester i tried parcel2go and they quote dhl as pretty favourable but say they only do up to £500 cover i am now having to consider interparcel and tnt fedex wont quote me unless i have an account...which i dont ups promises delivery within 5-7 days where do i go from here
 17.
I have a P-Bass with a DiMarzio Split-P pickup in it, wired straight down to the jack. When i've sheilded the cavity and the back of the plate will the jack fitting ground it? once the lead from the bridge is grounded too? Thanks!! p.s. is it just worth lashing the knobs back in even though they aren't used?
why the shielding...do make sure the bridge is earthed cleanly..the pots arent needed any more leave them wired up but not connected to the pup...no signal..no noise
 18. you can plug those ashtray holes with kitchen cabinet plugs..i did it on mine as the badass was too large to fit the ashtray back on i am not a keen P/J fan but for a P its delicious looking
 19. same as clarinet...his fingers need to reach the frets...of course he could learn with jumping around learn the fretboard first..names and positions...only up to the octave...12th fret then if he wants to read bass clef its a case of some easy tunes do they still do tune a day etc for electric bass...c paul herfurth or this
 20.
I've recently moved from using Overwater 34" nickel medium to light strings, which on the G is a change from 0.044 to 0.038 (as shown on the string packaging - the website says 0.045 and 0.040). The light G string is definitely a bit wingier than the medium and I have seriously considered reverting back this string to medium weight (as I have one to hand). The remaining 4 lower strings are fine and I prefer them to the previous set for ease of playing and pretty much identical sound quality. Practically though, the winginess is more in the acoustical sound of the struck string, the sound via the P/U's isn't hugely different. In the end, the heavier G might unbalance the playing feel so I haven't felt quite motivated enough to make the change to revert back to the 0.044 G. I think the message for you might be to see if you can try out a heavier G which is still compatible with the remaining strings. Good luck, let us know what eventuates...
this crossed my mind..thanks...i dont know the gauge and i usually use a 045...up to 105 etc...bog standard guy it could be that along with geoff's comments i shouldnt hesitate to change the lot...but havent settled on the string make that does slim windings at the tuners see this photo on this thread which no one has picked up yet string survey cheers
 21.
Nice colour! The height between the string & the P pup is, visually, a bit high-looking. Is the G response the same with the J pup & P pup solo'd? Do you have an old set that'll fit it? If so stick on the G & see if it's the same. G.
the new bridge saddles are right down...with the D and G fretted at fret 21...as in fender P neck dimentsions.. the gap to the P pup is under 1/8" and all outputs seem to be the same similarly the A/E on the other bit..1/8" gap... i dont really need the J much as i favour the P sound on this but have set that pup to under 1/8" ..just a smidgeon you are right about a string check though...i think i will actually go for a new set since i think this may have been popped a lot ..its a second hand bass never thought i would ever get a purple people eater bass.. thanks geoff
 22.
I've got copies of the official Fender spare parts list from the late 60s/early 70s in which our little black plastic friend is referred to as a finger rest. However I quite like the sound of tug bar.
fancy a pint
 23. hope its not too tight...as the Doc says...try to get something in there to slacken it off... i dont know if the rod will come out without taking the neck off...but i reckon thats the best way to handle the issue hexagonal gives 6 small increments for one full turn handy if you dont have a lot of space...similar to the hexagonal nut although square would not have the tendency to strip....you dont need a great amount of torque to tighten a truss rod... IF YOU SLACKEN OFF THE STRINGS
 24. i practice the usual scale mode and arpeggio...riffs and motifs but in a playing situation i dont really get a chance to air them...just some turnarounds and outros
