1.
Tell me more about the platinums. The website say they are available with round core. I am tempted.
well its a puzzlement..i can only find one supplier which comes up on google they havent got them in stock..and dont quote a price..except delivery of 1.95 i understand newtone is a luthier and they do loads of other instrument strings...yet i cant find any 'shop' for them the round core attracted my attention as well and the non squeaky characteristics for recording i wanted to compare ££ with TI rounds i will let you know if i find out any more... cheers
 2. havent tried these but have used elixirs which keep that played in sound right from around week 1 till they drop regarding squeak...if it seems worse its because the low fundamentals are dying and arent in quite so good balance that is when i know my strings are going goodbye...and then another good buy takes their place when strings are new the fundamentals are up there and talking out firmly...the squeaks are then in a lower order of sound my present strings are like that so i will be getting some new ones which??...here we go again...the merry go round of whats best or ££ value did you see my post on adagio strings...£7 a set on ebay plus a £1 postage
 3. the core...usually hexagonal..and the windings..do make a difference to the feel of the 'tension'...stiffer i think could be the word and less prone to be easily bent round cores with fine windings are easy to bend and 'feel' less tense
 4.
My TI Jazz A string broke whilst recording a track this weekend. I was gutted as, not only was it the middle of the track, but I din't have spare flats with me - I've simply never broken a flat other than by doing something bloody stupid with it (e.g., using a LB on a string through body bridge). I managed to get back to the part, albeit on the E string, before the end of the bar which, I think, was pretty good going, but of course had nowhere to go as the part moved up the scale, and we had to sack that take. Don't know if TI do individual strings but if not it's an expensive break indeed. The string looked pretty worn (it snapped at the saddle), making me realise that I spend a lot of time on the A string and should perhaps get around the neck a bit more! C
i had a little situation with my first set of jazz rounds...the windings were breaking on the fret faces i suggested material failure to the engineers...they have a quality control section at thomastik...in austria..and they sent a new set and thanked me for the chance to check out the metallurgy of the broken set rather than just a complaint just a thought pity about the break though and please please...use fretted A's in future
 5. quite cheap on ebay just now...are they good.. any users or comments please cheers
 6.
Perfect tone is out there somewhere, and its up to me and my P-bass to find it
and the rest of your sound chain if you can afford a £30,000 recording studio there is a carrot out there and its a long and expensive one
 7.
I use Jazz rounds. They are THE BOMB. For me. YMMV.
the absolute cream on the cats whiskers...if you can hack low but effective tension these are the most all round..pun not intended..string on the market... newtone platinum are similar
 8.
Hi. Is the bass sold
not yet...a buyer is awaiting sale of his gear to fund the purchase... others may be interested but unfortunately i have given my word to wait...with limits of course
 9.
Here is my problem. I have a Tech soundsystems TVM head. It's a solid state head with passive EQ. I like to drive the gain stage quite hard because that's the sound I like (usually set to around 3 o'clock). I also boost both treble and bass EQ on the bass. It's a bit of a thuggish approach, but I like the sound and it certainly cuts. The issue is that the DI output is really high and frequently causes problems for soundmen. I can get it back down to an acceptable level by dropping the input gain and switching to active input, but that fundamentally alters the sound of the amp and I have to push the master volume. Would a line out to an external DI with level control solve my problem?
do you have an effects send socket...this will send a light signal to the desk but is usually a 1/4 unbalanced jack iirc di out is before the preamp and gain?? would need to check this on my combo but the effects send and return is defo before the preamp...but is 1/4"
 10.
G & D pups swapped over, problem has moved to D string,so it is the pup,but they are still all reading the same output.Plan B,new pickup.
missed this post...scrolled down too far what output are you measuring...collective or singular i do think the pup is not behaving well but if it reads a 6-8K..guessing a bit here..coil resistance it must be registering some string movement good luck with it...as you say...if in doubt ...chuck it out
 11.
If you're taking it apart anyway, swap the positions of the 'G' pickup and the 'A' and see if the problem migrates with the pickup then you can be sure it isn't a string problem. G.
check this is the way to go... You've got to accentuate the positive Eliminate the negative Latch on to the affirmative Don't mess with Mister In-Between getting a replacement pup...is this going to be easy
 12.
Have to disagree with regards to using harmonics to set intonation I'm afraid. The note at the 12th fret needs to be in tune. Sound the open string, make sure that's in tune and then check the note at the 12th fret. If it's different then move the saddle as others have described. The reason for this is that the 12th fret is not exactly half way between the nut and the saddle as you have to account for string compensation. If you get the note at the 12th fret perfectly in tune, you'll find the harmonic is flat. It's a small difference, but it's there.
the harmonic is the octave of the open string...and wont be flat unless your open string is flat having got the string in tune...with a tuner...sounding the harmonic is subjective...its not the way you play the octave but gives the pitch one is striving to adjust to...fretted the way you play is with the string fretted....this is the part you are adjusting...not harmonics etc so the saddle is moved...due to dead spots just forward of the saddle bend...which are dependent on string guages if you are happy with your method fine!! the objective is to have clean and well tempered upper notes reference to lower notes...mainly all fretted the layouts of frets is another subject which i dont really understand...
 13. sorry guys..i dont meant to upset anyones way of setting intonation i ring the harmonic...2nd...since its exactly the octave of the open string tuning..then the fretted the idea is to get the fretted note to sound the same as the harmonic...the octave of the open string not using the harmonic should result in the same thing remember the haromonic is the bench mark....and not the way the octave is played i dont see any argument here at all
 14. i dont know this bass but signals from pups go to a pot...so i guess your 4 pups join somewhere...could be the place to look low signal may mean either lack of output or lack of proper transfer to the next stage...the vol pot ie poor connection...if it happens just like that its a puzzlement... i think you will need to strip it out and check it with a meter hot to earth should give the same reading as the others...they have to be disconnected and casing to hot...for earth leakage...the casing is metal...lipstick style i take it hope you do get it sorted and this helps you on your way cheers
 15.
That's really very nice. The nut's a bit ... erm ... quirky.
adjust a nut on warwicks?? similar i think a nut should also be a zero fret...
 16.
Hey peeps i am looking for a set of strings that give that really slack feel. I have been testing a few new Basses recentley & noticed that some of the set ups i've really enjoyed the feel of have strings on that feel really soft & slack. Sorry to ask such a silly question but i just honestly dont know this, am am looking to replace my strings sometime during the week & would like some recommendations please. Cheers
round cores fine wound outers small gauge thomastik jazz rounds
 17.
Good luck to a great seller
thanks from a great bass collector...cheers awaiting developments
 18. hi you will need room for all the gubbins and a battery chamber..then a switching jack also i would think some idea of what connections the pickup wires go to iirc someone had an olp pup which had less wires than a musicman..sort of...your pup should have at least 2 hots and an earth...i suspect 2 hots and 2 earths...and maybe a screen around them could mean some routing etc
 19.
They're still on the Thomastik site... at least for me: http://www.thomastik-infeld.com/johcgi/tho...bSubStaerke=156
thanks.... i didnt see the flat wound icon...i clicked it and it took some time to load silly me
 20.
True, although that would depend on the finish. It's it's poly then no problem, but adhesive spray might just eat right through nitro.
tell me about it....i got bostik cement on my rickenbacker fitting a little masking plate around the badass conversion...the glue melted the paint
 21. once you get your shape you may want to consider non ply scratchplates then you wont have the work of doing the edge bevel neatly so that all the plys are equal solid white is one i made
 22. barts are good...does your bass not have some eq on board
 23.
Righht thought i'd swap out the pups on my CV jazz and put in the vintage style EMG;s ive got lying about! Also, Ive got a EMG balance pot lyin around too so thought i'd use it instead of two volumes! The controls i have are a pre wired vol and tone pot from a PBass EMG setup, but can anyone help withhow i wire the balance pot up to it and also the output jack? cheers
this should show you the way you will need to disconnect the P from its vol and connect it to the pan pot..likewise the jazz pup keep the tone and jack wired together and all you need do is connect from the pan pot outlet to the tone pot in effect you are interposing the pan in the present P wiring and then connecting the jazz to the pan pot you dont need any more gear..maybe a bit of wire as you have 2 pups pan pot vol pot tone pot jack

 25.
thanks alot for your wise words guys. Tomorrow morning i'll have access to a multi meter and a technician so hopefully i'll be able to get closer to an answer then. I may as well take this opportunity to learn more about instrument maintenance and i think i will have a go at some soldering. Oh and what readings should i be looking out for? Thanks again guys update to follow! Tom
i wasnt sure which pups you had but a P standard is around 13k and a jazz 6-8k hot ones of course are higher.. those are the readings over the coils as played...if you have exposed poles check them to earth..you shouldnt get a reading...or rather a big one.. to finish off check the installed wiring for all the earths to the jack ground pin...you should get 0 ..that is dead earth..dont forget the bridge...i check the strings to earth...they have to be earthed as well over the saddles do your pup checks with the pots disconnected or at full vol and no tone you can get misleading readings with pots connected and i do the pup checks out of the bass and then the earth checks when wired up hope you get sorted ok.. next master class for you and your assistant will be setting up the neck, action, pup heights and intonation its good to really be a part of the instrument and know its every part has been checked out.. cheers
