1. i clean mine regularly body and neck with a cloth when i do a string change i give the frets and board a clean and use some linseed oil ..rosewood clean up the area around the pups polish the body/headstock but not the neck i use a little paintbrush to take out the dust around the pups it doesnt get all that dirty though..after a playing session i wipe down the strings and neck
 2. sorry guys for the negative opinions on thumb or finger rests i play finger style and move around to create differing tones...wouldnt be any good to me i dont think
 3.
Does it sound like that acoustically? Are they choking on upper frets? Have you tried (1) releasing the truss rod just a little & (2) trying changing the heights of the pickups on that side? I recently got an OLP with a pretty poor B string. A decent setup & new strings plus lifting the pickup on the bass end has made it into a real monster with an incredibly strong & clear B. So much so that my guitarist mate who plays bass in another band has grabbed it off me! G.
i think it must have been something along those lines...i took all the strings off and reset their alignment...i have just changed bridge and may have twisted the G since the holes in the bridge were a bit tight...drilled them out did reset the pups as well...didnt really know what the settings are for covered polepieces but set them at the fender guidelines..more air now seems a bit more fuller now.. new strings on the menu now soon...its a second hand bass and i dont know the string make and age...the E/A/D are fine thanks all
 4.
That's 'whinging' or 'whining' - mine do that all the time!!! G.
guess i am stuck with it.. i will try a new set and different gauges...or just play the notes on the D string...only up to D'
 5. same as ashtrays...clutter
 6. yamaha 270J i have set up my bass just as i would advise anyone all the string outputs are equal the tone is as i like it setting everything flat on the amp and bddi and no tone cut on the bass the G string is very wingey up to the 9th fret the strings arent new but seem to hold sustain ok any advice appreciated cheers geof
 7.
Another related question - My basses are set up for low action without fret buzz, but above the 12th fret, the sound is choked, especially on the B and E strings. Should I be moving towards a straighter neck and higher action, or a more banana shaped neck, and higher action, or a more banana shaped neck, and a shim, or something else? David
i would start with standard bow...then select your action height then set the pup heights its basic and can give you a datum to work to
 8. check string to pole piece distance ..ie pup heights just a guess you can swap the sides of the P over and see if it occurs on the E/A good luck
 9.
I've read a lot and appreciated the logic relating to the importance of neck relief, but then I've owned basses by Modulus and Sadowsky that seemed to play perfectly with none, or at least, very little. I generally prefer a higher action, so what's the best bet, should I keep the neck straight(ish) and raise the saddles or vice-versa? Chris
action is saddles...relief is just to get rid of buzz...straight necks with high action would seem ok to me but since i like low action i set the relief...bow..to my personal settings..not quite straight but just clear with frets 5 and 9 fretted and 7 just making a noise when plucked..need to be on the amp for this...its hard to do but gives the most practical setting for bow
 10. i have been using an EB cheapy strap for 15 years on loads of basses recently it got away from me on a sale but has returned thanks to bill... i have also got a planetwaves type slim strap similar to the EB but it goes over the normal strap buttons with those clasp ends they do..just as cool as straplocks
 11.
Why on Earth don't Schaller supply the perishing things with fatter screws? I just drilled out the Schaller buttons a bit and used the original screws on my Mex-hasn't come undone yet!
chacun a son gout...methinks i used a bit off a rawlplug...on the ric and similarly on others always keep a clear eye open for the day you may have to take them off and replace with the original strap buttons
 12. i prefer a string to have a slimmed down end at the tuner i cant remember all the makes that do this but if i recall thomastik do and perhaps some of the rotos any information appreciated as i only want to use this type in future...see my tuners in photo thanks in advance
 13.
I enjoy fingering and slapping most people i know enjoy this the most :brow:
being a bore..i only am interested in fingerstyle i watched a bassist last night...urb...using bow etc and finger i was more interested in the string hand..cant say fretting..what is the correct expression lots of real big stretches going on it was a 16 year old girl
 14. definately try another string this sounds like my strings when they are old and i take them off to do a little job on the bass when they go on they sound bright again and then die almost within minutes the badass really should do the opposite to what you experience twisting a string when refitting can alter its performance...thats why new is always the criteria for assessment you are then fitting a string with no previous witness points or twisting it to get the string at the tuner end to line up
 15.
See Clarkys earlier comment...the pups are not standard Jazz pups, they're stacked.
that was stupid to miss that..bit of knee jerk and lack of attention, sorry can the interference be getting i via other components..i would still vote for a check using the bass on other electrical outlets without any lighting being on... might need a torch doing a short over the jack would perhaps eliminate any thoughts about that.. i cant comment on copper tape shielding...i have never used it
 16. the old favourite..check the bridge earth...i put on a black bridge and had to scrape of some black to get the wire underneath to give an earth reading when fitted also jazz pups only buck hum when both are on full volume.... of course all the earlier comments apply...and check it out on different places...my home sockets induce hum when the boiler pump is running best of luck
 17.
Lucky you! I've found a small 8mm socket that should fit but I will have to saw some length off the matching Allen key to get it in. Thanks for the advice, Geof - I think this will eventually work. No response from Allparts to my email and they seem to be the only supplier.
allen keys are made in tool steel so get a really sharp blade...hope it all works ok i have made loads of one off tools to fix the car
 18.
Just had a look at the tuner you used. Am I right in saying that it doesn't actually give you a display of the note in cents? Just tells you which note you're closest to and then some LED segments to tell you how sharp or flat you are to that note, but no actual scale? In which case you have no idea what each segment actually represents and whether the scale is linear or logarithmic. Therefore unless you could actually hear that the notes in question were out, I'd say it's a lot of fuss over nothing.
listen to the playing and accept unless you can virtually see the frets are out of line...its ok tuners are for tuning up
 19.
OK - I'll check through my sockets, give it a go and report back.
just had a look at the 270J....fortunately its an allen key job if you get a socket to fit...any bit of bent metal will do the turning...after slackening off the strings usually a truss rod turns quite easily a round bar hammered to the appropriate square...then bent would do the 'key' to turn the socket cheers geof
 20.
On the bottom string (E), the open and 12th fret were in good agreement, but the 1st and 2nd frets were sharp
thats the F and F# does your tuner actually measure these notes
 21.
I'm doing my best, but it ain't easy. Yamaha replied and seem to think it's 8mm, although they no longer carry them themselves. I went on the Allparts site to order one and .............. out of stock. Is there an alternative UK supplier?
back to the cheapie idea...a socket and an allen key force the allen key into the square of the socket driven end i have a yamaha 270J...i havent set the neck yet but i will check tonight.. i am at work...and see if i can adjust it easily...i might have the same problem..the adjustment is at the body end ps...how about a survey of the music shops if possible to get a loan of one.. its a bugger just for a simple adjusting tool to have to search the world
 22.
Unfortunately, a normal box spanner or socket won't fit. The problem is getting the socket to the nut, which is recessed inside the neck. You need a very short box spanner affair with a handle attached at right angles. There are pictures of some here: http://www.allparts.uk.com/online-shop/all..._1_137_138.html If I knew what size would fit, I'd order one, but I'm getting conflicting information on the size needed and can't get in there with anything else except the specialist tool. I'm going to email Allparts now to ask them.
my rickenbacker came with a spanner like that and it broke at the handle to box joint.. i dont doubt you will get one...i just thought us musicians can get to thinking it has to be the one and only for the make good luck stevie geof
 23.
No i think you misunderstand the whole point is i want to listen to my amp through headphones but it doesnt have a head phone socket.
impossible...all you hear is little pops via headphones...do you want to hear the amps real tone
 24.
Hi Can anyone help me out, i have a Iceni Zoot S4 Pro that i am looking to sell to raise funds towards a Warwick Corvette $$, i am struggling to set a realistic asking price as these are hand made guitars and have no comparable models as a guide unlike say !!! Stingrays, Jazz's etc. More about the Bass, it has an 18 volt active Circuit with Bartolini Pickups........a seriously powerful Bass
contact mike walsh at iceni...i am sure there are comparable models to help set a price think what the bass is up against as a competitor...and see what price they might be...
 25.
Thanks for all the help guys. As suspected... It was the strings! I put some regular slinkys on and all is fine. Cheers!
big vote for EB..
