4.
There is if you spell it "Chriffmas" , as if you had a speech impediment...
...bit too close to Cliffmas!
5. Our singer just points out that there's no f in Christmas songs... Sometimes even twice!

7. I've got a spare ticket for tomorrow night at Koko in Camden. Doors 7pm. Wilko Johnson with Norman Watt-Roy and Dylan Howe. Supported by the 45s.
8. Not tried the Tascam but I've been using a Zoom H2 for a couple of years with excellent results. Providing the three-way gain switch is set correctly (or it'll sound like it was recorded in a crisp packet!) with both pairs of mics selected, we just stick it in a mic stand in the middle of the room - easy. Although you can trim and edit on the device I find it easier and quicker to edit on the computer before sending on to other band members. It's been superseded now so you should be able to pick one up second hand cheaply. There are other threads on here that deal with similar devices too.
9. ...another Troublemaker here and loved Booker T since I was a teenager. It doesn't get much better than the two together.
10. He's got a solo album out:
11.
... i believe there is a place somewhere out by the tonbridge road?? - a maidstonite will be along soon to confirm
Not a Maidstonite but its ESE Music.
12. Great thread idea, shame its not used more! Can't Sleep in Silence - nicklathambass As a non-professional musician and only occasional listener to instrumental music (Meters, Booker T and some classical world type stuff my main exceptions) I don't feel best placed to judge Nick's five tracks here. However, in the spirit of the thread, here goes... Overall, without knowing the back story, I'd say impressive as there's little to knock. It comes across as very well played, nicely arranged and well recorded (when listened back through a laptop). There is a good mix of light and shade, the tracks express emotion and I'm sure that a lot of people will find them ticking a lot if not all of their boxes. There are two aspects that don't work for me but to be fair, these comments are my general views on this type of music rather than Nick's tunes in particular: Firstly, in the absence of vocals, the playing is quite busy at times which is fine for the odd song, break or fill but over does it for me (particularly here on Bounce). Secondly, The bass tone is high in the mix and while I'm often heard saying that 'you can't have too much bass', I mean it in a warmer, supportive way, holding a track together, cutting through when required but sharing a track's focus. These tracks feel like backing tracks to the bassline which, for me, detracts from the music and makes it more technical exercise. Different strokes for different folks... I know these two points are highly subjective as I can happily listen to the likes of John Entwistle whereas no matter how good, impressive and expressive I know Jaco was, in the context of a band does little for me emotively. This technicality is demonstrated for me in Closure which I thought was played on an acoustic classical guitar to start with but as the track developed I became more certain its played on bass. Clever, but if it sounds like a guitar, I'd prefer to hear a guitar. The previous paragraph goes some way to explain my opening point but these tracks demonstrate far more than technical competence. The highlight track for me is Hammerhead and opening to The Overlap. I found all tracks very listenable and at no point did I feel like skipping to the next track. I'd say add some vocals and these and I would have a very different opinion - but I guess that's the point. One that unfortunately I don't get... ____ Your turn... The Instamatics first album Something just clicked. Flashback to a five-bulb pop of new wave creations and soul-styled dirty leaps. Flashforward to silver-tinged whiskers and a lick of the old-fashioned pause button. Pressed under the modern weight of valve-spaced greats since 68, The Instamatics are here to take a picture. Peel back for taste. Open up for sound. And enjoy. Twelve tracks - any comments will be greatly appreciated Pull... Fire...!
13. 'Bigest' indeed. Can't be standard tuning as it's missing a G...
14. Zoom H2 user here. Used it to record band rehearsals and songwriting sessions for about 18 months with great results. The only minor issues have nothing to do with the sound but it does feel lightweight (its a lot lighter than it looks), the screen is small and the gain switch is similar to the on/off switch which isn't great in dim lighting conditions - I accidentally set it to high once which resulted in the recording sounded like it'd been recorded in a crisp packet! Keep the gain set to low, stick it in the middle of the room with both pairs of mics on and it records a fairly loud five piece band really well with a good stereo image and with clear definition of the various instruments and vocals. I really haven't explored its full potential and I don't have any comparative experience of similar products but I'd recommend the H2.
15. I've been hoping to attend as I thoroughly enjoyed last years but haven't been able to shake off other commitments. Should any of the workshops get videod and posted on YouTube, please post links in this thread! Have a great day.
16. As with any categorisation, its never simply black and white Some original bands write songs that you think are covers... Many covers bands play the odd original or do covers in an original way... Sometimes the only original thing about a band is their name or image or how they describe themselves regardless of what they play... Some would argue that it doesn't matter if a band are comfortable with whether they are seen a covers or an originals band as long as they're doing something that attracts an audience... Some bands never play to an audience... Some bands play rubbish covers originally, some bands are rubbish until they do a cover... etc etc - plenty of contradictions and shades of grey. and to complicate things further, many covers and originals bands aren't bands at all - they're solo guitarists or vocalists with a few backing musicians!
17. Just bought an Ibanez CF7 Chorus + Flanger pedal from Cliff. Top man and pleasure to deal with, thanks a lot!
18. I've got an H2 and it has a three position - low, mid, high - gain selector. I just stick it in a mic stand (mic barrel adapter included) in the centre of the room with both pairs of mics on and we generally get excellent quality recordings from our rehearsals.
19.
Isn't it just great playing live alongside good people. There's nothing quite like it. Enjoy every minute.
^The meaning of life! Congrats and enjoy
20.
My Zoom is only used for its tuning capabilities now
Same here. Occasionally play with creating new patches (octaver-based) or on the rare occasion I use an effect live its usually the factory preset B5 for a bit of funky squelch or A2 for something a bit harsher (not saying either of them are brilliant patches but good enough for my (very) occasional needs). Use it more when noodling around on a guitar tbh.
21.
P with flats for Motown and 'Ray for everything else. (Have used the Stingray for Motown perfectly well too!).
Couldn't agree more. Normally only gig the Stingray and use the P for recording when more of a Motown sound is desired. The others are fun to have, cured some gas at the time but definitely not essential.
22. Nice one! A mate of mine makes cigar box guitars - usually three-stringers or one-string diddlebows - and I made one recently which got me thinking about a bass version... one day...!
