1. I'll be sorry to see the ipod go though I expect there are so many spare parts kicking around they will be around a long time after they are officially discontinued. Never really been interested in smartphones and the storage seems quite limited. I can go on holiday and have over 100Gb's of music on my ipod to choose from with space to spare to have the occasional movie or two to watch on the ipod classic's screen (great for long plane journeys). No guessing if there's going to be wifi or streaming facilities where you are going, it's all there already at your fingertips. I went through a few cheapo non-ipod mp3 players which all died in a couple of years but I've had great service from my ipods which have all been second hand buys from ebay at sensible prices. The battery on my tiny 1GB 'clip on postage stamp' is only lasting about 3-4hrs now but I've worked it to death over the last 6 years so i don't think it'll owe me much when it gets retired. The battery on the 16oGB classic gets stick if I'm watching movie on it but i take a plug-in recharger on holiday so I've never been stuck yet.
2. No definite deal done on this yet so a quick nudge bumpy type thing.
3. I've never used the 'get artwork' function, I just get jpg's or whatever from the web, never even think about it and it takes seconds and then I have a permanent copy of the artwork within the album folder on my external hard drive. Very occasionally the ipod will 'forget'the artwork is attached and needs to be re-synched via itunes and this is really easy when you have a jpg file instantly accessible to link from again. I try to get some sort of artwork for everything I have on itunes (and I'm up to over 600GB's worth these days) but there will always be a few that fall through the net. Just nice to have the album cover come up on screen on my ipod while I'm listening to it, it also can help when quickly browsing through a playlist. Often the artwork jumps out at me to remind me of an album before the actual title does. I don't routinely look at album artwork in my itunes browser though,it's there for me to keep stuff in order so I have columns for artist, album, song title, year, duration, disk number, genre as priorities.
4.
Policy should be based upon legal requirements. Formal guidelines can be found here http://www.hse.gov.uk/electricity/faq-portable-appliance-testing.htm and here http://www.hse.gov.uk/event-safety/electrical-safety.htm
From HSE site: The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require that any electrical equipment that has the potential to cause injury is maintained in a safe condition. However, the Regulations do not specify what needs to be done, by whom or how frequently (ie they don't make inspection or testing of electrical appliances a legal requirement, nor do they make it a legal requirement to undertake this annually).
5. I got one of these from another BC member about a year ago as I was about to join a band where a passive P sound would fit most of the set list. They are indeed an excellent bass and it is currently my main gigging instrument. Hope you find a buyer.
6.
The point of PAT testing is wooly at best, and at worst it's a money-printing machine.
I agree
7. So anyone can just make up their own policy as regards testing and in the event of an incident it is then up to the courts to decide if the policy that someone has invented was proper for the work they were carryng out? I thought there would be more formal guidelines than this.
8.
Me too
IIRC there was also some all-girl (Australian?) band as openers too. They seemed to get a bit miffed when they weren't being showered with adoration by all and sundry. Considering I'd seen plenty of pub bands making a better fist of it I was tending to side with the rest of the audience.
9. So you PAT test something once and then assume it will remain in that condition forever? At work we have a system where testing is done annually on most items except computer related which are only done every 2 years. I assumed that was some sort of legal requirement but maybe not then.
10. So on the safety side alone, rather than contractual obligation, how many here PAT test every electrical item in their house very interval that HSE rules require?
11. I saw them when the real James Brown was their support act
12. Just buy the blank stickers...
13. That serial number is just 2 along from one that Gary Tibbs played in Roxy Music. I think the 'JG' prefix dates back to when Jon Gustafson was working with Wal in developing the pro series basses. There's a photo of a scruffy bit of paper detailing where some of the serial numbers went to, some famous names in there... 14. Not really seen much of Mr Mars before - is he a James Brown tribute act?
15. What's provided in the kitchen? If I can make it I'd be happy to bring some cheap coffee/tea/milk/biscuits then folks can go in and make a brew as they like, might need to bring their own mug though?
16. One bass at the moment. I used to turn up with a spare but it rapidly became evident I was neverr going to be given enough stage room to actually have a spare accessible if anything went wrong so it's just a P at present. Nothing much to go wrong on a passive P anyway, I carry a spare set of strings but that's it.
17. Our regular drummer had to take a visit to the hospital so couldn't make the gig last night. Unfortunately his most likely dep was working in Cardiff until evening and got to the venue at 9:30 which is our usual show start time. We'd set up everything else so got his gear unloaded from his car asap and he got it set up sharpish. Quick soundcheck and we were on at 10pm, short break in middle then 2nsd set until about 12:15. I was due to attend a house party on way home, got there at 1am and was back home by 03:30, pretty relaxed evening all things considered...
18. This is a US built Precision Deluxe. I think the serial dates it to 2003. These are active with an 18V 2 battery output. There are controls for master vol, blend between the P type and (double) jazz type pickups, bass/treble/boost as a stacked pot and a separate mid-range boost as well. The tonal possibilities are subsequently pretty wide within the Fender spectrum. The condition is very good, I've had it cleaned and last year spent a significant amount of money having it given a good going over by a local guitar tech and this included some mild levelling of frets. It played well before but now it's a brilliant player, probably the best neck on the 3 Fenders I have. I was originally looking for a US precision in butterscotch blonde to match my jazz bass. There were few around so in the end I bought this via eBay about 2 years ago. However I subsequently found a passive P bass and it seems a bit unnecessary having a P, jazz and a bass with a combination of both. Not desperate to sell but it is getting relatively little use (think I'm more of a passive bass guy) and deserves to be out there gigging more. Hence I'm looking for a sale only NO TRADES and I will not be reducing the price. It either goes for the listed price or I keep it. I will include the hard case that came with it (due to the slightly different body shape the normal moulded cases for a P bass don't really fit) which is a bit rough in places but perfectly serviceable and still has some of the original tags that came with the bass). I don't have details of weight or neck profile, can only say hat the neck doesn't feel as wide as my 2001 P bass and it is not as heavy as either the P bass or the 2003 jazz I have. I would prefer to hand over in person as a cash deal and would be prepared to meet up to a reasonable distance from Nottingham for normal travel costs. If I end up having to courier it somewhere then I will have to cost that up and include it as an added extra on the price. 19. Are they decent or utter gash then?
20. If he's a harmonica player he'll probably be confused half the time which key you need to play it in anyway as he'll have a different key harp in his hand. Unless it's something a bit off the wall then it's surprising (or maybe not) how much blues you can busk along with. I wouldn't be particularly comfortable in that situation though and happy to admit it.
21. Seen one or two bands in sports halls and they always seemed out of place and the sound was sh*te at both. Only played one, or at least it was a big hall in the general design of a sports hall. Works thing, daytime and low key. We played it small and kept down one end with the sound low so drew the crowd down to a gathering an ddidn't affect other things going on elsewhere in the room (charity stalls etc) so not a normal gig at all. The main thing i recall about the sound was that I was trying out my wireless system and had to ditch it as my combo was picking up the University's in-house radio station
22. Yes bootlegging's been going on for years, at their height Zeppelin were probably the most bootlegged band in christendome and Peter Grant was trying to milk everything he could from joe public on behalf of the band. But they were selling albums by the truckload so a few bootlegs here or there weren't going to be much of a concern. I think this type of action just further demonstrates where the shift in priority of 'product' by the artists has taken place. They have pretty much no control over free distribution of their studio recorded material however much anti-pirating legislation tries to stop it. I recall not that long ago Prince himself just 'gave away' a brand new studio album with a Sunday newspaper. So the shift is to try to control as much as possible what goes on at the live shows as this is now the main product, not what's been recorded in the studio. Live gigs is the steady income stream for a lot of artists now. It's understandable that he wants more control over what comes about during that performance. As someone else mentioned if it gets too out of hand people will get to see a full show on youtube (though the recording quality might be dubious) enough to decide they might not bother actually going after all. You would assume Prince is currently still big enough to sell out arenas irrespective but it won't last forever.
23. Moondance. Ask Bilbo for pointers in advance though.
24. I don't change settings on my amp much during the course of a gig either but if I need access to it I'd much rather the controls be at a sensible height than having to take my bass off and kneel on the floor to make any slight adjustments. I use a combo so its not an option for me but if I was using a separate power amp it would almost certainly be in a rack on top of the cabs rather than on the floor.
25. Decent numbers out last night at Plainsman in Mapperly, more than I'd expect for this time in January when budgets start getting a bit tight. Got a bit hairy in second set when the fine line between 'band space' and 'punter space' was getting a bit too blurred for comfort at times but we got through it relatively unscathed. Tried a new song I was unsure would work for our set, I wasn't wrong. Can't see it lasting too many more gigs but that's the luxury of doing covers, there's a whole slew of stuff out there to draw on instead.
