1. I've recently joined a covers band via JMB. At 52 I reckon I'm at least 20 years older than any of the other members. Fortunately there was no age range stipulation in the original ad (although a bit of Googling revealed that when they advertised for a guitarist 18 months ago they specified age 20 - 35) and the subject of age didn't come up at the audition. They must realise that I'm a bit older than they are, but I don't think they suspect that I'm old enough to be their dad!
2. I've used my CM-2 in a loop with an LS-2 and it sounds fine.
3.
At which point does it become reformed? There's quite a few who have had significant lineup changes
I took it to mean a band that formerly announces that it's splitting up, members go their separate ways, then gets back together a few years down the line. Maybe for sound artistic reasons, maybe because of the dawning realisation that the endowment isn't going to cover the mortgage
4. Wire have released some great albums in their reformed incarnations following their initial dissolution after their classic late 70s trio - Pink Flag, Chairs Missing and 154.
5. I think I'll pass, but it's certainly eye-catching. https://reverb.com/item/1736487-1968-marlin-idol-pb-26-bass-sunburst-very-rare-crazy-design
6.
"Rip It Up" by Orange Juice references "Boredom" by The Buzzcocks not only in the lyric but also in the the guitar part that follows.
And "I Can't Help Myself" off the Rip It Up album references the Motown song of the same name: "Just like the Four Tops/I can't help myself".
7. I've never bothered doing one of these NBD threads before, but you don't see that many Carvins around and the seller's pics do show off its good looks rather well. I've been looking out for an unlined fretless fiver for about a year and was hoping that a secondhand Ibanez SRF705 might come up for sale here or elsewhere, but no luck. There have been a few other candidates that have aroused my interest, but I haven't pulled the trigger until now. I saw this on eBay and from there found the seller's own site where it was advertised £50 cheaper than the BIN. He's based a few miles along the coast from me, so yesterday afternoon I hopped on a train and went along 'just to have a look and check out the string spacing'. Needless to say I walked away with it. As others have noted, the one thing you can say about Carvins is the build quality is very good. This has an asymmetric neck (NT) which is a joy to play, very nice ebony fingerboard, it's light and, thanks to that long upper horn, balances beautifully. The roundwounds it came with are nothing to write home about, but I'll be putting a set of nickel Elixirs on tomorrow and getting a chance to hear it sing properly. 8.
What if there are multiple authors of a song and some want it to be used and others don't?
Exactly the situation John Densmore, Ray Manzarek and Robbie Krieger found themselves in. Densmore vetoed a $15m deal for Cadillac to use "Break On Through (To The Other Side)" in an ad. The other two took him to court. Some lawyers got very rich.
9. Thanks for that Blue. I was aware of her through the Miles Davis connection, but I'd never heard any of her music. Fantastic! I'm currently downloading the Nasty Gal album.
10. John Cale at the Roundhouse (in that London) on Wednesday. Met him through work years ago, but I've never seen him play live.
11.
I'm using EBS PCF-10 cables and they're the business.
I use these as well. They allowed me to squeeze two more pedals onto my board!
12. Just noticed a very nice looking TRB4 ii (MIJ) in the new London Road Cash Converters in Brighton (opposite Boots). Priced at £299 which seems very reasonable. I was on my way to work so didn't get a chance to play it, but I went in to have a closer look and it seems to be in good nick. Please can some other Brighton-based BCer grab this before I succumb to temptation? I really can't justify buying another 4 string fretted bass, but if I have to walk past this every day...
13. Swapped these for the Elixirs on my P/J last night. Feel really good under the fingers - more compliant than the Elixirs, but still very responsive. Makes it easier to play fast with good articulation. Initial impression soundwise is that they have a punchy low mid presence and attractive sounding highs - not at all harsh or brittle. It will be interesting to see how they change with playing, but so far I'm very impressed.
14.
Personally, I'd go for a Zoom MS-60B. Yes, its a multi-fx, but the compressor models are decent and very configurable, and there's no rule that says you can't use it like a single pedal if you want to.
That was my immediate thought too. I've got an MXR M87 on my board, but recently I've just been going out with my MS-60B and a valve preamp/DI and using the dbx 160A model on the 60B which works very well for the light compression that I want. On the downside it doesn't have any metering, but it's easy enough to set up by ear alone. And you've got 57 other effects models there if you want them.
15. I've used a Fusion F1 gig bag for the last couple of years. Very sturdy, but comfortable to wear with the backstraps. Loads of room in the pockets. Not showing any signs of giving up the ghost. http://www.fusion-bags.com/products/f1-bass-guitar-gig-bag
16. I was about to order another set of Elixir nanoweb steels to replace the set on my American Deluxe Precision. I've got Elixirs on my TRB 1005 and L2000 as well, but I'd be very interested in giving these a go - a set of 45-100s. The other strings I am currently using are DR LoRiders (both steel and nickel sets) and DR Sunbeams so I would be able offer comparisons between these and the NYXLs as well.
17. Listening to it now for the 4th time. He's still got it. Can't believe that it's 43 years since I bought my first Bowie album (Aladdin Sane).
18. From 1981 to 1989 I was playing a 1979 Stingray through an Ampeg SVT and an Ampeg 2x15 cab. That was a fairly epic set up, but I had to flog it all to deal with a financial emergency😢 Sounded great, but I can't say I missed lugging it around. The MM was the heaviest bass I've ever owned too.
19. Yes, I don't see why that shouldn't work.
20. Fantastic! Thanks very much for posting that. A mate lent me his copy of After Bathing At Baxter's when I was 15 and I was blown away by it, not least by Casady's playing. I've got all the albums up to Volunteers and they still sound as vital and exciting to my ears.
21. I wouldn't say that any of the bands I play with play at excessive volume, but for the last 5 years I've always worn earplugs if I'm playing with a drummer i.e. standing right next to sources of high frequency transients such as cymbals and a snare. I haven't experienced any of the problems cited by the OP. If I think someone's too loud, I'll ask them to turn down rather than cranking my own level.
