1. Hi Deerhunter and welcome! My understanding is that yes, you'd be better off with heavier gauge strings for drop tunings and possibly also hex core strings rather round core as these will tend to be less compliant (i.e. feel stiffer). I'm sure someone will be along soon who uses drop tunings a lot more than I do and has more detailed advice to offer.
  2. I'd like to put in a shout for Minstrel in the Gallery... Thanks.
  3. If I hadn't just bought an M87 I'd be very tempted. Truth be told, I'm STILL tempted Here's a very positive review: http://www.ovnilab.com/reviews/duncan.shtml
  4. Here's the message I was emailed: "We've spoken to the owners of The Cherry Tree, They wish to convey that they are not stopping live music permanently. They just wish to address the issues at hand and need time to secure the noise levels and legalities of the abatement notice, They also said they know the pub is enjoyed by many and they wish this to continue but at a more controlled level by refurbishing the pub and taking steps to ensure they abide by the rules. So in short folks - The Cherry Tree is taking a break while they get things in order."
  5. Done. We've got a venue in Brighton facing a similar threat. And another one in the town closed down 3 years ago following a complaint from one person. Hope you win this one.
  6.
I'd put the envelope filter before the compressor since it works off the dynamics of the note played. I'd have the tuner first in the chain.
Same reason I put my compressor post envelope - envelope responds to amplitude changes in bass output, compressor smooths peaks from envelope. But ultimately this :
as long as it sounds good to you keep it where you feel it works best!
7. Mmm - very nice. I was tempted by one of these when I was looking for a Tele last year. Don't think you can go far wrong with CVs in any shape or form.
  8.
That looks like a whole lot of fun!
It sure is!
  9. So, a couple of arrivals, a couple of departures, a bit of rejigging and now I've got it how I want it (for the time being )
  10.
This should keep you busy for a while: http://www.acc.umu.s...Real%20Book.pdf
Great link - thanks very much!
  11.
will you be at south east bass bash at all? i have a J with hammers - would be interesting to compare the three
Sounds like a great idea. When and where is this happening?
  12.
Love my thumper, was playing it last night-what a sound. Marvelous
I've got 64s and 84s in my 2 J basses (fretless and fretted, respectively). Was playing them yesterday and reminding myself again just how great these pickups are - particularly the 84s. I was always tempted to stick a Thumper in my P bass, but went with a 62 RI instead. Very tempted to pick one up when this pickup phoenix eventually rises...
  13. I was very tempted by a MB Compressore that was for sale here but dithered a bit too long. Ended up buying the MXR M87 and am very pleased with it. Does exactly what I wanted a compressor to do - all the positive remarks above chime with my experience of this pedal. I'd still really like to try out the Compressore though 😊
  14. Have a bump on me. This is what I use. Built like a tank, fast, accurate, easy to read, good buffer. If you need a floor tuner look no further...
  15.
I guess most musicians own one, two or three guitars but a couple of dozen t-shirts.
My guitar to T shirt ratio is 4.5:1
  16.
Here's a montage I made up some time back of me and various guitars and basses through the years.
That's brilliant!
I had forgotten, you wanted pics. here's most of my 6-string heaven:
Mmm, lovely Guilds.
This is my main guitar, self built. Actually I posted a thread about making it here: http://basschat.co.u...y-ideal-guitar/
Wow - nice work.
  17. I've got a 2010 Am Dlx P and, as HowieBass suggests, because of where the frequency centre of the treble pot is set, full cut and full boost have a significantly less dramatic effect on the overall sound than the mid and bass pots. Try rolling off the bass and mid pots fully counterclockwise, play a note and sweep the treble pot through its whole range while the note's still sounding. I just tried that on my bass and you can hear a discernible difference. If that has no effect on the sound then there's obviously some kind of fault.

    Garbev

I bought Gary's Yamaha TRB 1005. Met up with him in London to collect the bass (which is in great condition and plays beautifully - thanks Gary). Had a coffee and a chat about basses and music and stuff. Altogether a very civilised affair. Great bloke.
  19. Okay, so we're all bassists, but guess what - some of us have got another couple of strings to our bow(s). I cordially detest the partisan bullshit that is particularly prevalent on a certain US bass forum, whereby all players of 6 string electric guitars are, apparently, narcissistic arseholes whose only mission in life is to piss off the saintly, impeccable bass players in their bands. I have never spent any length of time in a band where I didn't have total respect for the integrity and creativity of all the other members, which is why I never understand fellow bass players referring to their bandmates as 'guitards'. If you don't like the musicians you're playing with, you should leave and shut up. Or just shut up. Anyway - rant over - yes, it is possible to play bass and guitar and be pretty reasonable at both. So let's see your pics of you passing over to what some of our less enlightened bass brethren might see as the dark side. To kick things off, here I am rocking my G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe with Colin Newman and Robert Grey (Wire) and Malka Spigel (ex Minimal Compact) earlier this year. 20. The guitarist in my band has been banging on about the first two Chicago albums for a while and this thread jogged me to download them. For someone whose previous experience of the band was the the rather winsome ballad If You Leave Me Now when it was in the UK charts back in the 70s it's been quite a revelation!
  21. Apparently Mark King and Yolanda Charles were both in Broadcasting House (down in that London) last week, recording interviews (and playing a bit of bass) for a forthcoming series on Radio 4 about bass players and all things bass. I know it sounds highly unlikely, but my source is the in-house engineer who was riding the faders during said interviews. I will pump him for more information next week and keep you posted...
  22. Good score. AND you get to keep your bass as well. Result!
  23.
Now that looks like a lot of guitar for the money!
It certainly is. I already have a Tribute L2000 so I was confident about the build quality and the hardware and I wasn't disappointed. The carved top is just the icing on the cake!
