1. Bought some P bass pickups off Gary. Fantastically straightforward deal. Pickups arrived very swiftly, well packaged and were just what I was after. Great bloke to deal with - highly recommended.
2.
. His style can become somewhat wearing after the first 20 minutes of soloing.
3. My advice would be to check how much relief you've got in your neck. I adjusted the truss rod on my fretless so that the neck is pretty much straight - plays beautifully and sounds great.
4. Very nicely put, Fionn. I agree this is a great place to hang out thanks to the quality of the people who contribute to it. Thanks everyone. Now where's that peace 'n' love emoticon.... :-D
5. Maybe not the heaviest thing ever (whatever that may be) but what happens from around 3.30 onwards in this song certainly made me sit up and pay attention when I first heard it. And when I heard it again just now. This registers pretty high on my heaviosity meter - it just sounds...er..heavy.
6. Many thanks for that redstriper - looking forward to hearing those. I like the new album - very different and not as immediate as Dig Lazarus Dig (which I thought was one of their best) - but definitely growing in me. Looking forward to seeing them in October.
7.
Glad to see that Glen has lost the goat beard.
Thank God for that - that beard turned last year's otherwise excellent Squeeze documentary into a far more disturbing affair than it should have been.
Some people see the versatility as a strength. For me it's a weakness, as if they can't really make up their minds what they want to do.
MAJOR DERAIL ALERT This sums up exactly how I feel about Queen. Sheer Heart Attack is a great album. The End. The rest is a genre-hopping PITA - never understood why they became so globally feted. Okay, I'm off to the bunker now.
8. Must confess that I hadn't encountered that particular urban myth before - how peculiar!
9.
^this guy is feeling lucky then.
10. If anyone's interested, Kyle Eastwood has just announced some UK dates. What do we reckon - credible musician in his own right, or still trading on the family name? I thought this was decent enough, although it's a shame that the pianist seems to be having so much trouble finding the set of keys he's dropped inside the piano
11. Thanks for the heads up - duly booked
12.

If that had four strings I'd be all over it
13. John Giblin is certainly worth checking out - one of my favourite fretless players. He's recorded with loads of people including Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, Scott Walker, John Martyn and many more.
14. I use this:
15. That's a lovely looking bass and I bet it sounds great too. Congratulations - I'm sure you'll be very happy together!
16. Just been sorting out a line for Blue Christmas for a gig tomorrow night. Also just learnt the line to Rio for the fun of it (inspired by another thread that you may have read). And the notation for all of James Jamerson and Bob Babbitt's lines from What's Going On is siiting on my music stand - so far I've worked through the title track, Right On and Mercy Mercy Me.
17. Thanks for all the advice - I've passed it on. The bass is only a couple of months old so he's taking it back to the shop tomorrow.
18.
Armchair diagnosis must be a fault in the wiring, if your friend is near Bexhill I'd be happy to have a look at it. Cheerz, John
Yeah - I suggested he gets his soldering iron out and gives the guts a once over. He's in Sevenoaks but ta very much for the offer.
Has he tried another amp? Not too much to go bad on a vmj?
Aha - hadn't thought of that (doh!). Certainly worth checking. Cheers.
19. A friend of mine recently bought a VM Jazz for his son. He just posted on Facebook with the following problem: Bass playing friends! A question: what makes a passive bass have really low output? Both pickups and tone wound fully up. Played okay for about 5 seconds, then faded away to hardly anything. Bad capacitor? Faulty connection inside? He's tried it with different leads, but it doesn't make any difference. What do you reckon - dodgy jack socket connection? I would have thought that would cause intermittent cutting out of the signal rather than attenuation. Any suggestions welcome.
20. It's worth having a search using the box at the top of the page - you'll find plenty of threads which may give you some options to consider. You'll find that Wizard pickups get a lot of recommendations - they're good quality and good value - a Thumper in the P position and an 84 at the bridge would certainly give you plenty of punch. But don't forget that changing the kind of strings you use and adjusting the height of your current pickups can also have a significant effect on your sound and costs less than buying new pickups. Finally it's worth asking yourself whether the money is best spent upgrading your current bass or being put towards another bass with better specs - plenty of bargains to be picked up on the For Sale forum/classifieds here.
21. Depends entirely on what you think is lacking in the current sound and what sort of sound you'd like from your replacement pickups.
22. I don't own one either, but I dropped in to see Bernie about a repair a couple of weeks ago. Made the terrible mistake of playing one of his Rumours - now trying to figure out how to fund one of my own! Stunningly good basses.

CURVED AIR
Mate of mine had the picture disc, was damn near unplayable, he always envied me my normal vinyl one.
Yup - looked pretty enough spinning round, but sonically it was a distorted crackle fest. Good album though.
