1. I just completed this mod on my L2000, having found a couple of very useful diagrams online. I replaced the on-on parallel/series switch with an on-on-on 4PDT switch, to give me parallel/single (inner) coils/series. A bit fiddly, but actually a very straightforward job. I now have 27 tonal variations available before I even touch the bass and treble pots! I particularly like the sound of both inner coils together - the mids are more pronounced than when both humbuckers are selected in either series or parallel. Altogether a very worthwhile mod which makes this bass even more versatile than it was. If anyone's thinking of doing it I'm very happy to provide any information which might prove useful.
2. This looks rather tasty and it sounds as if the seller has a reasonable BIN price in mind.... EMGs rather than Bernie's own p/ups though and obviously not the same pre-amp that he puts in his basses now. Still tempted. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GB-GOODFELLOW-Standard-Spitfire-bass-Prototype-N-001-/221361235593?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item338a286689 (Must not succumb to temptation. Must not succumb to temptation.)
3. In October 2013 I got the other three members of a band I was in back in the 80s together for a one-off gig in Berlin. We'd last played live together in 1989. Everything slid back into place surprisingly easily, considering we hadn't played these songs for nearly 25 years - one rehearsal 3 weeks before the gig and then another on the day. Hugely enjoyable.
4. I wish you many happy years together :-)
5. Dammit! Even more regretful that I missed you when you were last in Brighton. Very good indeed - must catch you next time.
6.
Has anyone tried a T-Bird with flats?
My 2005 Tbird had flats on it (possibly Fenders?) when I bought it secondhand. I like flats (I've got LaBellas on my J and Chromes on my P/J), but I found that on the Tbird the voicing of the p/ups was already so dark that with flats it all got a bit muddy, so I swapped them for DR Sunbeams which worked a whole lot better IMO.
7. No noise issues with my 2010 American Deluxe P either. I use it passive a lot of the time, but it's quiet with the pre-amp on too. Gets more play than any of my other basses - really well put together and very comfortable to play. I did swap out the pickups earlier this year because I was after a more vintage P sound and a bit more bottom end from the J p/up, but the stock p/ups are good. Be interested to see what you think when you get the chance to play one.
8. No, you're right. There's still a 5 string Deluxe Jazz in the post 2009 series, but not a 5 string Precision.
9. I've got 2 x Circle, Block 3 tickets for Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds at Hammersmith Apollo tonight (Sunday 27th October) and I'm not able to go. Don't want them to go to waste. Face value is £37.50 each, but you can have them for nothing. BUT - you'll need to pick them up from me in BRIGHTON. PM me if you're interested. First come, first served.
10. Well it does seem to be comically overpriced for a bitsa bass. But maybe you're paying for the bold and revolutionary placement of the J pickups ;-)
11. +1 for the Ultrajazz in a PJ set-up. Very happy with how mine sounds matched with 62 RI P p/ups. Sounds good on its own too.
12. Got into them when a mate played Focus III to me back in 1974. Still think it's a terrific album. Quite tempted to go and see them in London, but I also can't help thinking that I'd be taken aback by the Akkerman lack
13. I put Fender 62 RI P p/ups and a Dimarzio Ultra Jazz in my PJ earlier in the year and I'm very pleased with how they work both independently and combined.
14. Yep - Attack of the Grey Lantern still stands up as a really inspired collection of songs - catchy melodies, great arrangements and some fantastic guitar playing. Six never really did it for me, but thanks to this thread I'll go back and listen to it again and see if time has altered my opinion.
15.
I know quite a lot of people who were there that say Utopia kicked Zeppelins arse that day.
Yep - I agree with all those people and steve-bbb Saw him again at Hammersmith about 4 years ago when he was performing the whole of A Wizard A True Star, with some pretty far out costume changes. And he provided the support act - Todd Rundgren's Johnson. High octane covers of Robert Johnson songs - presumably just as an excuse for him to use that band name ;-)

17.
NIge when you were probably in short trousers i had the immense pleasure of seeing Todd Rundgren Kasim Sultan Roger Powell and John Wilcox at a very big live gig supporting a mahoosive band They were imho better than the main act
Knebworth 1979?
18.
Folk-wise I think they are [s]Bluegr[/s]ass.
FIxed
19. Don't know how much use this will be, but in terms of getting a balanced P/J set of pickups, when I decided that I wanted to swap out the stock pickups in my American Deluxe Precision I dropped in Fender 62 RI P p/ups and a DiMarzio Ultra Jazz bridge p/up. They work really well together - very well balanced - and there are no noise issues at all. Hope that helps. As far as Wizard pickups go, I have 84s and 64s in my two J basses. - they're great, and also really good value.
20.
I used to play my lined fretless for a few songs, so at gigs I used to tune the bass slightly higher. This meant if I placed my fingers in the same position as when playing a fretted bass, ie, behind the "fret" I wasn't playing flat. I found it saved having to adjust from one way of thinking to another.
Cool if it works for you, but on the downside it rules out using open strings and harmonics.
21.
Players of note: Mark Egan, Mick Karn, Tony Franklin, Pino Palladino (Gary Numan/Paul Young), Jaco Pastorius
and John Giblin
22.
DV247 have been consistently useless when I've tried them
I bought 2 basses from them in 2010. One Fender, one Squier - both bought unseen, both good 'uns. No complaints about their service at all. Evidently others haven't had such a positive experience, but I thought I'd offer this by way of balance.
23.
Wedgees are brilliant aren't they?!
I'd never come across these. I generally don't wear my specs simply because of the sliding-down-sweaty-nose issue, so these look ideal - thanks! The question is will they stop the other problem of my glasses flying off and hitting the drummer when I fling my head back in moments of wild enthusiasm?
